Swedish Crown Jewels stolen in daring speedboat heist
Two thieves have snatched priceless items from the Crown Jewels of Sweden from a cathedral display before escaping in a speedboat docked nearby.
The crowns of King Charles IX and Queen Christina, as well as a royal orb, were taken from Strangnas Cathedral yesterday afternoon.
The two men dashed to a boat docked nearby.
"One of my friends saw two people running," a witness told Royal Central.
"I saw the boat just there, a white little boat, with a motor on the back."
Police pursued the thieves by land, air and sea, sending out helicopters, boats and cars to track down the pair.
But they were unable to catch them.
"It's 1-0 to them right now," police spokesman Thomas Agnevik said.
Strangnas is a small town south of Stockholm.
The cathedral dates back to the 12th century.
The crown jewels of Charles IX and his wife Christina were buried with them upon their deaths in 1611 and 1625 respectively.
But they were exhumed later and their crowns were put on display.
