Fireball spotted in sky near NASA's Kennedy Space Center as SpaceX attempts rocket launch

Nov. 8, 2025, 10:26 a.m. ET

For people who live on the Space Coast of Florida, it's not uncommon to see a rocket launch in the sky.

But a possible fireball or wayward object? That's not as common.

Coincidentally, on Saturday, Nov. 8, during a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launch attempt from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, something was spotted in the sky. Social media users posted photos and video online.

Just before 6:20 a.m., FLORIDA TODAY Executive Editor Mara Bellaby spotted a possible satellite breaking apart and streaking across the sky while she was out for a morning jog on Merritt Island.

Merritt Island is part of Brevard County, an hour east of the Orlando theme parks.

Bellaby recently wrote about rising launch rates in her Week in Review column for FLORIDA TODAY.

Spaceflight Now posted video of the phenomenon: "While waiting for the Starlink 10-51 launch our cameras at the Kennedy Space Center captured what appears to be a satellite reentry in the dawn sky. (camera emoji) @johnpisaniphoto"

Chatter in the post noted the possible satellite reentry was "streaking from north to south about 6:18 a.m. ET" and it was "bright and chunky."

One post on social media site X, which is owned by billionaire SpaceX founder Elon Musk, suggested the fireball was "almost certainly reentry of a Chinese upper stage rocket," according to user @jconcilus, whose bio states he is a marine traffic operator and NASA Spaceflight (NSF) camera custodian.

Fireball spotted over Merritt Island, Florida, on Saturday, Nov. 8, was not a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket

The fireball sighting over Merritt Island, Florida, which is nearby Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, was not a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

SpaceX had attempted to launch the rocket for another Starlink mission, with the launch window between 3:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. ET Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025. SpaceX announced a scrub at about 7:14 a.m.

The space agency will try again for Sunday, Nov. 9, though no time was given as of 9:45 a.m. Saturday.

This week alone has seen a few rocket launch attempts, scrubs and launches − including a nighttime liftoff of a SpaceX Falcon 9 on Nov. 5, 2025, from Cape Canaveral.

China builds advanced satellite power system for particle beam and other space weapons

Updated: 6:33pm, 8 Nov 2025

Particle beams – streams of atoms or subatomic particles accelerated to nearly the speed of light – have been the holy grail of space warfare.

The idea is simple: fire a tightly focused beam of high-energy particles at an enemy satellite or missile, damaging it through sheer kinetic and thermal energy.

FCC Pushes Satellite Modernization as Carr Warns of ‘Space Race 2.0’

Nov 7, 2025

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr said the United States has entered a “Space Race 2.0,” and touted his efforts to accelerate space licensing and expand access to spectrum, in a speech at Federalist Society’s National Lawyers’ Conference here on Friday

Carr said the Federal Communications Commission's Space Bureau, created under his predecessor, former agency Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel, had accelerated licensing and expanded access to spectrum as part of his broader “Build America” infrastructure agenda linking broadband, wireless, and orbital networks.

“We’re working to make the U.S. the friendliest regulatory environment in the world for innovators to launch, grow, and scale space operations,” Carr said.

Carr described the U.S.’s new competitive phase with both China and the European Union, and said all three nations were seeking to set global technical standards.

The FCC had opened more than 20 gigahertz of spectrum for satellite services, simplified legacy sharing rules, and advanced proposals to strengthen GPS reliability.

“Every day matters,” Carr said, adding that delays in permitting and outdated rules could hand ground to Beijing’s state-backed networks.

How U.S. telecom and space regulations balance speed with security

Carr’s keynote speech framed a broader discussion about how U.S. telecom and space regulation can balance speed with security as more private capital enters orbital broadband and 6G infrastructure markets.

The panel, moderated by Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Sarah Campbell, brought together officials and industry leaders from the White House, FCC, Amazon’s Project Kuiper, and Lockheed Martin.

Jay Schwarz, chief of the FCC’s Space Bureau, said the agency’s new “licensing assembly line” would replace one-off satellite reviews with standardized, faster approvals.

“We’re shifting from bespoke licensing to predictable, rules-based processing,” he said, adding that the goal is to remove the “paperwork, processes, and precautions that slow innovation down.”

Michael Carlson, senior corporate counsel for Amazon, said industry success would depend on how quickly federal coordination catches up to these reforms.

Faster interagency reviews and clearer spectrum sharing between commercial and government users are critical to ensuring new satellite networks launch on time, Carlson said.

Aligning licensing timelines with manufacturing and launch schedules could help avoid costly bottlenecks as the next generation of constellations moves toward deployment, he said.

'No pipeline' for commercial use under Biden

Ryan Baasch, special assistant to the President for economic policy, said the administration rebuilt a spectrum strategy after inheriting from the Biden administration what he characterized as “no pipeline” for commercial use.

Baasch said the administration had, through an executive order, directed federal agencies to speed environmental approvals for launch and broadband projects.

And it had stepped up its presence in international forums like the International Telecommunication Union, a UN agency, to ensure global spectrum standards reflect U.S. interests.

Panelists agreed that the international regulatory landscape now rivals launch capability as a test of U.S. leadership.

They pointed to the upcoming 2027 World Radiocommunication Conference, where governments will debate modernizing Equivalent Power Flux Density (EPFD) limits, which set the technical standards for how satellite systems share frequencies and prevent harmful interference.

Jennifer Warren, vice president for global regulatory affairs at Lockheed Martin, said predictable and long-term regulatory frameworks would be critical as commercial missions extend to lunar and deep-space operations.

“We need longevity in spectrum allocations if we’re going to build sustainable systems,” she said. Coordination between defense, civil, and commercial users of the spectrum will be essential to avoid interference and ensure reliable communications for future space infrastructure, Warren added.

China’s Area 51, where Xi hides stealth secrets from prying eyes

Friday November 07 2025, 9.25am GMT

In a scorched and sand-blasted salt lake on the fringes of the Gobi desert, barely a month seems to go by without a new building going up and more tarmac being laid. It’s a busy time to be at Lop Nur, China’s top-secret test base.

Both civilian and military observers of satellite images of the facility, however, were startled by what they saw there in August and September.

On one day of each month a stealth jet sat in the afternoon sun waiting for a flight at the base known as China’s Area 51, a base specifically chosen for its distance from prying eyes in the remotest corner of remote Xinjiang.

The delta-winged J-36, tailless and stealth-designed, and the J-XDS (also known as J-50), similarly shaped but slightly smaller, have emerged as China’s 6th generation tactical aircraft, not yet operational but preparing to compete with the best of America’s most advanced fighter jets.

If the planes that fly from the base are in direct competition and possible confrontation with the Pentagon’s finest, Lop Nur shares many similarities with Area 51, erected from a barren lakebed in the Nevada desert.

Close to where China has carried out nuclear tests, Lop Nur has what is thought to be the longest runway in the world, over three miles long.

Run by the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF), it is considered to be where China can launch the equivalent of US air force “black” (classified) test flights, often using the most advanced aircraft.

The CIA’s U-2 spy plane and the US Air Force’s first stealth fighter, the bat-winged F-117 Nighthawk, were test-flown at Area 51, for example.

In Nevada, notices near the perimeter of Area 51 warn that it is a restricted base and that guards are authorised to use “deadly force” against trespassers.

Lop Nur takes this a step further, warning that anyone trying to steal secrets “will be killed”. Like Area 51, it is prohibited to fly over Lop Nur. But both bases can be photographed by satellites.

Why, then, would the Chinese military have its latest jets out on the tarmac where they can clearly be seen?

During the Cold War in the Soviet Union, for example, any top secret aircraft would be quickly housed in shelters when the next US satellite was due to fly overhead. Today there are multiple eyes in low orbit, including many US and commercial satellites.

“Leaving these aircraft out in the open means the Chinese don’t mind them being spotted by passing satellites.

It’s a way of showing off what they’ve got, even though Lop Nur base could well be described as an Area 51,” Douglas Barrie, an aerospace specialist at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, said.

The J-36 and J-XDS are part of what the Pentagon says is China’s ambition to challenge US air power in the Indo-Pacific.

The J-36 is believed by US intelligence to have been designed to co-ordinate accompanying unmanned aircraft (drones) in a swarming attack, similar in concept to the Pentagon’s “Loyal Wingman” programme in which AI-operated drones would fly alongside American F-35 stealth fighters.

Lop Nur is just one of several remote bases where the PLAAF is developing and testing a next-generation fleet of combat fighters, bombers and attack drones.

The military parade in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square in September included an unmanned stealth fighter, the largest drone on display, although it could have been a mock-up rather than a fully-formed aircraft.

While China’s most advanced drones under development are being tested at other bases, including Malan in the Xinjiang region, and at a high-altitude testing site at Ngari in Tibet, key flight tests of the J-36 and J-XDS appear to be taking place at Lop Nur.

“But there are plenty of other things which we know they are developing but have never been seen, such as a subsonic, low observable stealth bomber.

That’s hidden away,” Barrie added. In the 1980s, the PLAAF was “a museum air force”, stuffed with old Soviet aircraft, he said.

“So they’ve covered a lot of ground since then and now have military aircraft which are broadly comparable with the US, but the one thing they don’t have is combat experience. The last war they fought was in the 1970s in Vietnam.”

China hasn’t totally caught up, however, particularly with carrier-borne aircraft. The PLAAF is developing the J-35 for its burgeoning aircraft carrier fleet.

On Friday, Beijing announced its third aircraft carrier, the Fujian, had entered service, following a ceremony attended by President Xi Jinping.

“China currently has a very old aircraft for their carriers, the J-15, which is terrible.

It’s the heaviest and lowest thrust-to-weight-ratio carrier-borne aircraft in the world,” said Eric Heginbotham, a specialist in Asian security issues at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). “The US has the stealth F-35C on carriers, so we’re well ahead of China,” he said.

“But what is concerning is China’s development of ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) drones which can be used to spot US carriers and other warships and send back co-ordinates for their huge stock of anti-ship ballistic missiles,” Heginbotham added.

“They would act as the eyes and ears for missile launches. We know the Chinese are developing these on a large scale. The US is ahead of the Chinese in terms of ISR drones, but they are very expensive.

The Global Hawk long-range drone which has just been retired cost around $120 million a copy, and the new RQ-180 ISR unmanned vehicle which is still under development is going to cost even more.”

Tutankhamun’s dagger came from outer space — Experts trace its alien origin and are stunned

November 7, 2025

For thousands of years, Egypt has served as a cornerstone for history and ancient civilization.

The country is home to many of the world’s most incredible wonders, like the towering Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx.

However, in this article, we discuss the opinions of experts on something far more mysterious than both of those: Tutankhamun’s dagger.

Researchers uncover extraterrestrial significance in Egypt

Egypt holds much relevance to man and his historical timeline. The country is home to the legendary Nile River, among other historic monuments that have shaped its culture and traditions for thousands of years.

Among these are archeological treasures with no ordinary symbols that have raised questions among experts.

The piece of particular interest belongs to a king you may have heard about. His name was King Tutankhamun, and he remains one of Egypt’s most famous kings.

The young king ruled Egypt through what historians believed were her most fragile years in history. Although his reign was brief, archaeologists have uncovered something rare in his burial site.

Researchers have uncovered a pack of objects believed to guide the young pharaoh through the afterlife. Among these objects was a dagger, named Tutankhamun’s dagger, with an extraordinary symbol.

This blade represented status and strength. However, researchers were extremely shocked when they found it because it had no rust and it glossed with an unusual finish.

Scientific explanation behind the mystery of Tutankhamun’s dagger

A team of researchers was led by Takafumi Matsui, Director of the Planetary Exploration Research Center at the Chiba Institute of Technology in Japan.

The explanation the team discovered was far beyond the technology at the time. Tutankhamun’s dagger appeared to have been forged from meteoritic iron.

To further explain this, they examined the artifact using X-ray fluorescence and structural mapping techniques. These techniques were used to detect crystalline Widmanstatten patterns within the iron.

This pattern can only be found in meteorite iron, and compared with the metallurgy at the time, researchers began pointing toward space, just like this shocking discovery beneath an ancient mine.

Matsui and his team then carried out a chemical analysis of its components. What they discovered were high concentrations of nickel and cobalt.

This matched their initial suspicion. They believed the only way such material could have been achieved was through the remnant of a fallen star.

A timeless collaboration of Egypt with space

Many of the artifacts and wonders from Egypt have had rumors of spatial interference. However, this particular finding is an exception.

Researchers believe that although Egypt was in its Bronze Age, iron could only have been a celestial gift. Hence, this explains why iron was viewed as a sacred metal in ancient Egypt.

The implications of this ancient metallurgy today

For those who love archaeology, Tutankhamun’s dagger seems to extend beyond Egypt.

The use of a sophisticated metal such as meteoritic iron expands our understanding of ancient metallurgy and its relevance to civilization.

The implication suggests that Egypt most certainly revered astronomy and had access to celestial metals.

The time Tutankhamun’s dagger would have been made was centuries before the Iron Age. This hints to researchers that ancient Egypt may have a history of exchanging trades and cultures beyond its borders.

Some historians have taken to re-examining the object and its ties with gods and other magical elements explored in ancient Egypt.

Today, Tutankhamun’s dagger sits behind the glass of the Grand Egyptian Museum. But its origin and story feel more alive than ever. It gives us a glimpse into the specialized metallurgy explored in ancient civilizations.

However, it also reminds us that humans have had dealings with the cosmos as far back as anyone could research, just like this ancient tomb discovery, revealing buried treasures.

EU to establish ‘Ministry of Truth’ – Guardian

8 Nov, 2025 00:42

The European Union is planning to launch a centralized hub for monitoring and countering what it calls foreign “disinformation,” according to a leaked document seen by the Guardian.

Critics have long warned that Brussels’ initiatives amount to the institutionalization of a censorship regime.

According to the European Commission proposal, set to be published on November 12, the so-called Centre for Democratic Resilience will function as part of a broader “democracy shield” strategy, pitched by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen ahead of the 2024 European elections.

Participation in the center will be voluntary, and the Commission has welcomed “like-minded partners” outside the bloc, including the UK and countries seeking accession.

The draft accuses Russia of escalating “hybrid attacks” by disseminating false narratives, while also pointing to China as another threat – alleging that Beijing uses PR firms and social media influencers to advance its interests across Europe.

By spreading deceitful narratives, sometimes including the manipulation and falsification of historical facts, they try to erode trust in democratic systems,” the Guardian cited the document as saying, though it provided little substantial evidence.

The Commission frames the move as a defensive response to foreign meddling, citing as one example the controversial cancellation of Romania’s 2024 presidential election.

However, Telegram founder Pavel Durov noted it was the EU, namely French intelligence, that pressured him to censor conservative content during elections in Romania and Moldova, condemning the bloc for waging “a crusade” against free speech.

The new center will add to the EU’s growing network of tools to monitor and moderate information, and is expected to work alongside supposedly “independent” fact-checkers and even coordinate with online influencers to promote content aligned with Brussels’ policies.

The proposal fits neatly into the wider enforcement framework of the EU’s Digital Services Act, which mandates the removal of “harmful content” and has drawn fierce criticism from free speech advocates.

Washington, once a partner in joint “disinformation” monitoring through the now-defunct Global Engagement Center, has since distanced itself from the EU’s regulatory push.

The US State Department recently described the bloc’s initiatives as “Orwellian,” stating that “censorship is not freedom” and warning that such measures only serve to shield European leaders “from their own people.”

“If you’re running in fear of your own voters, there is nothing America can do for you,” US Vice President J.D. Vance told the Munich Security Conference in February, referring to the Romanian election.

“If your democracy can be destroyed with a few hundred thousand dollars of digital advertising from a foreign country, then it wasn’t very strong to begin with.”

NATO to deploy 800,000 troops in case of war with Russia – German general

8 Nov, 2025 16:34

Berlin is prepared for a war with Moscow and stands ready to facilitate the deployment of 800,000 NATO troops towards the Russian border, the head of the nation’s joint operations command, Lieutenant General Alexander Sollfrank, has said.

The hypothetical deployment is part of Operations Plan Germany, which was revealed last year. The 1,000-page-long document governs Berlin’s response if Article 5 of the NATO treaty is triggered in a confrontation with Moscow.

It includes turning Germany into a major logistics hub for the deployment of hundreds of thousands of soldiers and pieces of equipment from various NATO nations against Russia. The deployment must be completed within 180 days of the start of the conflict.

According to Sollfrank, the plan may be implemented sooner rather than later.

“Russia possesses a very large military potential despite the war in Ukraine,” he told an annual Bundeswehr conference in Berlin on Friday, adding that “Russia is already capable of [launching] a limited attack on the NATO territory.”

Speaking to Reuters the same day, the general claimed that Moscow could do it “as early as tomorrow.” German officials have increasingly spoken of the alleged Russian threat while taking an increasingly belligerent stance towards Moscow.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz has previously declared that diplomatic options for resolving the Ukraine conflict are “exhausted” and doubled down on providing weapons to Kiev.

On Friday, both he and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that Germany’s existence in its present form was threatened by Russia. “It is not alarmism… when I say that our way of life is in danger,” Pistorius told the military conference.

Moscow has repeatedly stated it has no intention of attacking NATO. It also dismissed Berlin’s claims as “nonsense” aimed at justifying skyrocketing military spending.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has previously warned that Germany demonstrates “clear signs of re-Nazification.”

Politico reported last month that Germany’s rearmament plans would cost it €377 billion ($440 billion).

Ukraine hits desertion record – BBC

8 Nov, 2025 15:16

More than 21,000 soldiers deserted and left Kiev’s armed forces without leave last month, BBC Ukraine reported on Friday.

This was the largest single monthly number of desertion reports in the past four years of the Ukraine conflict, the broadcaster said, citing the latest data from the Prosecutor General’s Office.

According to former Ukrainian MP Igor Lutsenko, who now serves in the military, the actual number could be even higher.

On Facebook on Friday, he wrote “21,602 in October… This is a record. This is a very bad record,” adding, “This is just official data. In reality, many AWOL or desertion cases are not registered.”

Ukrainian forces on the front lines are under “enormous strain, because a double, triple load falls on every soldier who hasn’t fled,” Lutsenko added. “We have huge holes in our defense at the front because of this.”

Kiev has ramped up its forced draft campaign in recent months to compensate for its army’s thinning ranks, as Russian forces have pushed their advance.

There have been twice as many complaints about forced conscription since early June as there were during the first five months of the year, Ukrainian parliamentary human rights commissioner Dmitry Lubinets told Ukrainskaya Pravda on Wednesday.

Emerging eyewitness videos have regularly shown Ukrainian press gangs ambushing and chasing military-age men on the streets and wrestling them into vans, often brawling with the would-be conscripts and bystanders.

The practice, now colloquially known as ‘busification,’ has sparked growing discontent across Ukraine.

Last month, Nikita Poturaev, the head of the Ukrainian parliamentary Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy, claimed that such videos were either fake or made using AI.

Earlier in October, Ukrainian conscription authorities urged citizens to stop filming and sharing videos of press gangs violently detaining prospective recruits.

Another drone targets Russian trade mission in NATO country

8 Nov, 2025 15:11

An unidentified drone has dropped a bag of red paint within the premises of the Russian trade mission in Stockholm, Moscow’s embassy in Sweden has said.

It published an image showing red paint splattered on the pavement inside the mission’s compound. Another such incident happened early on Saturday, the embassy said in a statement on Telegram.

Since May 2024, there have been more than 20 acts of vandalism using UAVs targeting the embassy and the trade mission in the Swedish capital, the statement read.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in September that Moscow had repeatedly asked the Swedish authorities to properly protect the Russian missions.

But, despite assurances that necessary measures would be taken, the drone incursions continue, she noted.

“Such provocations pose a threat not only to the diplomatic mission, but also to the city's residents.

Apparently, after Sweden joined NATO [in March 2024], it lost control over its internal and external security,” Zakharova said.

Russian diplomatic buildings have been subject to frequent acts of vandalism and harassment since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022.

Last month, a woman was detained after threatening a police officer guarding the Russian Embassy in Berlin with a knife.

In February, two pro-Ukraine activists in France were sentenced to eight months of house arrest after they threw three improvised bombs filled with liquid nitrogen at the Russian Consulate in Marseilles.

Moscow condemned the punishment as far too lenient for an “attempt to commit a terrorist act.”

Biden responsible for Ukraine conflict – Orban

8 Nov, 2025 12:03

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has accused former US President Joe Biden’s administration of driving the Ukraine conflict by pushing EU member states to adopt a more confrontational line against Russia.

Unlike most other countries in the bloc, Hungary has consistently opposed Brussels’ anti-Russian policies and has called for a more diplomatic approach to put an end to the hostilities.

It has also refused to provide weapons to Kiev and opposed EU sanctions against Moscow.

“Without the pressure coming from the US government – I’m speaking about 2022 – the Europeans would not take that hard line that they have today on the war,” Orban told reporters after a meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Friday.

He emphasized that some major EU economies “rejected to be involved more than just sending some, you know, humanitarian issues.” “That’s the fact of history,” the prime minister concluded.

Orban’s remarks were echoed by Trump, who responded that the conflict stemmed from mistakes made by his predecessor.

The president argued that “Biden actually pushed for that war to happen,” adding that he – Trump – “inherited that mess.” In August, Trump said that the Ukraine conflict could have escalated into World War III under the Biden administration.

The president has frequently argued that global tensions peaked when relations between Moscow and Washington hit their lowest point under Biden. Since returning to office in January, Trump has reestablished high level communication.

Earlier this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s economic envoy Kirill Dmitriev urged the White House to reverse the policies of the previous administration to achieve global peace. Dmitriev said that “Biden’s mistakes need to be corrected.”

Moscow has repeatedly stated that it is ready for peace talks if conditions on the ground are respected and the conflict’s root causes are addressed.

It has rejected Western calls for a ceasefire along the current line, insisting that only a lasting settlement can end the fighting.

Pakistan claims Afghanistan talks deadlocked

8 Nov, 2025 14:08

Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has claimed peace talks with Afghanistan in Istanbul aimed at preventing new border clashes have collapsed.

In an interview with GEO News, Asif said that the ceasefire would only hold if there are no attacks from Afghan territory.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesman for the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, confirmed on Saturday that the negotiations had broken down.

Islamabad and Kabul began a third round of talks in Türkiye on Thursday in a bid to ease rising tensions after last month’s deadly border clashes.

The Istanbul meeting followed the earlier five-day talks in October in Doha that produced a ceasefire.

“There is a complete deadlock. The negotiations have entered an indefinite phase,” Khawaja Asif said, adding that there is “no program for the fourth round of talks.”

The minister thanked Türkiye and Qatar for their efforts to mediate tensions between the two neighboring countries.

“They support our stance. Even the Afghan delegation agreed with us; however, they were not ready to sign a written agreement,” he said, adding that Pakistan would only accept a written accord.

“They wanted verbal assurances to be accepted, which is not possible in international negotiations,” he added.

Mujahid said negotiations had failed due to Islamabad insisting that Afghanistan assume responsibility for Pakistan’s internal security, a demand he described as beyond his nation’s “capacity.”

However, “The ceasefire that has been established has not been violated by us so far, and it will continue to be observed,” he said.

Afghan and Pakistani troops briefly exchanged fire along the border between their countries on Thursday, both nations said, on the same day peace talks to find a lasting peace restarted in Istanbul.

Each side accused the other of initiating the gunfire near Spin Boldak, a border town in southern Afghanistan along their 2,600-km (1,600-mile) frontier.

The two South Asian neighbors clashed last month, killing dozens, in the worst violence since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021.

The escalation had been attributed to border security and militant activity. Islamabad accused Kabul of sheltering Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) fighters, allegations that the Taliban administration rejects.

Ukrainian drones hit electricity substation in northern Russia, governor says

November 8, 202512:24 AM PST

Three Ukrainian drones hit an electricity substation in the northern Russian region of Vologda overnight, regional governor Georgy Filimonov said on Saturday.

Damage to the substation is being assessed, but electrical supplies in the region, which is located north of Moscow and around 1,900 km (1,180 miles) from Ukraine, are continuing uninterrupted, Filimonov said in a post on Telegram.

The Reuters Daily Briefing newsletter provides all the news you need to start your day. Sign up here.

Separately, two people were wounded when a Ukrainian drone hit a residential building in the Russian city of Saratov, local governor Roman Busargin said in a statement on Telegram.

Saratov, an industrial city on the Volga river 625 km (388 miles) from the Ukrainian border, has been repeatedly struck by Ukrainian drones since Russia ordered tens of thousands of troops into its neighbour in February 2022.

The more sparsely populated Vologda region, by contrast, has not been a regular target of Ukrainian strikes.

In total, Russia's Defence Ministry said on Saturday that it had downed 83 drones overnight, mostly over regions bordering Ukraine.

IDF slays Gaza terrorists as Trump presses int’l ‘stabilization force’

Nov. 8, 2025 / JNS)

Israeli troops in the Gaza Strip shot and killed two terrorists on Saturday in separate incidents.

In the Strip’s north, two Palestinians crossed the Yellow Line and posed a threat to soldiers, the Israeli military said.

The troops fired at the terrorists, killing one of them, according to the IDF.

In the southern Strip, a terrorist was spotted crossing the Yellow Line and approaching the troops. IDF soldiers opened fire and eliminated the threat, the army said.

The Yellow Line runs through the north, center and south of the Gaza Strip, between the area the IDF has withdrawn to according to the terms of the truce with Hamas, and the rest of the Strip.

Meanwhile on Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters in the White House that an international “stabilization force” is expected to be deployed to Gaza “very soon,” CNN reported.

“Gaza is working out very well,” he replied. Contrary to reports in the media, Trump said that the truce is “not tentative. This is a very strong peace. This is peace in the Middle East. Hamas is a very small part of it,” he continued.

“And if they don’t do as they [agreed to in the ceasefire terms], if they don’t behave, then they’ve got themselves a big problem … like they’ve never had.

But so far it seems to be working very well,” the American president said. “We have many countries involved [in the region] …, they want to see peace in the Middle East,” Trump said.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Friday that he instructed the IDF to demolish all terror tunnels in the Gaza Strip. “If there are no tunnels, there is no Hamas,” he tweeted.

On the following day, he added that Israel will continue to operate in Gaza “until the return of all fallen hostages and until the last tunnel.”

Earlier in the week, the minister said that Israel’s policy was to destroy the underground tunnels “within the Yellow Zone,” without restriction.

The ceasefire in Gaza, which took effect on Oct. 10, has for the meantime remained intact despite repeated violations by Hamas, including the killing of three IDF soldiers, and retaliatory strikes throughout the Strip by the Israeli military.

Drone strikes hit Sudan's capital hours after RSF truce announcement

World 08 November 2025

Explosions from drone strikes shook areas near Sudan’s capital Khartoum less than 24 hours after the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces announced it would join a US-backed humanitarian ceasefire.

Residents told AFP that the blasts occurred early on Friday near a military base and a power station. The capital remains under control of the Sudanese Armed Forces.

Anti-aircraft fire was also reported in Atbara, around 300 kilometres north of Khartoum. No deaths or injuries have been reported from the incidents.

Sudan’s military-led government did not confirm responsibility but reiterated its mistrust of RSF ceasefire claims.

Sudan’s civil war began in April 2023 between the army and the RSF. The conflict has killed at least 150,000 people, according to recent estimates, and displaced 12 million more.

The RSF, led by Gen Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, announced on Thursday it had accepted a humanitarian truce plan initially proposed in September by the United States, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

The plan called for a three-month pause in hostilities, followed by a permanent ceasefire and a transition to civilian governance.

The announcement came days after RSF forces seized full control of el-Fasher, a strategic city in the Darfur region. The group had surrounded the city for 18 months, blocking aid and restricting movement.

The fall of el-Fasher has triggered international condemnation. Survivors have accused RSF fighters of systematic killings, torture, and sexual violence. More than 60,000 people have fled the city, the UN refugee agency said.

The RSF admitted that “violations” had occurred and claimed to have arrested some fighters. The group released video footage it says shows a soldier being detained for participating in executions.

UN-backed monitors have confirmed famine conditions in parts of Darfur, including el-Fasher. Aid deliveries have been severely disrupted by the conflict and siege tactics.

On Tuesday, Sudan’s Defence Minister Hassan Kabroun gave a televised speech thanking the US for its efforts to broker peace but reaffirmed the military’s commitment to defeating the RSF.

“Our preparations for war are a legitimate national right,” he said.

The Sudanese ambassador to South Africa, Osman Abufatima Adam Mohammed, rejected the ceasefire proposal. He warned that previous truces were exploited by the RSF to reposition and escalate fighting.

“From our experience, we had many truces at the beginning of the war but every time there was no respect from [the RSF],” he told reporters on Friday.

Khartoum’s chargé d’affaires in Nairobi, Mohamed Osman Akasha, told the BBC that any end to the conflict must include the RSF’s disarmament and the prosecution of its leadership.

“I have no information about a proposal for truce. The only thing that I know is the government of Sudan, the people of Sudan are very determined to defeat this militia,” he said.

The Sudanese government has also opposed the involvement of the UAE in ceasefire negotiations.

Officials have repeated accusations that the Gulf nation has supplied weapons and foreign fighters to the RSF. UAE authorities deny the claim.

UN experts have assessed the allegations and deemed them credible.

The RSF’s takeover of el-Fasher has given it control of most of western Sudan. The city had served as one of the last major army-held positions in the region.

The fall has worsened the humanitarian crisis. The United Nations says more than 24 million people are facing severe food insecurity in Sudan, the highest number ever recorded in the country.

Islamic Relief warned that community-run kitchens, which have become critical lifelines for civilians, are collapsing due to lack of supplies and volunteers.

A volunteer quoted in the report said most kitchens would shut down within six months unless funding and support resumed.

Famine, disease outbreaks, and mass displacement have accelerated as international aid access remains restricted.

UN agencies have appealed repeatedly for humanitarian corridors and security guarantees, which neither side has consistently honoured.

On 14 November, the UN Human Rights Council will hold an urgent session on the situation in el-Fasher.

RSF officials have said they welcome dialogue aimed at achieving “comprehensive and lasting peace,” but they have not acknowledged responsibility for atrocities.

The group remains under scrutiny as reports of human rights violations continue to emerge from areas it controls.

Despite the announcement of a truce, the Sudanese army’s stance and the drone attacks near Khartoum suggest that no ceasefire is currently in effect.

Both parties have agreed to previous truces since the war began, none of which have lasted. The situation remains volatile with no immediate sign of a durable peace.
