Moon rocks, magnified: Apollo 16 samples shine in new book 'Nanocosmos'
November 9, 2025
Prepare for a remarkable journey into magnificent magnification with "Nanocosmos: Journeys in Electron Space" (Abrams Books, 2025), a mesmerizing new science coffee table book from author, artist, documentarian and visual effects filmmaker Michael Benson. Here, size truly matters!
Inside this hypnotic 320-page hardcover, Benson takes readers into a strange miniaturized world exposed by the technological magic of scanning electron microscopes (SEM).
And here we have a pair of exclusive lunar impact glass images to share with you, taken from moon samples returned by the astronauts of NASA's Apollo 16 mission.
Marvel at these diminutive gems brought home from outer space and wrap your mind around the micro-mini scale.
Per the book's official description, "The tiny worlds here, invisible to our unassisted eyes, are if anything more intricate, complex and extraordinary than anything so far seen in deep space.
These include radiolarians, dinoflagellates and diatoms, as well as many varieties of insects, microscopic flowers and even lunar samples from the Apollo program.
The composite mosaic micrographs in 'Nanocosmos' fuse art and science in revelatory ways, exposing an astonishing sublimity hidden to the naked eye."
Lunar impact glass is formed under the high heat and pressure caused by meteoroids hitting the moon’s regolith-covered surface.
These impactors melt the disturbed lunar soil, creating molten material that instantly cools in flight to be manifested as glass shards, spherules and beads.
Benson produced "Nanocosmos" using hundreds of curated SEM scans that he captured over the course of six years at the Canadian Museum of Nature in Quebec.
These sublime images display an uncanny beauty, symmetry, and design that defies all traditional descriptions.
In addition to art exhibits, films, and scientific endeavors into the mysteries of the universe, Benson was also responsible for supervising those swirling cosmology scenes in director Terrance Malick's "The Tree of Life" (2011) and "Voyage of Time" (2016).
Additionally, he penned 2018's Hollywood history book titled "Space Odyssey" (2018), which chronicles the making of Stanley Kubrick's enigmatic sci-fi masterpiece from 1968, "2001: A Space Odyssey."

Astrophotographer captures the Elephant Trunk Nebula in breathtaking detail
November 9, 2025
Astrophotographer Terry Hancock has captured a dramatic view of the star-forming region IC 1396 — also known as the Elephant's Trunk Nebula — shining in deep space some 2,400 light-years from Earth in the constellation Cepheus.
IC 1396 is an emission nebula — a vast cloud of gas and dust that emits its own light after being ionized by ultraviolet radiation blasted out from the young stars embedded within.
The dense, dark filaments silhouetted against the glowing gas are rich with material that will give rise to future generations of stars.
The Elephant's Trunk Nebula gained its evocative nickname thanks to the 20 light-year-long column of twisting interstellar dust and gas visible near the centre of the deep-space vista.
"The image highlights various celestial elements, including a notable emission nebula, by contrast against the bluish cavity that fills the center of IC 1396," Hancock told Space.com in an email.
The entire complex spans a little over 5° of sky, or roughly 10 full moons side by side, though only the faintest hazy glow would be detectable to the naked eye under perfect dark sky conditions.
Hancock captured the ancient nebula light over the course of almost 114 hours using a 180 mm Newtonian reflector fitted with a bespoke astronomy camera from Whitewater, Colorado, on Sept. 22, 2021.
Special astronomy filters were used to isolate specific wavelengths of light, which were then carefully compiled and edited using the astrophotography software Pixinsight and Adobe Photoshop to reveal the structure and color in extraordinary detail.

Europe wants to make space food out of thin air and astronaut pee
November 9, 2025
While space agencies have their eyes set on astronaut missions to the moon, Mars and beyond, there are quite a few hurdles in the way — and one of the biggest is food.
As it stands, food is produced on Earth, then transported to the International Space Station (ISS). While that's feasible for missions in low Earth orbit, it's impractical (costly at best, and technically unfeasible at worst) for more distant destinations.
So the European Space Agency (ESA) has launched project HOBI-WAN ("Hydrogen Oxidizing Bacteria In Weightlessness As a source of Nutrition"), part of the its Terrae Novae Exploration Programme, to test a powdered protein called Solein that can be manufactured in space with very few resources.
"This project aims at developing a key resource which will allow us to improve human spaceflight's autonomy, resilience and also the well-being of our astronauts," Angelique Van Ombergen, ESA's chief exploration scientist, said in a statement.
"For human beings to be able to implement long-duration missions on the moon, or even one day to go to Mars, will require innovative and sustainable solutions to be able to survive with limited supplies."
Solein could be one such solution. It's a highly versatile powdered protein from Finnish food technology company Solar Foods that's made from microbes, air and electricity, via a gas fermentation process.
While Solar Foods has demonstrated the technology on Earth, slightly different techniques will need to be used in space. For instance, on Earth, ammonia serves as a nitrogen source for protein synthesis.
But in space, the source would be urea — an organic compound found in urine.
Over the next eight months, Solar Foods will work with prime contractor OHB System AG on the ground to develop the technology necessary to test Solein production in space. If successful, Solein production would then be tested aboard the ISS.
"The aim of the project is to confirm that our organism grows in the space environment as it does on the ground, and to develop the fundamentals of gas fermentation technology to be used in space — something that has never been done before in the history of humankind," Arttu Luukanen, senior vice president of space and defence at Solar Foods, said in a statement.
"The behavior of gases and liquids in microgravity is vastly different due to lack of buoyancy, which can drastically affect the transport of nutrients and gases for Solein microbes," Luukanen added.

Office of Space Commerce faces an uncertain future amid budget cuts and new oversight
November 9, 2025
When I imagine the future of space commerce, the first image that comes to mind is a farmer's market on the International Space Station. This doesn't exist yet, but space commerce is a growing industry.
The Space Foundation, a nonprofit organization for education and advocacy of space, estimates that the global space economy rose to US$613 billion in 2024, up nearly 8% from 2023, and 250 times larger than all business at farmer's markets in the United States.
This number includes launch vehicles, satellite hardware, and services provided by these space-based assets, such as satellite phone or internet connection.
Companies involved in spaceflight have been around since the start of the Space Age. By the 1980s, corporate space activity was gaining traction.
President Ronald Reagan saw the need for a federal agency to oversee and guide this industry and created the Office of Space Commerce, or OSC.
So, what exactly does this office do and why is it important?
As a space scientist, I am interested in how the U.S. regulates commercial activities in space. In addition, I teach a course on space policy.
In class, we talk about the OSC and its role in the wider regulatory landscape affecting commercial use of outer space.
The OSC's focus areas
The Office of Space Commerce, an office of about 50 people, exists within the Department of Commerce's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
To paraphrase its mission statement, its chief purpose is to enable a robust U.S. commercial interest in outer space.
OSC has three main focus areas. First, it is the office responsible for licensing and monitoring how private U.S. companies collect and distribute orbit-based images of Earth.
There are many companies launching satellites with special cameras to look back down at the Earth these days. Companies offer a variety of data products and services from such imagery – for instance, to improve agricultural land use.
A second primary job of OSC is space advocacy. OSC works with the other U.S. government agencies that also have jurisdiction over commercial use of outer space to make the regulatory environment easier.
This includes working with the Federal Aviation Administration on launch licensing, the Federal Communications Commission on radio wavelength usage and the Environmental Protection Agency on rules about the hazardous chemicals in rocket fuel.
This job also includes coordinating with other countries that allow companies to launch satellites, collect data in orbit and offer space-based services.
In 2024, for example, the OSC helped revise the U.S. Export Administration Regulations, one of the main documents restricting the shipping of advanced technologies out of the country.
This change removed some limitations, allowing American companies to export certain types of spacecraft to three countries: Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom.
The OSC also coordinates commercial satellites' flight paths in near-Earth space, which is its third and largest function.
The Department of Defense keeps track of thousands of objects in outer space and issues alerts when the probability of a collision gets high.
In 2018, President Donald Trump issued Space Policy Directive-3, which included tasking OSC to take this role over for nongovernment satellites – that is, those owned by companies, not NASA or the military.
The Department of Defense wants out of the job of traffic management involving privately owned satellites, and Trump's directive in 2018 started the process of handing off this task to OSC.
1/2
To prevent satellites from colliding, OSC has been developing the traffic coordination system for space, known as TraCSS.
It went into beta testing in 2024 and has some of the companies with the largest commercial constellations – such as SpaceX's Starlink – participating.
Progress on this has been slower than anticipated, though, and an audit in 2024 revealed that the plan is way behind schedule and perhaps still years away.
Elevating OSC
Deep in the text of Trump's Aug. 13, 2025, executive order called Enabling Competition in the Commercial Space Industry, there's a directive to elevate OSC to report directly to the office of the secretary of commerce.
This would make OSC equivalent to its current overseer, NOAA, with respect to importance and priority within the Department of Commerce.
It would give OSC higher stature in setting more of the rules regarding commercial use of space, and it would make space commerce more visible across the broader economy.
So, why did Trump include this line about elevating OSC in his Aug. 13 executive order?
Back in 2018, Trump issued Space Policy Directive-2 during his first term, which included a task to create the Space Policy Advancing Commerce Enterprise Administration, or SPACE.
SPACE would have been an entity reporting directly to the secretary of commerce. While it was proposed as a bill in the House of Representatives later that year, it never became law.
The Aug. 13 executive order essentially directs the Department of Commerce to make this move now. Should the secretary of commerce enact the order, it would bypass the role of Congress in promoting OSC.
The 60-day window that Trump placed in the executive order for making this change has closed, but with the government shutdown it is unclear whether the elevation of OSC might still occur.
Troubles for OSC
While all of this sounds good for promoting space as a place for commercial activity, OSC has been under stress in 2025.
In February, the Department of Government Efficiency targeted NOAA for cuts, including firing eight people from OSC. Because about half of the people working in OSC are contractors, this represented a 30% reduction of force.
In March, Trump's presidential budget request for the 2026 fiscal year proposed a cut of 85% of the $65 million annual budget of OSC. In July, space industry leaders urged Congress to restore funding to OSC.
The Aug. 13 executive order appeared to be good news for OSC. On Sept. 9, however, Bloomberg reported that the Department of Commerce requested a 40% rescission to OSC's fiscal year 2025 budget.
Rescissions are "clawbacks" of funds already approved and appropriated by Congress. The promised funding is essentially put on hold.
Once proposed by the president, rescissions have to be voted on by both chambers of Congress to be enacted. This must occur within 45 days, or before the end of the fiscal year, which was Sept. 30.
This rescission request came so close to that deadline that Congress did not act to stop it. As a result, OSC lost this funding.
The loss could mean additional cutbacks to staff and perhaps even a shrinking of its focus areas. Will OSC be elevated? Will OSC be restructured or even dismantled? The future is still uncertain for this office.

Lots of ‘mess’ to clear up in Russia-US ties – Lavrov
9 Nov, 2025 11:57
Russia sees readiness from the administration of US President Donald Trump to continue dialogue but undoing the damage done to bilateral ties under Joe Biden will take significant time, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said.
In addition to ongoing discussions on resolving the Ukraine conflict, Russia and the US held two rounds of high-level talks in Saudi Arabia and Türkiye earlier this year, dedicated to restoring the proper functioning of diplomatic missions and other forms of cooperation.
A planned third round of negotiations did not take place, with Moscow saying it was canceled by the US.
In an interview with RIA Novosti on Saturday, Lavrov said there are “many irritants in Russian-American relations, inherited from the previous US administration [of Joe Biden],” adding that “it will take a long time to clear up the mess.”
After the arrival of the Trump administration in January, Moscow “sensed willingness to resume dialogue. It is happening, but not as quickly as we would like,” the foreign minister stressed.
According to Lavrov, US-Russia discussions must not solely focus on the work of diplomatic missions, but also address the issues of the return of “illegally” seized Russian diplomatic property and the restoration of air links between the two countries.
Russia and the US drastically limited the number of each other’s diplomatic staff as relations deteriorated over the past decade.
In late 2016, the administration of outgoing US President Barack Obama restricted Russian diplomats’ access to residences in New York and Maryland, and later seized additional Russian properties.
The suspension of flights and closure of US airspace to Russian carriers were among the sanctions imposed on Moscow by the Biden administration after the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022.
"Our proposals regarding both diplomatic real estate and air travel have been conveyed to the US side. Working contacts are currently underway regarding the possibility of continuing dialogue,” Lavrov said.
Last month, Trump imposed sanctions on Russian oil giants Rosneft and Lukoil, citing lack of progress in peace talks on Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that the “unfriendly move” would not hurt Russia’s economy, but could hamper the normalization process with Washington.

NATO won’t risk war with Russia over Ukraine – former bloc chief
9 Nov, 2025 14:45
NATO will not send troops to Ukraine as it could lead to a direct clash with Russia, the bloc’s former secretary-general, Jens Stoltenberg, has said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin warned in September that Moscow would consider any unauthorized Western military personnel in Ukraine as “legitimate targets.”
The “dragging of Ukraine into NATO was one of the causes of the conflict” between Moscow and Kiev, he stressed.
In an interview with The Times on Saturday, Stoltenberg recalled that NATO members made two key decisions during a meeting in Brussels after the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022.
“One was to step up our support for Ukraine, as we did. The other was to do what we could to prevent this war from escalating beyond Ukraine and become a full-scale war between Russia and NATO,” he said.
The former NATO chief cited then-US President Joe Biden, who stated at the time that “we will not risk a third world war for Ukraine.”
According to Stoltenberg, Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky also understood that. “He called me from a bunker in Kiev… and he said: ‘I accept you are not sending in NATO ground troops, though I disagree. But please close the airspace,’” he said.
Stoltenberg said he denied the request to shut down airspace over fears of escalation, but described it as “extremely painful” to end the call that way. Later in the conflict, Zelensky continued to urge NATO to put boots on the ground.
Stoltenberg admitted that there is an “element of contradiction” when NATO says it wants Kiev to prevail but refuses to deploy its own troops to Ukraine and only focuses on arms deliveries. He added, however, that he believes this is “the right approach.”
The bloc needs to supply even more weapons to Ukraine to “make it stronger on the battlefield” so that Moscow agrees to a ceasefire along the current contact line proposed by Kiev and the West, Stoltenberg insisted.
Russia has rejected the idea of a truce, saying that Ukraine and its NATO backers will only use it to rearm and set up new defense lines. According to Moscow, the conflict requires a permanent solution that would address its root causes.

Drones attack major energy facility in Russia’s Voronezh – media
09.11.2025 09:57
Overnight on Sunday, November 9, drones attacked Voronezh CHPP-1 (combined heat and power plant) in Russia, the city’s largest supplier of heat for residential buildings and major industrial enterprises.
Ukrinform reports this with reference to the Astra Telegram channel. Local residents reported explosions during the night, and some households experienced power outages.
Regional governor Aleksandr Gusev announced a missile alert in the region.
Messages appeared in local chat groups claiming that the power plant caught fire during the attack.
An eyewitness captured the moment of the strike on video. According to Astra’s analysis, the footage shows Voronezh CHPP-1 located within the city.
According to publicly available data, the combined heat and power plant is part of JSC RIR Energo. Its installed electric capacity is 378.3 MW, and its heat output is 1,389.3 Gcal per hour.
CHPP-1 supplies heating to four districts of Voronezh as well as more than a thousand enterprises, including the city’s largest plant, Voronezhsintezkauchuk.
As Ukrinform reported, on the night of November 6, a group of drones attacked several key fuel and energy facilities in Russia.

IDF Airstrikes Target Hezbollah Smuggling Operations in Southern Lebanon
November 9, 2025
The Israeli Defense Forces launched airstrikes against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon on November 8. The operation specifically targeted weapon smuggling routes and operatives.
These strikes represent a significant escalation aimed at preventing the militant group’s rearmament.According to military statements, the action was a direct response to ceasefire violations.
The IDF emphasized its commitment to disrupting Hezbollah’s military infrastructure. The situation underscores the fragile nature of the current truce.
Details of the Military Operation and Its Immediate Aftermath
The airstrikes focused on villages in the Tyre district. They hit known weapons storage facilities linked to Hezbollah’s Radwan Force. The Israel Air Force conducted these precision strikes after issuing civilian evacuation warnings.
One Hezbollah operative was confirmed killed in the Baraashit area. He was reportedly involved in rehabilitating the group’s militant infrastructure. Smoke was seen rising from the targeted sites, according to local Lebanese media reports.
The IDF stated its actions were defensive and preemptive. The goal is to maintain a strategic advantage and deter future attacks. This operation follows a pattern of targeted strikes along the border region.
Hezbollah’s Defiant Stance and Regional Implications
Hezbollah has publicly rejected calls for political negotiations with Israel.
The group maintains that the ceasefire does not obligate them to diplomatic talks. This position highlights the deep-seated tensions that persist. The political fallout within Lebanon is complex.
The government faces internal pressure and international demands to control Hezbollah. The country’s fragile economy and social structure are further strained by these developments.Regional stability remains a major concern.
The conflict has potential spillover effects that could impact the wider Middle East. International observers are closely monitoring the situation for signs of escalation.
The Strategic Calculus Behind the Airstrikes
Israel’s strategy appears focused on containment. By targeting smuggling routes, the IDF aims to degrade Hezbollah’s capabilities. This approach seeks to create a buffer of security along the northern border.
The decision to issue warnings before strikes is noteworthy. It reflects an effort to minimize civilian casualties while pursuing military objectives. This tactic also communicates a calculated, rather than indiscriminate, use of force.
The long-term effectiveness of such operations is debated. While they may temporarily disrupt enemy activities, they do not address root political conflicts. A sustainable solution remains elusive without broader diplomatic engagement.
The recent IDF airstrikes in southern Lebanon demonstrate a continued commitment to countering Hezbollah’s military buildup.
These targeted operations highlight the ongoing volatility of the Israel-Lebanon border region. The strategic confrontation between these adversaries shows no signs of immediate resolution.

UK to help protect Belgium after suspected Russian drone incursions
November 9, 2025
Britain is providing military support to Belgium after a series of suspected Russian drone incursions into its airspace, the new chief of the defence staff has said.
Sir Richard Knighton told the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg that his Belgian counterpart had asked for assistance earlier this week and that equipment and personnel were now on the way.
Brussels Airport was forced to close temporarily on Thursday night after drones were spotted nearby. They were also seen in other locations, including a military base.
It follows a series of drone incursion over several Nato nations that disrupted air travel. Russia has denied accusations of conducting "hybrid warfare" on allies of Ukraine.
Sir Richard said it was not known for sure if the incursions were by Russia, but that it was "plausible" they had been ordered by Moscow.
Defence Secretary John Healey said in a statement: "As hybrid threats grow, our strength lies in our alliances and our collective resolve to defend, deter and protect our critical infrastructure and airspace".
Members of the RAF's 2 Force Protection Wing are likely to be deployed, the BBC understands.
Alongside Nato allies, Sir Richard added that the UK would help Belgium "by providing our kit and capability".
The German defence ministry said on Friday that it too would support Belgium with anti-drone measures after a request from Brussels.
About 3,000 Brussels Airlines passengers were affected by Thursday's disruption, with the carrier saying it faced "considerable costs" from cancelling or diverting dozens of flights.
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and the Belgian security services have said they suspect Russia of being behind the incursion, but Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken previously indicated there was no evidence to suggest this.
"At first, drones flying over our military bases were seen as our problem," Francken said earlier this week.
"Now it has become a serious threat affecting civilian infrastructure across multiple European countries."

Sudanese Military Intercepts Drone Attack Amid Truce Announcement by RSF
Last updated: November 9, 2025
On Saturday, the Sudanese military successfully intercepted a drone attack launched by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) targeting the strategic southern city of El-Obeid.
This escalation comes just two days after the RSF proclaimed its acceptance of a truce proposal supported by the United States and several Middle Eastern nations.
The conflict between the RSF and the Sudanese army has been ongoing since April 2023, leading to significant violence and territorial shifts. Recently, the RSF captured El-Fasher, the military’s last stronghold in western Darfur.
In response to the drone threat aimed at El-Obeid, a military source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that the military’s air defense system was successfully activated, neutralizing the drone before it could strike its intended target.
El-Obeid, located in North Kordofan state, holds strategic importance as it serves as a key connection between the capital, Khartoum, and the Darfur region.
Control over this city would provide the RSF with a critical supply line, enhancing its position in the ongoing hostilities.
Following the loss of El-Fasher, the RSF has asserted its dominance over all five state capitals in western Sudan, as well as portions of the southern region, while the army maintains control over much of the north, east, and center of the country.
The RSF’s takeover of El-Fasher has been accompanied by disturbing reports of mass atrocities, including killings, sexual violence, and extensive looting, which have spurred international condemnation and outcry.
Despite the RSF’s willingness to engage in a truce, the United Nations has voiced deep concerns regarding apparent preparations for escalated hostilities, raising questions about the durability of the ceasefire and the implications for civilians who are already suffering the effects of this prolonged conflict.
The war has claimed tens of thousands of lives, displaced nearly 12 million people, and has triggered a severe hunger crisis across the affected regions.
Both factions have faced serious accusations of perpetrating grave atrocities, underscoring the escalating humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan.

Liège Airport air traffic halted again after drone sighting
9 November 2025092
Air traffic at Liège Airport was suspended for about 30 minutes on Saturday evening following the sighting of an unidentified drone, Belgian air traffic control agency skeyes confirmed.
Takeoffs and landings were halted around 19:00 after the drone was spotted in the vicinity of the airport. Operations gradually resumed around 19:30, and the airport is now “fully operational again,” according to skeyes.
This marks the third such disruption in recent days. Air traffic at Liège Airport was temporarily suspended on Thursday and Friday for similar reasons, while flights to and from both Liège and Brussels Airports were halted earlier in the week after drone activity was detected near restricted airspace.
Belgian authorities have also logged multiple drone incursions near military bases in recent weeks. The origin of these flights remains under investigation, but security services are reportedly examining the possibility of Russian involvement.
A recent police report also revealed over 100 illegal drone flights detected in the Brussels area, raising growing concerns about airspace security and surveillance vulnerabilities.

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) — Oversight and Armed Services Committees
Ask a Pol asks:
Do you have any takeaway from last week’s UAP hearing?*
*interview conducted week after public UAP hearing conducted September 9, 2025 — and the 119th Congress has basically been frozen in place since then, because the House jammed the Senate with their government funding bill before Speaker Mike Johnson gaveled the chamber into an impromptu extended vacation.
Key Mace:
“Hopefully it’s us, right? But it might not be,” Rep. Nancy Mace exclusively told Ask a Pol.
“What do you do? What do you take away from that — from a guy who’s so believable, who’s scared to death testifying for his first time before Congress telling you it’s not us and it’s not a foreign entity, you know?
So how do you swallow that pill, right? He was scared. He was nervous.”

The image, titled “24489 Taken Aprox 24 miles north west of Luke Air force Base Phoenix, AZ. Lab H4C” caused the entire 4Chan site to allegedly get shut down.
The image has been lost since February 2017 until now. While this is most likely a fake digital image, it still passed every artificial intelligence test I ran it through.
I personally think it is a digital composite. If it is real then it has been put back together after going through a shredder and is missing pieces intentionally. What do you think?

David Wilcock LIVE: The Divine Beacon
November 9, 2025
Deep within you, there is a Divine Beacon of radiant light, peace and happiness. Many have called this the Higher Self – or the Christ Within.
In this show, David will share techniques on how to identify and attune with your own Divine Beacon, to bring you out of the depths of sorrow and the murky waters of depression, and back into the supernal grace of the Divine Presence.
Most of us are unaware of the Divine Beacon that is within us – and we have to work diligently to uncover this great love that always lies within. Meditation, dreamwork, synchronicity, community and scholarship can all produce results.
Ancient prophecies, like that of the Egyptian Asclepius' Lament, foretold of a time where many of us would be unaware of this radiant light of hope within us.
David Wilcock will share from his own personal experiences of finding this Divine Beacon, and attuning to the glory of the Christ Consciousness that is within each of us.
Without this resplendent remembrance, life can seem distant and forlorn. David will give practical tips on how to reunify with your Higher Self – and find the peace and guidance that is already within you!
