US Urges UN To Lift Sanctions On Syrian Leader Ahead Of Washington Visit

The United States has put forth a draft resolution within the U.N. Security Council meant to end sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, leader of the Islamist militant and political group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).

The proposal comes ahead of al-Sharaa’s anticipated meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House, set for next Monday.

The Security Council has regularly approved travel exemptions for al-Sharaa this year, meaning the White House meeting does not hinge on the outcome of the U.S. proposal.

The draft resolution, seen by Reuters on Tuesday, also advocates for the repeal of sanctions against Syria’s Interior Minister Anas Khattab.

The U.N. sanctions include a travel ban, asset freeze, and arms embargo.

It is unclear when a vote on the draft could be held. At least nine of the 15 council constituents need to vote in favor of the proposal for it to be enacted. However, Russia, China, the United States, France, and the UK each hold a veto.

Washington has for many months urged the Security Council to cease the sanctions on the regime in Syria.

President Bashar al-Assad was deposed in December 2024 after HTS-led militants effectively won a 13-year civil war in the country.

The country has languished since May 2014 on the U.N. Security Council’s sanctions list aimed at al-Qaeda and ISIS affiliates.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced al-Sharaa’s visit to the White House at a press briefing on Tuesday.

“When the president was in the Middle East, he made the historic decision to lift sanctions on Syria to give them a real chance at peace, and I think the administration, we’ve seen good progress on that front under their new leadership,” Leavitt said.

In July this year, Trump rescinded unilateral U.S. sanctions on Syria via executive order, saying it was “a chance at greatness” for the Syrian people, but he kept sanctions on Assad and other leaders.

Russia should prepare for full-scale nuclear tests – defense minister

Russia must prepare for full-scale nuclear tests in response to US plans to restart its own program, Defense Minister Andrey Belousov has said.

Belousov told Russian President Vladimir Putin at a cabinet meeting on Wednesday that Moscow “must respond to Washington’s steps to ensure the security of Russia. It is expedient to start preparing for full-scale nuclear tests immediately.”

Putin responded by reiterating that Russia has long said it would adhere to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, provided other members do not violate the deal.

“If the US or other states party to the relevant treaty conduct such tests, then Russia will also be required to take appropriate retaliatory measures,” the president said.

The UK is doomed under Labour, the boss of Ryanair has warned as he claimed wealthy people were scrambling to ‘get the hell out of London’ before being hit by a Budget tax raid.

Michael O’Leary said he had no faith in the Chancellor’s ability to restore growth and branded her tax policies ‘dumb’.

The comments came amid reports that Rachel Reeves is planning to target the wealthy with a mansion tax in the Budget later this month.

He told the Guardian: ‘The UK economy under the current leadership is doomed.

Mr O'Leary has also taken umbrage at Labour’s decision to hike air passenger duty – a tax on flights – and said further increases in the Budget would prompt the carrier to shift capacity to other countries with lower tax burdens such as Sweden or Italy.

He told Bloomberg: ‘She hasn’t a rashers how to deliver growth. She puts up employment taxes, puts up APD.’

Mr O’Leary said Ryanair had written to the Treasury describing the increase in the air tax as ‘the dumbest idea even you lot have come up with’.

He said that a further increase at the Budget would mean 10 per cent of Ryanair’s capacity, or about five million seats, is moved to lower tax countries.

‘Eventually even a dumb Labour government will work out that for an island on the periphery of Europe, the way to grow – and the way to increase tax revenue – is to get tourists onto the island first and then tax them,' he added.

‘The way to grow is not by increasing entry taxes, which is what APD is.’

Kids’ Online Safety Laws Could Dig a Graveyard for Speech and Privacy

While a slew of legislation purports to be protecting the presence of children online, the incentives and provisions threaten to upend protections on fundamental rights

For many people, restrictions on the freedom to share their opinions online and listen to their favorite podcasts without government permission may seem like something out of a dystopian novel or horror movie. Increasingly, however, lawmakers in countries with time-honored traditions of respecting free speech have worked to pass legislation, though well-intentioned, aimed at protecting young people online by restricting a wider array of content without first uploading a government-issued ID.

It’s a scary story for our speech and privacy rights that is becoming increasingly and concerningly true.

Earlier this year, the United Kingdom’s Online Safety Act went into effect. The law places stringent requirements on websites and apps that might contain information deemed “harmful to minors.” In the immediate aftermath of the law’s enforcement date, some major websites blocked access for non-age-verified users to content on the wars in Gaza and Ukraine to ensure compliance with the law. They did so under the (presumable) reasoning that, even though such content might be protected by the law’s exceptions for news, it still posed too much of a risk of being found in violation of the law’s vague terms and categories. Though done out of an abundance of caution, this action leaves many users bereft of important news and critical discourse on these topics.

When policymakers claim existing exceptions in the Online Safety law should render websites’ cautious content takedowns unnecessary or overzealous, the reality is that websites have little incentive not to err on the side of caution rather than carry speech that could possibly be seen by anyone as objectionable. Laws such as the Online Safety Act could also more generally chill speech on a variety of important topics, well beyond any newsworthiness exceptions for discourse around world events, including conversations about treatment for drug addiction or information about sexual and reproductive health.

Democratic State Rep. Kaohly Vang Her emerged victorious late Tuesday night in the St. Paul mayoral election, defeating incumbent Democratic Mayor Melvin Carter after a tabulation of second-choice votes, according to election results. Her, who was born in Laos and entered the U.S. as a refugee, once claimed during a public debate that she and her family were illegal migrants, but later walked those claims back.

“I am illegal in this country. My parents are illegal here in this country,” Her said in June during a Minnesota House of Representatives floor debate over Medicaid eligibility for illegal migrants.

“I tell you this story because I want you to think about who it is that you are calling illegal,” Her continued. “My family was just smarter in how we illegally came here.”

Later that day, the state representative told the Minnesota Reformer, a local news outlet, that she and her parents were actually American citizens, but made the stunning claim in an attempt to inspire empathy from her GOP colleagues. However, Her maintained that her father technically broke the law when filling out refugee paperwork for her family.

“Technically, you would say my father broke the law, right? But we would have come anyway,” Her said to the Minnesota Reformer at the time.

Her will begin leading St. Paul, a city of more than 300,000 people, in January 2026, becoming the first woman and first member of the Hmong community to do so, according to MPR News. A member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, she previously served in Carter’s office before challenging him for his seat.

In nearby Minneapolis, Mayor Jacob Frey is still fighting off a challenge from Minnesota State Senator Omar Fateh. While Frey accumulated the most first-choice votes Tuesday night, he fell short of the majority needed to win in the first round, pushing the election into a count of the second and third-choice votes, according to Fox 9.

Central Bank Gold Buying Hit Highest Level of the Year in September

Central bank gold buying hit the highest level of the year in September, with several new banks adding to their reserves.

Globally, central banks officially added a net 39 tonnes of gold to their holdings in September. That was up 79 percent month-on-month and was above the 12-month average of 27 tonnes.

A strong September drove official third-quarter central bank gold purchases to a net 220 tonnes. That was up 28 percent from Q2 and 6 percent above the five-year third quarter average.

The World Council said the pickup in central bank gold demand in Q3, despite record prices, “is evidence that central banks continue to add gold strategically, despite facing higher prices.”

So far in 2025, central banks have gobbled up 634 tonnes of gold based on official data. This is below the level through the same period over the last three years, but above the pre-2022 average of 400 to 500 tonnes.

Brazil was the biggest buyer in September, adding 15 tonnes of gold to its reserves. It was the first reported increase in Brazil’s gold holdings since 2021. The Brazilian central bank now officially holds 145 tonnes of gold.

The National Bank of Kazakhstan continued adding gold to its holdings with an 8-tonne purchase. It was the seventh straight month of increasing Kazakh gold reserves. Kazakhstan was the biggest buyer in Q3, increasing its gold stockpile by 18 tonnes to 324 tonnes.

The Bank of Guatemala was another new player in the market, adding 6 tonnes of gold to its reserves in September. That pushed the country’s gold holdings to 13 tonnes, representing a 91 percent increase.

The Central Bank of Turkey increased its holdings by 2 tonnes in September. The Turkish central bank has been a net purchaser for 28 consecutive months – since June 2023.

The Czech Central Bank has followed a similar strategy – growing its gold reserves at a slow, steady pace. It added another 2 tonnes in September, its 31st straight month of gold accumulation. The Czech Republic now holds 67 tonnes of gold. Czech officials say they plan to increase gold reserves to 100 tonnes by 2028.

China has reported an increase in its official reserves for 11 straight months, adding an additional tonne in September. The People’s Bank of China has increased its official holding by 399 tonnes in that span.

Total official Chinese gold reserves are now over 2,300 tonnes, making up around 7 percent of its total reserves.

A CNN exit poll found that 33 percent of Jewish voters supported far-left Democrat Zohran Mamdani in Tuesday’s New York City mayoral election, while 63% voted for independent candidate Andrew Cuomo and 3% backed Republican Curtis Sliwa.

CA Teachers Forced into LGBTQ “Loyalty Test” that Labels Christian Beliefs as Bigotry

In accordance with a recently passed law in 2023, the California school system is now requiring all 7th–12th-grade teachers and certificated school employees to undergo annual LGBTQ “cultural competency” training and testing. Developed by activist organizations, the training labels those with traditional Christian beliefs about sexuality and biological sex as “homophobic” or “transphobic.” It instructs employees to protect students’ “privacy” from their own parents and to use so-called “preferred pronouns” such as they/them or ze/zem. The training concludes with a test to ensure school employees repeat the state-approved beliefs about sexual orientation and gender ideology.

An alarmed former elementary school principal, Brett Loring, and current Director of Student Services at a TK–8 district in Northern California, is one of several concerned Christian educators who have reached out to the California Family Council. “It’s not training; it’s programming,” Loring said. “It’s telling teachers what to think and how to respond to students, no matter what their own beliefs or the parents’ beliefs are.”

The curriculum, mandated by the California Safe and Supportive Schools Act, AB 5 and AB 130, was funded with $2.4 million in taxpayer dollars. These funds support online courses designed by LGBTQ advocacy groups in partnership with the California Department of Education and the Los Angeles County Office of Education. Organizations such as the ACLU, Equality California, the Trevor Project, OUT for Safe Schools, the California Teachers Association, and the California State PTA helped craft the training outline—called PRISM—but school board members and parents have struggled to access the full material.

CFC has spoken with several school board members who have been denied access to PRISM training in their districts. One Southern California school board member was even told by his superintendent that the Department of Education will not allow school board members to view the material.

Recently, however, CFC obtained a recording of a teacher taking the LGBTQ “cultural competency” training and final exam as promoted by AB 5 and PRISM. While the PRISM website allows districts to create their own “substantially similar” version of the course, the content must still meet the same ideological standards. (read the ED code for details) Yet since the PRISM online training is free to school districts, it is assumed most school boards will opt for the no-cost version.

“The Houthis look like some minor annoyance. From time to time they fire a ballistic missile at us; we intercept those missiles. It looks like a small thing. It is not a small thing,” he said.

He also described the group, which is allied to Iran, as “fanatical in the most extreme sense you can imagine,” arguing it has the capability to produce ballistic missiles and other weapons and is committed to what he called “the program to annihilate Israel.”

In addition, Netanyahu stressed the threat from Yemen was tangible, not theoretical, and warned it could develop further over time.

“It is, of course, coordinated with Iran, and we will do whatever is necessary to remove this threat as well,” he said. “We will, to say the least, deny it the ability to do so.”

The Houthis engaged in a heated confrontation with Israel following the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip. The group attacked ships linked to Israel and launching dozens of missiles and drones at targets in the country. Israel responded by launching multiple waves of strikes against Yemen, killing the Houthis prime minister and mortally wounding the group’s chief of staff last August.

Neither side has engaged the other since a peace plan overseen by the U.S. was put into motion in Gaza last month, in what appears to be a de-facto ceasefire.

However, many observers warned that the end of the war in the Strip will enable Israel to escalate on other fronts like Yemen, Lebanon, Iraq and Iran. The Houthis appear to be well aware of that.

Speaking on November 4, Abdel-Malik al-Houthi, the leader of the group, ordered his forces to prepare for an inevitable confrontation with Israel.

“We are inevitably heading towards more confrontation with the Israeli enemy,” Houthi declared in a televised address, adding that the region will never see peace while Israel occupies Palestine.
