Why Biden DOJ Didn’t Release Jeffrey Epstein Files

President Donald Trump appeared to suggest on Wednesday that the Biden administration refused to release information related to Jeffrey Epstein.

The U.S. government has indeed been in possession of a vast amount of evidence for years. But while it is impossible to know exactly why the Department of Justice (DOJ) under Joe Biden did not release the documents in full, it was more likely for legal, rather than political, reasons.

Newsweek contacted the DOJ via email for comment.

Why It Matters

Trump’s relationship with Epstein has come under renewed scrutiny after the release of 20,000 pages of documents that the House Oversight Committee received from the notorious sex offender’s estate.

This week, both chambers of Congress voted to compel the DOJ to release all the remaining records after Trump dramatically changed his stance on the issue.

The fate of the Epstein files has gripped the public, policymakers and conspiracy theorists since the financier’s 2019 death in federal custody. And now, the accuracy of Trump’s recent Truth Social assertion has come under scrutiny due to the reality of Congress and federal agencies having to navigate complex legal and privacy challenges regarding what records could be made public.

Amazon Prime refunds are going out after $2.5 billion settlement. Here's when your refund could arrive.

Amazon has started issuing payments to eligible Prime members as part of a $2.5 billion settlement over federal allegations that it misled customers.

The online retailer agreed to the payouts in September to resolve a 2023 Federal Trade Commission lawsuit that accused Amazon of misleading customers into enrolling in Prime and making it hard for them to cancel their membership.

Under the settlement, Amazon agreed to offer $1.5 billion in refunds to customers. However, the e-commerce company neither admitted nor denied the FTC's allegations. In a statement at the time, the company said that "Amazon and our executives have always followed the law."

Here's what to know about the Amazon refund, including how to determine if you qualify for the payment.

When are payments going out?

Amazon is issuing settlement refunds to eligible Prime Members, starting with automatic payments issued between Nov. 12 and Dec. 24 (see below for more details on how payments are being made).

U.S. Banks Shelve $20 Billion Bailout Plan for Argentina

Bankers are instead discussing a smaller, short-term facility to help Argentina make a roughly $4 billion debt payment in January

Nov 20 (Reuters) - A planned $20 billion bailout for Argentina from JPMorgan Chase (JPM.N), opens new tab, Bank of America (BAC.N), opens new tab and Citigroup (C.N), opens new tab has been shelved as bankers pivot instead to a smaller, short-term loan package, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing sources.

In October, the U.S. Treasury reached a $20 billion exchange-rate stabilization agreement with Argentina, to be paired with a bank-led debt facility for the same amount. The deal came just days ahead of a midterm election that was crucial for Argentina's libertarian president, Javier Milei.
