INTRODUCTION

Among the wonderful technological discoveries which men of talent, especially in the present era, have made with God's help, the Church welcomes and promotes with special interest those which have a most direct relation to men's minds and which have uncovered new avenues of communicating most readily news, views and teachings of every sort. The most important of these inventions are those media which, such as the press, movies, radio, television and the like, can, of their very nature, reach and influence, not only individuals, but the very masses and the whole of human society, and thus can rightly be called the media of social communication.

The Church recognizes that these media, if properly utilized, can be of great service to mankind, since they greatly contribute to men's entertainment and instruction as well as to the spread and support of the Kingdom of God. The Church recognizes, too, that men can employ these media contrary to the plan of the Creator and to their own loss. Indeed, the Church experiences maternal grief at the harm all too often done to society by their evil use. Hence, this sacred Synod, attentive to the watchful concern manifested by the Supreme Pontiffs and Bishops in a matter of such great importance, judges it to be its duty to treat of the principal questions linked with the media of social communication. It trusts, moreover, that the teaching and regulations it thus sets forth will serve to promote, not only the eternal welfare of Christians, but also the progress of all mankind.

As Pope Francis remains hospitalised in critical condition fighting a complex respiratory infection and pneumonia in both lungs, prayers for his recovery and wishes of support are coming from different religions and interfaith groups around the world.

In addition to the more obvious sources of support in the Catholic Church, the likes of Buddhist, Jewish and Muslim faith leaders have offered prayers for the Pope’s recovery. Their voices have been joined by those from the wider and lesser-known reaches of the Church, such as the patriarchs of Catholicism’s Eastern Churches, as the whole world follows the drama around the 88-year-old Pope and his health that is unfolding in Rome.

On 25 February, an inter-religious prayer service was held for the Pope at the Mahabodhi Buddhist temple in Colombo, Sri Lanka, where he visited in 2015.

During that trip, Pope Francis became only the second pope in history to visit the temple, changing his schedule at the last minute to pay his respects at the site.

While there, the pontiff listened as Buddhist monks chanted and prayed while opening the stupa (or casket) containing sacred relics that are traditionally only put on display once a year, with Buddhists from throughout the country lining up for days in advance to pay homage.

Opening the casket to allow Francis to venerate the relics was seen as a rare privilege and a sign of respect.

After the Pope’s admittance on 14 February to Gemelli Hospital, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople was among the first to send his well-wishes, writing in a handwritten letter that he was praying for Pope Francis’s “quick return to his important and sacred duties”.

Imam Yahya Sergio Yahe Pallavicini of Mecca has also praised the Pope as a “champion of dialogue between Christians and Muslims”, while Noemi Di Segni, President of the Italian Jewish Communities, said: “Francis’s voice and actions are a key reference point for interfaith dialogue and all of humanity.”

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Established almost 500 years ago, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith is no longer “the Inquisition” — rather, its main focus is handing down the teachings of the apostles, said the office’s prefect.

“Our mission is to promote and protect the doctrine of the faith. It is a task that will always be necessary for the church, which has the duty to transmit the teaching of the apostles to the next generation,” Cardinal Luis Ladaria Ferrer, congregation prefect, told Vatican News Feb. 1.

Called the Sacred Roman and Universal Inquisition when it was instituted in 1542, the congregation was initially a tribunal exclusively for cases of heresy and schism, but soon its responsibilities were expanded to include “everything relating directly or indirectly to faith and morals,” according to the congregation’s website.

Of the many people examined in the early days, the one mentioned most often is Italian scientist Galileo Galilei, who was found “vehemently suspect of heresy.” St. John Paul II issued a declaration in 1992, recognizing the error of Galileo’s trial.

The Index of Forbidden Books was originally entrusted to the Inquisition until it became its own congregation for three centuries until 1917 when its duties were again handed back to the Sacred Congregation of the Holy Office — the Inquisition’s new name after it was reorganized by Pope Pius X in 1908.

It was again reformed in 1965 by St. Paul VI and renamed the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. The Index of Prohibited Books was also abrogated.
