the whole 'giraffes standing on top of each other' thing seems to be that one would measure to the top the back because giraffes would be unable to stand on each other's heads.

I should have said "would be unable to stack to a height by standing on each other's heads." I suppose if a giraffe put his head on the ground another giraffe could stand on top of it, but that wouldn't be a friendly thing to do.
