Trump Administration Seeks Custody Of Imprisoned Colorado Elections Clerk

Tina Peters was convicted of orchestrating a scheme to breach voting machine data driven by false claims of fraud in the 2020 election.

DENVER (AP) — The Trump administration is seeking a transfer from state prison to federal custody of a former Colorado county clerk who has become a hero to election conspiracy theorists, the state and one of her lawyers said Friday.

The Colorado Department of Corrections said Friday that it received a letter from the federal Bureau of Prisons regarding Tina Peters on Wednesday. Neither the department nor the Bureau of Prisons immediately responded to a request to provide a copy of the letter but a corrections department spokesperson, Alondra Gonzalez, confirmed the letter was a request to move Peters to federal custody.

A member of Peters’ legal team, Peter Ticktin, said he had seen the letter and also described it as a request to move her to a federal prison to serve out her sentence there.

“It is not to have her released,” he said.

While Ticktin said the letter didn’t say why the agency wanted to move Peters, he believes it is so she could more easily be involved in investigations into voting machines in the 2020 presidential election and because of health problems she has been having in state prison.

Peters, 70, was convicted of orchestrating a scheme to breach voting machine data driven by false claims of fraud in the 2020 election. Her release from prison has become a cause celebre in the election conspiracy movement.

President Donald Trump and other supporters inside and outside his administration have been urging that Peters be freed as she appeals her conviction. In September, after Peters pleaded for the president to release her ahead of the midterm elections, Trump renewed his call for her to be freed, saying “We’re going to do something.”

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser said there was no basis for a transfer to federal prison and said he would “strongly oppose” any such efforts.

“Any scheme to prevent her from being held accountable under Colorado law is outrageous,” Weiser said in a statement.

His office is also opposing an effort by Peters in federal court seeking to be released from prison while the appeal of her state conviction plays out.

VA reduces backlog of Veterans waiting for VA benefits by 57%

WASHINGTON — The Department of Veterans Affairs today announced that the backlog of Veterans waiting for VA compensation and pension benefits has dropped by more than 57% since the start of the second Trump Administration.

A VA claim for compensation or pension is considered backlogged once it has been pending for more than 125 days.Since President Trump was inaugurated Jan. 20, the backlog has dropped from 264,717 to 112,353, a 57% reduction.

The backlog reduction VA announced today was made possible through a series of record-breaking production milestones, including:

VA processed an all-time high of 3,001,734 disability compensation and pension claims in fiscal year 2025 — shattering the previous record of 2.49 million set in FY 2024.

VA processed one million disability claims by Feb. 20 — faster than ever before in a given fiscal year.

VA had its single most productive claims processing day, May 29, with 15,364 claims processed.

In July,VA processed the highest number of claims in a month in history, with 300,799 claims processed.

12-month claims processing accuracy also improved to 93.5% in September 2025, up from 91.6% in October 2024.

VA’s record-breakingFY 2025 performance also included distributing $195 billion in compensationand pension benefit payments to more than 6.9 million Veterans and survivors.

“Under President Trump, VA is constantly raising the bar for customer service and convenience,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins. “Our record claims processing productivity is proof these efforts are working. Veterans deserve fast and accurate claims decisions, and we look forward to continuing to deliver amazing results to those who have worn the uniform.”

When Panera Bread began shrinking its sandwiches and skimping on salads, it started shedding customers.

Now, to win them back, the chain plans to reinvest in the business and undo many of those same cost-cutting measures, it said Tuesday.

Once the No. 1 fast-casual brand in the U.S., Panera has dipped to No. 3, ceding the top spots to Chipotle Mexican Grill and Panda Express.

Last year, its sales fell 5% to $6.1 billion, according to Technomic estimates. For years, the chain’s traffic has been shrinking, according to CEO Paul Carbone, who took the reins earlier this year. Controversy after the chain’s foray into energy drinks didn’t help matters, either.

Panera’s troubles have coincided with a tough year for fast-casual restaurants. Chipotle, Sweetgreen and Cava have allcut their full-year forecasts as they see younger consumers eating out less frequently.

Carbone has a plan to bring back customers. Under the strategy, named “Panera RISE,” the company aims to refresh its menu, focus on value, improve its service and build new restaurants. He said the plan has the backing of the franchisees who operate roughly half of its 2,200 U.S. locations, along with the support of JAB Holding, the investment arm of the Reimann family that owns the company.

Panera’s slide has been poorly timed for JAB.The firm has been plotting an IPO for the chain’s parent company, Panera Brands, which also owns Caribou Coffee and Einstein Bros. Bagels.

In 2021, four years after taking the chain private, JAB struck a deal with Danny Meyer’s special purpose acquisition company for a merger that would take the company public again. But Panera scrapped those plans a year later, citing market conditions.In late 2023, the company confidentially filed for an initial public offering that still hasn’t happened.

When asked about the status of Panera’s IPO plans, Carbone told CNBC that the chain’s management team is currently focused on growing traffic and implementing the Panera RISE strategy.

Entering the value wars

Phase one of Panera’s plan is to improve the quality of its food, reversing cost-cutting measures imposed in the face of high inflation, according to Carbone.
