China Bars U.S. Military From Access To Rare Earths, Increasing Risk Of "Derailing" Trade Truce

China plans to ease exports of rare earths and other restricted materials to the U.S. through a “validated end-user” (VEU) system that would bar firms linked to the U.S. military while fast-tracking approvals for others, according to a new report from the Wall Street Journal.

The VEU would let Xi Jinping honor his pledge to President Trump to facilitate exports while ensuring materials don’t reach military suppliers. If enforced strictly, the system could complicate imports for U.S. automotive and aerospace companies with both civilian and defense contracts. The plan remains subject to change, sources said.

WSJ writes that rare-earth magnets and similar materials are used in both civilian products—like electric vehicles and jets—and military hardware such as fighters and drones. The proposed VEU mirrors the U.S. version, active since 2007, which allows pre-approved firms to import sensitive goods without individual licenses but requires compliance inspections.

Since April, China has limited rare-earth exports to gain leverage in the trade war. After the Oct. 30 Trump–Xi truce, Beijing pledged to issue general licenses to “ease the flow of controlled materials,” though it appears to be maintaining some restrictions.

Beijing has not specified which companies will qualify or how long VEU approvals will last. Under the U.S. model, similar clearances have been revoked—an issue that has unsettled Beijing. As uncertainty persists, many firms continue to seek non-Chinese sources.

Thieves have broken into Syria’s National Museum in Damascus and stolen several valuable Roman artifacts, according to multiple media reports.

Turmoil in Syria following years of civil war culminated last year in the ouster of longtime leader Bashar Assad, plunging the country into months of clashes between the new government’s forces and rival factions.

The break-in reportedly took place on Sunday evening and was discovered early Monday. The Associated Press said the thieves stole several ancient statues dating back to the Roman era, while other outlets reported that six gold ingots were among the missing items. An investigation is underway.

The theft followed warnings from international organizations. In June, the Paris-based International Council of Museums (ICOM) reported that an active black market for cultural objects had emerged in Syria with looting and illicit trafficking of artifacts being on the rise. Academics and cybersecurity professionals warn that a wave of fake scientific research created with artificial intelligence (AI) is quietly slipping past plagiarism checks and into the scholarly record. This phenomenon puts the future credibility of scientific research at risk by amplifying the long-running industry of “paper-mill” fraud, experts say.

Academic paper mills—fake organizations that profit from falsified studies and authorship—have plagued scholars for years and AI is now acting as a force multiplier.

Some experts believe structural changes are needed, not just better plagiarism checkers, to solve the problem.

The scope of the problem is staggering, with more than 10,000 research papers retracted globally in 2023, according to Nature Portfolio.

Manuscripts fabricated using large language models (LLMs) are proliferating across multiple academic disciplines and platforms, including Google Scholar, the University of Borås found. A recent analysis published in Nature Portfolio observed that LLM tools including ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude can generate plausible research that passes standard plagiarism checks.

In May, Diomidis Spinellis, a computer science academic and professor at the Athens University of Economics and Business, published an independent study of AI-generated content found in the Global International Journal of Innovative Research after discovering his name had been used in a false attribution.

Spinellis noted that just five of the 53 articles examined with the fewest in-text citations showed signs of human involvement. AI detection scores confirmed “high probabilities” of AI-created content in the remaining 48.

A federal judge has ordered Long Island's Suffolk County, NY, to pay $112 million in damages after hundreds of illegal immigrants were detained by local authorities on behalf of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The ruling determined that both the county and the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office violated the constitutional rights of 674 individuals who were kept in county jails in 2017 even after posting bail or resolving their criminal cases.

“This decision brings long-overdue accountability,” said Jose Perez, Deputy General Counsel at LatinoJustice PRLDEF, which represented the plaintiffs. “The jury confirmed what we have argued all along, that Suffolk County’s actions trampled the basic due process rights guaranteed under the 14th Amendment.”

The case began when a 34-year-old Long Island resident, originally from Guatemala, filed a complaint after being held in a Suffolk County jail beyond his scheduled release date. The lawsuit alleged that he was detained “for ICE’s administrative convenience” rather than any lawful basis, reports PIX11.

According to court filings, the man was arrested in April 2017 in Central Islip. Although his cousin paid a $1,000 bail to secure his release, he was never told the bail had been processed and was instead transferred first to ICE’s Varick Street Detention Center in Manhattan, then later to Bergen County Jail in New Jersey.

The court found that the plaintiff suffered serious physical and emotional harm, including “loss of liberty, emotional distress, humiliation, and economic loss.”

She told him she flew in after she was "attacked in a woman's locker room at Gold's Gym this week by a self-identifying trans woman with a documented history of domestic violence."

Wiener is a proponent and architect of trans legislation in California. He worked hard to make sure the state was a transgender sanctuary state, meaning children could be given sex change treatments without parental approval. He has advocated for prostitution and also worked to reduce sentences for gay pedophiles. He is running for Congress to replace long-time San Francisco Rep. Nancy Pelosi. Her daughter is running for Wiener's seat.

No trust deed. Billions of tax dollars to be spent without oversight by Nauru

The Labor Government’s deal with Nauru to resettle unwanted refugees will cost Australian taxpayers billions, spent on who knows what.

So far, the Government has transferred at least $388m to a trust fund which solely benefits the Nauruan Government, without signing a stand-alone trust deed to govern how the money is spent or otherwise controlled.

By the Australian Government’s own projections, at least $2B could be transferred to this trust fund.

But how is the trust fund governed, and by whom? We are not to know. Our Freedom of Information request to the Department of Home Affairs for the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Australia and Nauru, and the trust deed setting out the financial arrangements for the MOU, was met with “no discrete document exists.”

MWM received a completely blacked-out copy of the MOU. Even the title was blacked out. The reason given is that the MOU falls within an FOI exemption for “documents affecting National Security, Defence or International Relations.” Specifically:

“The phrase ‘international relations’ has been interpreted as meaning the ability of the Australian Government to maintain good working relations with other governments and international organisations and to protect the flow of confidential information between them. The expectation of damage to international relations must be reasonable in all the circumstances, having regard to the nature of the information; the circumstances in which it was communicated; and the nature and extent of the relationship. There must be real and substantial grounds for the conclusion that are supported by evidence.

“The information contained in the document relates to confidential agreements between the Australian Government and the Republic of Nauru. The Republic of Nauru is a sovereign nation and the Government of Nauru is responsible for granting long-term visas to people who no longer have a legal right to remain in Australia.

“I consider releasing the information marked ‘s33(a)(iii)’ would adversely impact on the ability of the Department to maintain good working relations with the Government of Nauru. This assessment is made considering the nature of the information contained within the document and the current nature and extent of the Australian Government’s relationship with the Government of Nauru.”

Australian taxpayers have forked out nearly $1.4million this year to keep our seven former prime ministers flying, driving and running offices.

The figures were released by the Independent Parliamentary Expenses Authority (IPEA), the body responsible for managing payments to politicians and their staff.

The report, which only covers travel and office costs, excludes the leaders' lifetime pensions, which can reach hundreds of thousands of dollars annually.

Paul Keating and Tony Abbott receive around $300,000 per year, John Howard about $345,000, and Rudd and Gillard approximately $200,000 each.

Malcolm Turnbull has emerged as the biggest spender, claiming $325,935 in expenses since January, more than any other former leader.

His Sydney office alone has cost taxpayers $294,857, exceeding the total annual spending of any other ex-prime minister.

Turnbull also claimed $2,905 for his wife, Lucy Turnbull, to accompany him on a trip from Sydney to Adelaide for a conference in August, making him the only former leader to claim family travel this year.

His car-related costs reached $16,550, including a $1,000 insurance excess after his government vehicle was sideswiped.

At the other end of the scale, Julia Gillard recorded the lowest total at $96,300, though she claimed two $1,000 accident excesses earlier in the year.

Gillard, now based overseas, continues to chair several international organisations including the Wellcome Trust and a global institute for women's leadership.

Scott Morrison's expenses totalled $207,042, including a $1,000 car accident excess in January.

The former Liberal leader, who retired from politics in 2024, has since taken up several private sector roles, including as vice chair of corporate advisory firm American Global Strategies.

Tony Abbott recorded $229,221 in spending this year, mostly for office facilities and Sydney-based operations.

His expenses were comparable to John Howard, who claimed $215,030 in total, including more than $12,000 in flights and over $18,000 in car costs.

Howard, now 86, continues to maintain a full office and travel schedule.

Kevin Rudd, 68, who currently serves as Australia's ambassador to the United States, recorded $129,612 in expenses in his capacity as a former prime minister.

NSO group names David Friedman chairman amid efforts to overcome US blacklist

Friedman notably served as Trump's ambassador to Israel during the president's first term.

Israeli cyberattack company NSO Group has appointed former US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman as its chairman. NSO was acquired last month by a group of US investors headed by Hollywood producer Robert Simonds.

Friedman and the American investment team will undertake vigorous efforts to get the company removed from the US Commerce Department's blacklist, thus making it easier to sell systems to federal authorities, and buy equipment and software from US companies.

Friedman's appointment was made after the transfer of ownership of the company from Luxembourg-based Dufresne holdings group, owned by NSO cofounder, Omri Lavie, to the US investment group, which has injected several tens of millions of dollars into the company and erased debts totaling $600 million. The company has stressed in a press release, "The three cofounders of NSO no longer have any holding in the company."

In addition to removing NSO from the blacklist, the company also hopes for a change in US and Israeli policy on distribution of cyberattack and spyware tools, after the Biden era, which greatly restricted Israeli companies in the field and NSO in particular. This not only harmed business results and the loss of many customers but also caused a decline in the development of new intelligence software and even negatively affected the intelligence picture for Western and pro-Western militaries during the war in Israel.

At the beginning of 2022, Israel's Ministry of Defense, at the request of the US, tightened conditions for the sale cyberattack tools and limited them to a list of some 30 democratic countries only, with many of Israel's allies — including the UAE and India — excluded from the list. This damaged NSO's business performance and led other Israeli companies, such as Candiru or Quadream, to sell their assets or even close their doors.

"Despite the negative and largely unfair criticism directed against the company, you work with pride and endless dedication to providing advanced technologies to protect security and save innocents," Friedman told NSO's employees this morning at the company's offices in Glilot near Tel Aviv.

NSO said it will continue to operate from Israel under the supervision of the Ministry of Defense "While expanding its global activities and striving to renew activities in the US."

Over 50 People Charged In MA Child Sex Abuse Investigation

A three-day statewide operation resulted in arrests across 36 communities.

More than 50 people in Massachusetts were charged in a three-day, statewide operation last week, according to the Massachusetts State Police.

Operation Firewall resulted in 56 arrests across 36 Massachusetts communities. The defendants, ranging in age from 18 to 75, are facing charges connected to child pornography, child enticement, as well as charges stemming from outstanding warrants for assault and battery of a child, rape of a child, and failure to register with the Sex Offender Registry Board.

State troopers executed 34 residential search warrants and seized 229 devices, according to the Massachusetts State Police.

“The Massachusetts State Police remain committed to investigating crimes against children and holding perpetrators accountable,” said State Police Col. Geoffrey Noble. “Over several months, members of the State Police’s Division of Investigative Services used their training and skill to develop these cases. I commend the Troopers for their hard work to overcome the evasive tactics of suspects and build a comprehensive operational plan to safely remove predators from our streets.”

Spy chief warns of China espionage threat to business, critical infrastructure

Australia's top intelligence chief has accused Chinese state-backed hackers of attempting to infiltrate the nation's critical infrastructure and telecommunications networks, warning that great-power competition is fuelling "unprecedented levels of espionage" that cost the economy an estimated $12.5 billion in 2023-24.

Addressing a business forum in Melbourne on Wednesday, ASIO director-general Mike Burgess said Australia had entered an era of "strategic surprise and security fragility" and was bracing for major disruption.

"I have previously said we're getting closer to the threshold for high-impact sabotage," Mr Burgess told an Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) forum in Melbourne on Wednesday.

"Well, I regret to inform you — we're there now."

Mr Burgess cited Chinese hacking groups Salt Typhoon and Volt Typhoon, which have targeted telecommunications networks in Australia and the United States.

Referring to Volt Typhoon's campaign against networks supporting the US military presence in Guam, he said the hackers compromised American critical infrastructure networks to pre-position for potential sabotage.

"The penetrations gave China the ability to turn off telecommunications and other critical infrastructure," he said.

"And yes, we have seen Chinese hackers probing our critical infrastructure as well."

While not naming Beijing directly, Mr Burgess made another apparent reference to China, saying he was aware of "one nation state — no prizes for guessing which one — conducting multiple attempts to scan and penetrate critical infrastructure in Australia and other Five Eyes countries".

Mr Burgess said the attempts had targeted water, transport, telecommunications and energy networks, describing the activity as "highly sophisticated" and designed to gain persistent, undetected access to systems.

"And when they have penetrated your networks, they actively and aggressively map your systems, and seek to maintain persistent undetected access that enables them to conduct sabotage at a time and moment of their choosing."

His comments echo recent warnings from US and UK intelligence agencies about Chinese cyber groups attempting to seed access across Western critical infrastructure.

He warned that Australians may not yet grasp the scale of the threat.

"I do not think we — and I mean all of us — truly appreciate how disruptive, how devastating, this could be," he said.
