President Joe Biden announced Wednesday that the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, California, which handle 40 percent of US imports, would begin operating on a 24/7 basis, in an effort to expedite the movement of freight and overcome the supply chain crisis that threatens both the operation of US factories and the availability of goods for US consumers.
Biden was flanked by transportation and warehousing industry officials and leaders of the Teamsters and International Longshore and Warehouse Union, as well as the AFL-CIO when he made the announcement. The use of the White House symbolized the intervention by the federal government in the privately owned shipping and warehouse industries, which has no precedent except for the issuance of strikebreaking injunctions under the Taft-Hartley Act.
The ILWU contract provides for two eight-hour shifts daily, with voluntary two-hour overtime at the end of each shift, plus a five-hour“owl”shift each night, starting at3:00 a.m.All overtime work, as well as the “owl” shift and weekend work, is paid at premium rates, so employers have refused to schedule work at those times.

PORT OF LOS ANGELES STATEMENT ON CONTAINER SHIP FIRE
Nov. 21, 2025 - Units are responding to a fire below deck of the container ship “One Henry Hudson” berthed at Yusen Container Terminal at the Port of Los Angeles.
On scene are Los Angeles Fire Department, Long Beach Fire Department, Los Angeles Port Police, and U.S. Coast Guard.
A waterside safety zone around the ship has been established and the State Route 47 has been closed due to smoke and visibility concerns. No injuries have been reported and all crew members are accounted for.
Four of the Port’s seven container terminals have suspended operations.
Federal, City and Port officials are working cooperatively to extinguish the fire while monitoring local air quality. LAFD recommends local residents stay indoors with windows closed.

Emperor Haile Selassie (1892-1975), who was crowned ‘King of Kings’ in Addis Ababa in 1930, was believed in Ethiopia to have been chosen by God. The Rastafarians in Jamaica even ‘recognised’ him as their Messiah and God. A look at the dual ‘careers’ of a 20th-century figure who was as remarkable as he was controversial.
Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah and King of Kings of Ethiopia, Lord of Lords and Elect of God’ was the full title of Tafari Makonnen from 1930 onwards. Born in 1892 in the Ethiopian province of Harar, 37 years later he was to become the last throne holder of the dynasty that had ruled the Ethiopian empire for nearly 3,000 years. In Harar, his father, Ras Makonnen Woldemikael, held the office of governor. Tafari’s mother passed away when he was two years old.
After the death of his father the father’s cousin, Emperor Menelik II, who had no sons of his own, took the young Tafari to the imperial court in Addis Ababa to raise him. Years of family and palace intrigues followed, at the end of which, in1917, Tafari Makonnen was invested as Regent alongside the newly crowned Empress Zewditu, eldest daughter of Menelik II. However, Zewditu’s throne was on shaky ground from the start.

Christianity has been the state religion in Ethiopia – one of the oldest Christian countries in the world, along with Armenia and Georgia – since the middle of the 4th century AD. The Emperor, whose power was unrestricted, simultaneously held office as leader of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The Ethiopian emperors were established by the Solomonic dynasty from 1270 AD. Their right to rule is based on the national epic of Ethiopia, the ‘Kebra Negast’ (‘Glory of the Kings’), written in the late 13th century. The epic contains an account of the legendary Queen of Sheba, also referred to in the Old Testament, ruler of a vast kingdom stretching from southern Arabia to Ethiopia. After meeting the biblical King Solomon, leader of the Israelite tribe of Judah, she is said to have given birth to his son Menelik I back in her homeland. According to legend, as a young man Menelik visited his father in Jerusalem, where Solomon is said to have crowned him Ethiopia’s first emperor.
Haile Selassie’s immortality
However, the events of the mid-1970s did nothing to dent his veneration as God by the Rastafarians in Jamaica. Among the devout Rastas, his mortal death and controversial reputation caused not the slightest doubt as to Haile Selassie’s divinity. Rastafarianism still flourishes today, and is cultivated worldwide by its followers. Reggae, which has no lack of young talent, also confers immortality on Haile Selassie. Among the genre’s young stars is Jamaican musician Chronixx. Before his concert on the top floor of the Reitschule Bern in September 2014, his tour bus made a stop on the way from Zurich to Bern to visit the special exhibition ‘Playing host to an Emperor. Haile Selassie’s state visit in 1954’ at Jegenstorf Castle. The castle is a place of pilgrimage for Rastas from all over the world, as it served as Emperor Haile Selassie’s residence during his state visit from 25 to 28 November 1954.

The once-buzzy former Standard Hotel space in Downtown Los Angeles has new life this week. The 209-room building on Flower Street, once the headquarters of Superior Oil, spent years as a cool-kid hangout (complete with rooftop pool) and now will play host to a whole new generation of travelers and staycation locals under the name the Delphi Hotel. What’s more, the property has begun to roll out a suite of food and beverage areas, beginning first with a lobby-level lounge and bar serving breakfast, coffee, afternoon snacks, and evening cocktails. Future plans involve a diner built into the property, a new rooftop hangout near the pool (complete with a so-called “secret” garden), and more lobby-level dining and lounge areas including a private bar.
The new Crestline Hotels & Resorts property is just one in a handful of recent arrivals around Los Angeles, from the Hotel Per La (formerly the NoMad) not far away to the massive new Moxy and AC Hotels in the adjacent South Park areas. Meanwhile, over in Santa Monica, the revitalized Georgian hotel, which dates to 1933, now features several on-site restaurant and dining spaces, including a subterranean invite-only speakeasy. The lobby bar at the Delphi opens today, Friday, April 14.

Chandler's involvement extended to MC2 Model Management, founded by Jean-Luc Brunel, who himself was implicated as an Epstein co-conspirator and later met a mysterious end similar to Epstein’s—death in a prison cell ruled as suicide.
Chandler's professional engagements also included curating the lineup for Demna Gvsalia’s fall/winter show for Balenciaga in 2016, where she boasted of her role in suggesting models who were all accepted by the brand, hinting at her influential position in the industry
Additionally, Balenciaga's involvement in disturbing imagery, particularly involving children, has also been a topic of significant concern. The fashion brand has faced backlash for advertising campaigns for using inappropriate themes and props that could be interpreted as referencing child abuse.
