House Votes Overwhelmingly on Resolution “Denouncing the Horrors of Socialism” Hours Before Mamdani Meets with Trump – 86 Dems Vote with Republicans

The House of Representatives on Friday morning voted overwhelmingly in favor of a resolution “denouncing the horrors of socialism” just hours before New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani was scheduled to meet with President Trump.

Nearly 100 Democrats voted with Republicans.

Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar’s (R-FL) resolution credits Socialism for killing over 100,000,000 people worldwide and declares the ideology as one that “necessitates a concentration of power that has, time and time again, collapsed into communist regimes, totalitarian rule, and brutal dictatorships.”

It further points to the brutal dictators, who committed “many of the greatest crimes in history,” including Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong, Fidel Castro, Pol Pot, Kim Jong Il, Kim Jong Un, Daniel Ortega, Hugo Chavez, and Nicolás Maduro, contrasting the principles of Socialism with those espoused by the Founding Fathers and the US Constitution.

“Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring), That Congress denounces socialism in all its forms, and opposes the implementation of socialist policies in the United States,” the resolution concludes.

Mamdani arrived at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport this morning, trailed by reporters, but he did not stop to take any questions.

The resolution passed 285-98 with two members voting present and 47 not voting.

Representatives Deborah Ross (D-PA) and Janelle Bynum (D-OR) voted present.

Progressive Democrats, including Jasmine Crockett (TX), Maxwell Frost (FL), Dan Goldman (NY), and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY), voted against the measure. See the full list of Democrats who voted against condemning socialism here.

Even House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who gave his full endorsement to Mamdani, voted in favor.

Mamdani is scheduled to meet with President Trump in the Oval Office at 3 pm. This is the only event on the President’s public schedule today.
