US Ambassador To Israel Mike Huckabee Held Secret Meeting With Convicted Spy Jonathan Pollard
Since being named US Ambassador to Israel, former governor of Arkansas Mike Huckabee has become seen as the embodiment of the Israel First policymaking that has sown division within the American right that re-elected President Donald J. Trump to advance an America First agenda. Huckabee's decision to hold a secret meeting with convicted Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard at the American Embassy in Jerusalem adds fuel to that fire, amplifying doubts as to whether the Trump administration is prioritizing American interests above all else.
Pollard took to Israeli media to dispel the suspicions surrounding his visit with Huckabee. “The meeting, simply put, was a personal affair. That’s it," he said. "The reason I wanted to meet him was to express my deep and sincere appreciation for everything he had done to help me when I was in prison," Pollard told the Jerusalem Post in a phone conversation on Thursday.
Born in Galveston, Texas, to Jewish parents, Pollard was imbued with a devotion to the State of Israel from birth. He attended Stanford University, where he completed a degree in political science in 1976. During his enrollment at Stanford, Pollard bragged to his classmates about his dual Israeli citizenship allowing him to work for the Mossad and attain a rank of colonel in the Israel Defense Forces. His father's work as a CIA operative embedded in Czechoslovakia during the Prague Spring was another chapter in the legend he crafted for himself on campus. Though none of his claims were true, the carefully constructed lies he wove offered prescient insight into his motives that would prove to be foreshadowing of the future that lay ahead for him.
After cultivating a career in naval intelligence following a failed effort to join the CIA, Pollard was arrested when it was revealed that he was working as a spy for the Israeli government. Pollard eventually pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to deliver national defense information to a foreign government as part of a plea bargain he agreed to in order to secure a lesser sentence for his wife due to her involvement in his crimes. Israel acknowledged its role in Pollard's spying in 1987, after he was sentenced to life in prison for violations of the Espionage Act of 1917.
