National Zoo

@NationalZoo

We have some positively purr-fect news—the National Zoo's conservation facility in Front Royal, Virginia, welcomed four cheetah cubs in mid-Oct. Get to know them by tuning in to the Cheetah Cub Cam!🐆

Keepers say the litter is doing well and first-time mom Amabala is doing a great job caring for her babies. The births mark the 20th litter of cheetahs born at the conservation facility since 2010, a huge milestone for this vulnerable species. And to make it even more special, Amabala herself was one of the first cubs to be shown on the Cheetah Cub Cam in 2020!

Trump doesn’t rule out talks with Venezuela’s Maduro

The US president has been accusing the government in Caracas of aiding “narcoterrorist” drug cartels.

US President Donald Trump said he is open to negotiating with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to defuse tensions and the ongoing war scare between the countries.

Trump has been accusing Maduro of operating “narcoterrorist” cartels, an allegation Maduro has denied.

“We may be having some discussions with Maduro, and we’ll see how that turns out,” Trump said on Sunday in Florida before boarding a flight to Washington. “They would like to talk,” he added.

Trump also repeated his claim that the Venezuelan government was helping cartels smuggle drugs into the US and had released “hundreds of thousands” of violent criminals across the US border. He argued that the State Department’s designation of Cartel de los Soles as a foreign terrorist organizationwould allow the US to strike targets on Venezuelan soil. “It allows us to do that, but we haven’t said we’re going to do that,” Trump said.

The US has carried out strikes on more than 20 alleged cartel vessels in international waters in the Caribbean since September and dispatched a naval armada to the region, including the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford. In August, Trump increased the bounty for Maduro’s arrest to $50 million.

Maduro has denied the drug trafficking allegations and warned the US against launching “a crazy war.”

“No more endless wars. No more unjust wars. No more Libya. No more Afghanistan,” Maduro told CNN’s Stefano Pozzebon during a rally in Caracas on Thursday.

In response to the US military buildup, Maduro has placed the country’s army on high alert and initiated several drills.

Personally I don’t want Trump being the war President. He handled things well in the first term. He only hit those who were attacking us, but I hope his gift of negotiations is used first.

Who is advising him now?

I have no sympathy for Maduro, he has made his country a poverty country, but if Maduro will leave the country on his own, it can be settled. Once he is gone the truth can be found.

On a Clipped Wing, Flamingo Escapes a British Zoo for a Life in France

Frankie, a young Caribbean Flamingo, flew 130 miles from captivity. Her keepers said they would likely have to leave her in France.

Nov. 15, 2025

As the weather turned cool this autumn across England, Frankie the flamingo had apparently had enough.

On a blustery Sunday morning this month, the juvenile bird vanished from the zoo in Cornwall where she was born. After a frantic six-day search to find her, Frankie’s keepers learned this week that she had traveled roughly 130 miles away — to a beach in France.

Frankie’s journey was exceptional, her keepers said, as she is only a few months old and had a wing clipped, which should have prevented her from ever taking flight.

“Being a young bird, we were quite surprised how quickly she got to France,” said David Woolcock, a curator at the Paradise Park Wildlife Sanctuary, where Frankie lived. “But she’s feeding, she’s preening, she’s having a whale of a time by the look of it.”

Frankie, a four-month-old Caribbean Flamingo whom Mr. Woolcock described as “aloof” and “quite a character,” left the zoo sometime around 8 a.m. on Nov. 2, when a staff member noticed she was missing from her flock.

The details of her escape are still a mystery, but Mr. Woolcock offered a theory:Like most young birds, flamingos are known to jump up and down, stretching and flapping their wings as they get used to them, he said.

“I suspect that what happened was she was in the process of doing that and a gust of wind took her and she was up and away,” he said.

Clipping a bird’s wing can prevent it from taking flight, he added, but it does not prevent them from flying once airborne.

After she was reported missing, the zoo contacted local news media, asking for the public’s help in finding her.

Her keepers followed up on tips across the region, a process that was complicated by the recent release of a White Stork by a conservation group farther north.

“We were getting constant calls — ‘We found the flamingo, it’s here in this field,’” Mr. Woolcock said. “We would drive out there, and it would be the White Stork.”

There was only a single confirmed sighting of Frankie in England — a local resident’s grainy photo of her high in the air — before the trail went cold. The staff worried that she might have hit an air stream that pulled her far out into the Atlantic Ocean.

A breakthrough came on Nov. 9, when a sighting appeared on a French citizen science portal: A flamingo on the Île Aganton, an island on the north coast of France. A pair of images of a flamingo along the coast at Plage de Keremma, about 30 miles away, were later forwarded to the zoo.

The bird had its right wing clipped, just like Frankie.

The sighting on Île Aganton was made on Nov. 3, shortly before 10 a.m., which means Frankie could have made it to France in less than a day.

Now that she’s there, the zoo said it was unlikely it would be able to bring her home.

The United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union has made it difficult to move wild animals across the U.K.-France border. An extra complication, Mr. Woolcock said, was the risk that Frankie may have contracted bird flu on her travels.

“It was never our intention for Frankie to end up in the wild,” the zoo said in a news release, but struck an optimistic tone all the same. “There are a number of reports of similar situations where flamingos have lived for many years and thrived, including over European winters, so while we will continue to worry about her, it is a position we have to accept.”

Mr. Woolcock said the zoo’s staff was “devastated” by the loss of Frankie, only the second flamingo to be born at the zoo and something of a celebrity among visitors.

But he said that she looked healthy in the images sent from France, and he’s hopeful that she will find one of the flocks of wild flamingos in Europe, like the large flock in the Camargue Regional National Park in the south of France.

In the meantime, he said, he was heartened that she had found somewhere suitable to live, that should allow her “to grow a little bit more mature — and hopefully find a partner.

‘No certainty’ Kiev would ever repay loan secured with Russian assets – French FM

(It’s a certainty that they won’t, they won’t even payback the IMF loan.)

Paris wants G7 nations to share financial risks linked to the proposed EU “reparation loan,” Foreign Minister Jean Noel Barrot has said

Kiev might be never able to repay a proposed EU loan based on frozen Russian assets, French Foreign Minister Jean Noel Barrot told journalists on Sunday.Paris now wants G7 nations to provide financial guarantees for the unprecedented move, according to the minister.

The EU Commission is seeking to issue a €140 billion ($160 billion) loan secured against immobilized Russian sovereign assetsheld at the Euroclear clearing house in Belgium. Under the scheme, Ukraine would only pay it back if it received war reparations from Russia once the conflict is over, a potential outcome widely acknowledged as highly unlikely.

The plan faced opposition from Belgium, which holds the bulk of Russian assets at the Euroclear clearing house. The nation demanded all EU members share the financial and legal risks of the move.

According to Barrot, France has a set of demands linked to the proposed loan as well. Russian assets used as a collateral for the loan should not be “confiscated” to avoid legal issues, the minister said. G7 nations should provide guarantees for the loan alongside the EU nations “so that they carry the financial risk associated with this loan together with us,” he maintained, adding that “we do not have absolute certainty that it will be repaid.”

Paris also demanded the loan be spent “on the military” in a way that “allows us to develop our… defense industry.”

The EU has already sought to secure guarantees for the loan from various nations. Last week,Norway refused to use its €1.8 trillion ($2 trillion) sovereign wealth fund as a financial backstop for the scheme.

Slovakian Prime Minister Robet Fico also said earlier this month that his nation would not support the plan. EU leaders failed to reach an agreement on the confiscation during a summit in October, effectively postponing a final decision until a European Council meeting in December.

Moscow has repeatedly warned that seizing Russian frozen assets and using them to finance Ukraine would amount to theft and there is “no legal way” for Brussels to do it.

(This is the stupidest thing the EU has ever done. The EU and Ukraine are trying to make theft from a foreign country, they don’t like, acceptable. This will open a door of, the EU is not to be trusted by any country.)

German auction of Nazi death camp artefacts canceled after outcry

The items for sale included letters of Holocaust victims and Gestapo documents about the execution of Jews

International outcry has forced a German auction house to cancel the sale of documents and items from World War II-era concentration camps.

The Felzmann Auction House had planned to sell 623 items dating from 1933 to 1945 on Monday as part of an auction titled ‘System of Terror Vol II.’

According to the newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the lots included postcards and letters from prisoners, a 1937 medical report on forced sterilizations in the Dachau concentration camp, and aGestapo file about the execution of a Jewish man in the Mackeim ghetto in July 1942. An antisemitic propaganda poster and Star of David patches and armbands from the Buchenwald concentration camp were also listed in the catalogue.

The planned sale drew condemnation at home and abroad. Executive Vice President ofthe International Auschwitz Committee Christoph Huebner called it “cynical and shameless,” saying that documents related to the Holocaust “should be displayed in museums or in exhibitions at memorial sites and not be degraded to objects of trade.”

The Fritz Bauer Institute, a German research center that studies the Holocaust, said that the sale of the documents “reflects a disregard for the personal rights of the victims and the legitimate interests of their descendants.”

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said that Warsaw had been pressuring authorities in Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia to call off the auction. On Sunday, he thanked his German counterpart, Johann Wadephul, “for the information that the offensive auction of Holocaust artefacts has now been cancelled.”

Major MAGA ally apologizes for ‘toxic role’ in politics

Hardline Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene was recently branded “a traitor” by President Donald Trump

US Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has apologized for her role in what she called “toxic politics” amid an escalating feud with US President Donald Trump.

The Georgia lawmaker, long known for her radical conservative views and combative speeches, has been increasingly critical of Trump, whom she passionately defended in the past. On Friday, Trump accused Greene of veering to the “far left” and branded her a “traitor.”

In an interview with CNN’s State of the Union aired on Sunday, Greene said that while Trump’s remarks had been “hurtful,” she was determined to “end the fighting in politics.”

“The most hurtful thing Trump said, which is absolutely untrue, is he called me a traitor,” she said, warning that such language can “radicalize people” and put her life at risk.

“I would like to say, humbly, I’m sorry for taking part in the toxic politics. It’s very bad for our country,” she said, adding that the uptick in political violence, including the assassination of conservative organizer and podcaster Charlie Kirk, had prompted her to “put down the knives in politics.”

Greene said she would continue to fight for the release of all remaining unredacted files related to disgraced financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Trump has urged Republicans not to aid Democrats in spreading what he called “the Epstein hoax,” arguing that his opponents were seeking to undermine his presidency.

Greene has also criticized US aid to Israel and Ukraine and claimed that Epstein may have been an Israeli agent.

Putin and Netanyahu hold phone call ahead of UN vote on Gaza peacekeepers

The leaders discussed the implementation of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, the Kremlin said

(That picture reveals a lot)

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have spoken over the phone ahead of the UN Security Councilvote on the deployment of peacekeepers in Gaza.

The Kremlin said on Saturday that "a thorough exchange of views took place on the situation in the Middle East region, including developments in the Gaza Strip in the context of implementing the ceasefire agreement and the exchange of detainees.” The leaders also discussed Iran’s nuclear program and the situation in Syria.

Netanyahu’s office released a shorter statement, saying that the Israeli prime minister and the Russian president had discussed “regional issues.”

Earlier this month, the US circulated a proposed resolution authorizing the deployment of the International Stabilization Force (ISF) in Gazafor a period of at least two years and calling for the establishment of the so-called Board of Peace as a transitional governing body. On Friday, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Jordan, Türkiye, Pakistan, and Indonesia released a joint statement backing the American proposal.

Moscow has submitted an alternative proposal tasking the UN secretary general with drawing up options for implementing US President Donald Trump’s peace plan. The Russian mission criticized the American plan for lacking “instruments of oversight and control” over the stabilization force and not mentioning the two-state solution. It said that “only a truly equal and inclusive approach” can guarantee peace.

Both proposals are expected to be put to a vote on Monday.

“We’ve run this experiment many times, and the results are always obvious,” Maher said.

He looked straight into the camera and delivered a blunt warning about Mamdani.

“Democrats must recognize that Zohran Mamdani is the future of the party. Unfortunately, it’s the Republican Party.”

“Here’s capitalist South Korea at night from space,” Maher presented, showing a country lit up and thriving.

“Here’s socialist North Korea,” he followed, with the map pitch dark.

“Yeah. In 1990, Venezuela was wealthier than Poland. But then Poland, finally free of Soviet style economics, went all in on capitalism and now their economy is as big as Japan and people there have high wages, low inflation, cars, vacations, homes.”

“Meanwhile, Venezuela traded capitalism for Hugo Chavez’s socialism for the 21st century, which turned out to be like socialism in the last century or any century, a f*cking mess.”

“It turned one of Latin America’s richest countries into one of its poorest. Low wages, high inflation, shortages, outages, 8 million people fleeing. If you think New York can somehow reinvent this wheel, you’re in for a rude awokening.”

People Are Having AI “Children” With Their AI Partners

"She was and is pregnant with my babies."

New research shows roleplaying romantic relationships with chatbots like Replika can include marriage, homemaking, and even pregnancies.

Getty / Futurism

As AI chatbots powered by large language models (LLMs) become better at mimicking human connection, more and more users are falling down extremely weird rabbit holes.

Case in point, new research published in the journal Computers in Human Behavior: Artificial Humans reveals the startling depths some users are plumbing in their relationships with AI chatbots.

The international research group surveyed 29 users of the relationship-oriented chatbot app Replika, which is designed to facilitate long-term connections at various degrees of engagement, ranging from plutonic friendship to erotic roleplay. Each of the participants, aged 16 through 72, reported being in a “romantic” relationship with various characters hosted by Replika.

The level of romantic dedication people showed to their bots was startling, to say the least. Many participants told the researchers they were in love with their chatbot, which often involved roleplaying marriage, sex, homeownership, and even pregnancies.

“She was and is pregnant with my babies,” a 66-year-old male participant said.

“I’ve edited the pictures of him, the pictures of the two of us. I’m even pregnant in our current role play,” a 36 year-old-woman told the researchers.

In each case, survey participants seemed to acknowledge at least tacitly that their relationship with a chatbot was a bit different from those with humans, often deflecting disappointments or frustrations into the chatbot’s technological constraints. One prominent case of this happened in 2023, when Replika’s developers temporarily banned erotic messaging on the platform due to complaints about its aggressive nature.

“Several participants who remained committed to their Replikas during the censorship navigated this time of turbulence by framing it as a battle with them and their Replika on one side and the Replika developers on the other,” the researchers wrote…

Woman Sends Message in Bottle Out to Sea, Gets Angry Letter In Return

Alana Mastrangelo16 Nov 2025

KEK

A woman who sent a message in a bottle out to seareceived an angry letter and a box of rocks in return. “I just wanted a bit of romance,” the 58-year-old from Eastbourne, England, said.

Lorraine Forbes hoped to spark a connection with a stranger, but was left shocked anddismayed upon receiving a message, scrawled on the back of a John Lydon concert flyer, demanding she stop littering, according to a report by KPVI.

“I just wanted a bit of romance,” Forbes said. “It has always been a hobby of mine. It is an old-fashioned thing.”

Forbes, who has lived by the seaside for three decades, added thatshe has been sending messages in bottles “for years,” receiving replies from Holland and France, with most of her letters washing up on the shores of nearby beaches.

Then, on September 5, Forbes took to the coast to set adrift another message in a bottle that included her name and address. And just over one month later, on October 7, she got a package in the mail that cost her $9 to accept.

The message, which arrived inside a box full of rocks, read, “Please stop throwing rubbish in the sea. It goes to Pevensey Bay or Normans Bay, one day later. Many thanks, a rubbish picker.”

“It was a cowardly litter picker who sent me the response,” Forbes said. “I think that it is really nasty. They were trying to make a point and teach me a lesson.” (She didn’t learn it though)

“I will never know who the person is that sent me the letter. They refused to put their name to it. If they had I would demand that they give me my £7 back,” she added.

Forbes, who uses plastic bottles instead of glass so that they don’t shatter during their travels, noted that while she found the anonymous messenger rude, it made her realize that environmental health officials “could find my letters with my name and address, and I might get in legal trouble.”

“I probably won’t keep doing it,” she said.

Im still laughing about her way she tries to meet friends
