Trump deploying US military to Damascus, Syria Airbase

The White House is preparing to deploy the United States military to an air base in the Syrian capital of Damascus to help shore up a potential security pact between Syria and Israel that U.S. President Donald Trump is currently brokering, according to a new report.

Washington has swiveled its relations with Damascus since the fall of President Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, and the crumbling of his Iranian-allied regime.

The country’s new president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, is due to meet with Trump at the White House on Monday, a historic first for a Syrian head of state. The U.S. in June lifted longstanding sanctions on Syria and has petitioned the United Nations Security Council to remove its own measures leveled against al-Sharaa.

The U.S. is planning to use the base to keep an eye on a possible agreement between Israel and Syria, Reuters reported, citing six sources familiar with preparations at the facility.

It is not clear which site is referenced in the report, nor how many U.S. troops would be involved and when they could arrive. The news agency said it had agreed to omit the exact location after a U.S. administration official requested that the information be withheld for operational security reasons.

At least 1 dead as Cambodia, Thailand trade accusations over fresh border clashes

At least one person was killed in Cambodia on Nov 12 amid a flare-up of its conflict with Thailand as the neighbours accused each other of opening fire along a disputed part of their border, threatening a US-brokered truce.

Five days of hostilities erupted between the two countries in July, killing 43 people and displacing around 300,000 before a truce backed by US President Donald Trump cooled tensions.

However, Thailand on Nov 10 paused implementation of a follow-on deal to wind down hostilities, claiming a blast from a newly laid landmine had wounded four of its soldiers.

Secret Plans for Media Censorship

William Evans reports on efforts by Australia’s Department of Home Affairs to revive the four-decade dead D-Notice system.

Documents obtained by Declassified Australia show that following the June 2019 Federal Police raids on the ABC and News Corp, the Department of Home Affairs began secret efforts to revive a four-decade dead system to censor the Australian media.

Declassified Australia can reveal that a plan to introduce the “D-Notice,” as the Defence Notice to media is known, is being developed in secret with help from Britain’s Defence media advisory body.

A D-Notice system had operated in Australia until the mid 1980s to prevent journalists voluntarily from publication of identities, techniques and operational details of intelligence and defence operations, particularly by ASIS. It was ignored by many journalists and fell into misuse.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) had raided the offices of the ABC and News Corp journalist Annika Smethurst on June 4 and 5, 2019, in response to their reporting on alleged war crimes and a proposed domestic spying plan.

Following the raids, Mike Pezzullo, then secretary of the Department of Home Affairs — a portfolio that included ASIO and the AFP — texted a close adviser to then Liberal Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Scott Briggs, with plans to censor the media. These texts had been brought to light in a 2023 report in The Age.

Just two weeks after the AFP’s raids on the media, on June 18, 2019, Pezzullo told Briggs that then Minister for Home Affairs Peter Dutton, “likes a D-Notice type” approach.
