I've noticed that many scientific discoveries have supposedly been made "by accident" or "serendipitously". I think that's because they don't want to admit they were intentionally doing something that would sound stupid and embarassing if they told the truth for example, that they were bored and stuck a fork in the electric outlet to see what would happen and somehow levitation was revealed.
