11 September 1777, at the Battle of Brandywine, Patrick Ferguson, a British rifle corps commander, chose to not shoot an American officer in the back. That officer was General George Washington.
British Major Patrick Ferguson led a Loyalist militia in the Southern Campaign fighting the Patriot “Over Mountain Men” at the Battle of Kings Mountain in South Carolina.
The Over Mountain Men were well supplied with over five hundred pounds of gunpowder, made and delivered by Gunpowder Maker of the Revolution, Mary McKeehan Patton.
The Over Mountain Men defeated Major Ferguson and his recruited loyalists.
A marker was placed at Ferguson’s gravesite by the U.S. government.
