Portland City Councilor Suggests Fire that Burned Her Car and House Was Targeted Political Violence
Fire damaged a Portland house and car belonging to City Councilor Candace Avalos. She has been a frequent critic of the Police Bureau and earlier this year advocated to redirect $2 million in new funding earmarked for police to Portland Parks & Recreation, a move that was seen as an attempt by the City Council’s progressive caucus to undermine cops at the expense of public safety.
Vashon Locust, a 51-year old homeless man, was arrested on suspicion of starting the blaze. Police say Locust had been trying to stay warm and lit a small fire. That fire would grow to consume a carport, Avalos’ car, and the side of her home. Locust has a prior police history, but has not been incarcerated. The police initially said that the fire was suspicious, but after investigation, they found there was no evidence to suggest the fire had been set deliberately or that it targeted Avalos.
Avalos and some of her supporters alleged that the fire was an act of political violence.
