54 years ago was 1971
In 1971, a series of pivotal global events reshaped politics, economics, and culture. One of the most significant was the end of the Bretton Woods system, when U.S. President Richard Nixon announced on August 15 that the dollar would no longer be convertible into gold, effectively ending the international gold standard and ushering in the era of fiat currency.
This move, known as the "Nixon Shock," was a response to economic pressures from the Vietnam War and inflation, and it led to the collapse of fixed exchange rates, with major currencies eventually allowed to float freely.
In international relations, the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 erupted, culminating in the liberation of East Pakistan and the creation of Bangladesh after a 13-day conflict that ended with the surrender of Pakistani forces in Dhaka on December 16.
India entered the war following preemptive aerial strikes by Pakistan, and the conflict marked a major shift in South Asian geopolitics.
On the cultural front, the Concert for Bangladesh was held in New York City on August 1, drawing 40,000 attendees and becoming a landmark event in music history.
In the UK, the introduction of decimal currency on February 15, known as "Decimal Day," replaced the traditional pounds, shillings, and pence system.
The year also saw the debut of the Open University, the launch of the first Boeing 747 flights by BOAC, and the rise of new fashion trends like hot pants.
In the United States, the trial of Oz Magazine for obscenity began, and the film Get Carter starring Michael Caine became a major box office success.
Meanwhile, Charles Manson and his followers were sentenced for the Tate-LaBianca murders, and the blockade against the Peopleโs Republic of China was lifted by President Nixon, paving the way for future diplomatic engagement.
Other notable events included the first One Day International cricket match played between Australia and England
, the debut of the BBC's The Two Ronnies television show
, and the first successful solo east-to-west circumnavigation by Chay Blyth, who sailed around the world in his yacht British Steel.

CAPTAGON
In the United States, the drug known as captagon is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance, meaning it has no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.
The active ingredient in captagon is fenethylline, a synthetic stimulant that is a codrug of amphetamine and theophylline.
Although fenethylline was once marketed under brand names like Captagon for conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, narcolepsy, and depression, it was removed from the market due to its addictive properties, hallucinations, and other serious side effects.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) never approved fenethylline for medical use, and it was listed as a Schedule I substance in 1981, making its manufacture, sale, and possession illegal.
Today, captagon is primarily produced illicitly in clandestine labs, mainly in Syria and other parts of the Middle East, and is trafficked globally, with the U.S. seeing increasing reports of its presence, particularly as a substitute for prescription stimulants like Adderall.
The illicit drug is often sold in pill form, but these tablets frequently contain a mixture of amphetamines, caffeine, and other adulterants, making them unpredictable and potentially dangerous.
