NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day

November 22, 2025

Dione and Rhea Ring Transit

Seen to the left of Saturn's banded planetary disk, small icy moons Dione and Rhea are caught passing in front of the gas giant's extensive ring system in this sharp telescopic snapshot. The remarkable image was recorded on November 20, when Saturn's rings were nearly edge-on when viewed from planet Earth. In fact, every 13 to 16 years the view from planet Earth aligns with Saturn's ring plane to produce a series of ring plane crossings. During a ring plane crossing, the interplanetary edge-on perspective makes the thin but otherwise bright rings seem to disappear. By November 23rd Saturn's rings will have reached a minimum angle for now, at their narrowest for viewing from planet Earth, but then start to widen again. Of course, Dione and Rhea orbit Saturn near the ring plane once every 2.7 and 4.5 days respectively, while the next series of Saturn ring plane crossings as seen from Earth will begin again in 2038.

3I/ATLAS: NASA Defends Its Fuzzy HiRISE Images As Amateurs Produce Sharper Views

22 November 2025, 11:34 AM GMT

NASA is defending its official, fuzzy images of Comet 3I/ATLAS captured by its powerful HiRISE camera, even as amateur astronomers are now releasing substantially sharper views of the mysterious object.

This unexpected comparison has ignited a debate over who is capturing the clearest cosmic portrait of the comet.

Enthusiasts had been waiting for high-resolution pictures of the third-ever interstellar visitor, exocomet 3I/ATLAS.

However, the highly anticipated NASA broadcast, which was meant to release these unseen images of the unusual object, unfortunately fell short of their expectations.

NASA's Blurred Photo: The Great Let-Down

Since the comet 3I/ATLAS was discovered on 1 July 2025 by the ATLAS observatory in Chile (the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System), it has caused confusion among experts and the general public.

The ATLAS system has identified many objects to date, including 1,293 Near-Earth Asteroids (NEAs), 112 potentially dangerous asteroids, 4,957 supernovas, and 110 comets.

It can detect asteroids as small as 20 metres. Even with all these findings, no discovery has been more puzzling than the comet 3I/ATLAS.

Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb has noted 12 unusual features of the object.

These puzzles include their path, their 'anti-tail' feature, a large amount of nickel present, and their potential starting place (the WOW! signal), among others.

Because of the government shutdown, the highly anticipated NASA information was postponed, so everyone had to wait.

The official images came from several NASA assets, including the HiRISE camera aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), the MAVEN mission (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN), the STEREO mission, SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory), as well as the Psyche and Lucy spacecraft.

People online are comparing these pictures with those taken by amateur astronomers on Earth, who have captured images that are noticeably more impressive.

Why NASA's Pictures Look Blurry

Amid growing disapproval, NASA used social media to address public concerns and explain its reasoning.

The agency pointed out that the results were to be expected, saying, 'Lots of reasons…but in short, it's not what these spacecraft were designed to do.

As comet 3I/ATLAS swooped by, we jumped on the opportunity to turn our instruments its way and see what we could get.'

NASA then used the HiRISE picture as a specific example. The image on the left (picture 1), they explained, shows what the camera was built to photograph: the bright, near, and stable Martian surface.

The picture on the right (picture 2), by contrast, is what the camera managed to capture of the faint, far-off, and quickly moving comet 3I/ATLAS.

NASA acknowledged that while it may not be suitable for a 'magazine cover', the image is still extremely valuable for research.

Defining 'Unsuccessful' Images

The contrast between NASA's official HiRISE images and the stunning photographs shared by amateur astronomers clearly shows two distinct goals at work.

While the agency admits its results are not picture-perfect, it maintains that the faint, blurry data is still crucial for scientific study and understanding the comet's unique features.

Ultimately, this situation forces us to question what makes a celestial image truly successful: breathtaking clarity or the hidden information that only official instruments can detect.

The debate over who secured the best shot of 3I/ATLAS continues.

Congress Asks NASA IG To Audit GSFC Actions

November 21, 2025

According to this press release Science Committee Democrats Request Inspector General Audit of Goddard Closures and Relocations:

“Today, Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) and Science Committee Democratic Members sent a letter to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Office of Inspector General (OIG) requesting a formal audit of the agency’s recent actions regarding widespread closures and relocations at the Goddard Space Flight Center including its main campus in Greenbelt, Maryland”. More below

“What is happening right now at Goddard is not prudent, thoughtful, in good faith, or rational. Goddard’s challenges are real, but we are hard pressed to see any justification suggesting a sudden crisis that requires drastic and chaotic intervention on a timeline of months, weeks, or days.

Yet that is what NASA claims in order to justify the actions of recent months, and the actions that apparently will continue for the foreseeable future,” the Members wrote in their letter.

“We believe an independent audit is necessary to determine the true impact of the recent – and ongoing – disruptions at Goddard,” the Members continued.

“Such an audit would greatly assist the Committee as it considers the steps that will be necessary to ensure Goddard continues to serve as a pillar of NASA science, engineering, and space flight, and a world-class research and development facility.”

The letter was signed by Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee Ranking Member Valerie Foushee (D-NC), Investigations and Oversight Subcommittee Ranking Member Emilia Sykes (D-OH), Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR), Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI), Rep. Deborah Ross (D-NC), Rep. Andrea Salinas (D-OR), Rep. Gabe Amo (D-RI), Rep. Suhas Subramanyam (D-VA), Rep. Luz Rivas (D-CA), Rep. Hubble Captures Puzzling Galaxy

Nov 21, 2025

This NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image features a galaxy that’s hard to categorize.

The galaxy in question is NGC 2775, which lies 67 million light-years away in the constellation Cancer (the Crab).

NGC 2775 sports a smooth, featureless center that is devoid of gas, resembling an elliptical galaxy. It also has a dusty ring with patchy star clusters, like a spiral galaxy.

Which is it: spiral or elliptical — or neither?

Because we can only view NGC 2775 from one angle, it’s difficult to say for sure.

Some researchers classify NGC 2775 as a spiral galaxy because of its feathery ring of stars and dust, while others classify it as a lenticular galaxy.

Lenticular galaxies have features common to both spiral and elliptical galaxies.

Astronomers aren’t certain of exactly how lenticular galaxies come to be, and they might form in a variety of ways.

Lenticular galaxies might be spiral galaxies that merged with other galaxies, or that have mostly run out of star-forming gas and lost their prominent spiral arms.

They also might have started out more like elliptical galaxies, then collected gas into a disk around them.

Some evidence suggests that NGC 2775 merged with other galaxies in the past. Invisible in this Hubble image, NGC 2775 has a tail of hydrogen gas that stretches almost 100,000 light-years around the galaxy.

This faint tail could be the remnant of one or more galaxies that wandered too close to NGC 2775 before being stretched apart and absorbed.

If NGC 2775 merged with other galaxies in the past, it could explain the galaxy’s strange appearance today.

Most astronomers classify NGC 2775 as a flocculent spiral galaxy. Flocculent spirals have poorly defined, discontinuous arms that are often described as “feathery” or as “tufts” of stars that loosely form spiral arms.

Hubble previously released an image of NGC 2775 in 2020. This new version adds observations of a specific wavelength of red light emitted by clouds of hydrogen gas surrounding massive young stars, visible as bright, pinkish clumps in the image.

This additional wavelength of light helps astronomers better define where new stars are forming in the galaxy.

China Achieves Thorium-uranium Nuclear Fuel Conversion in Molten-salt Reactor

Nov 04, 2025

China has successfully achieved the first-ever thorium to uranium nuclear fuel conversion in a Thorium Molten Salt Reactor (TMSR), and obtained valid experimental data following thorium fuel loading, confirming the technical feasibility of thorium utilization in a molten-salt reactor nuclear energy system, according to the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics (SINAP) on Saturday.

The experimental TMSR, which was built by SINAP in collaboration with other Chinese institutions, is currently the only operational molten-salt reactor in the world loaded with thorium fuel.

The realization of thorium-uranium conversion marks a milestone in TMSR development, providing core technical support and a feasible solution for China's large-scale development and utilization of thorium resources, and for the future progress of advanced nuclear energy systems.

Molten-salt reactors are fourth-generation advanced nuclear energy systems that use high-temperature molten salt as a coolant.

They boast inherent safety features, cool without water, run at atmospheric pressure, and deliver a high-temperature output.

These features mean the reactors are widely recognized as the most suitable type for thorium resource utilization in nuclear energy production.

This technological route aligns particularly well with China's abundant thorium reserves.

It also allows for deep integration with industries such as solar power, wind power, high-temperature molten-salt energy storage, high-temperature hydrogen production, coal chemical engineering and petrochemical engineering, facilitating the construction of a complementary, low-carbon, integrated energy system.

According to SINAP, the TMSR program was launched in 2011, achieving major progress from laboratory research to the engineering verification of core materials, equipment and technologies.

With domestically developed core equipment and an independent supply chain, China has established complete TMSR technology and industrial chains in basic terms.

SINAP said that it will work with leading energy companies to consolidate the TMSR industrial and supply chains, and accelerate technology iteration and engineering application.

The ultimate goal is to construct a 100-megawatt demonstration project and realize its demonstration application by 2035. (Xinhua)

A 'rampaging lion' nebula roars to life in a stunning deep-space photo

November 22, 2025

A nebula takes on the appearance of a rampaging lion in a new deep space vista captured by astrophotographer Ronald Brecher under a near-full moon from his home in Ontario, Canada, in October earlier this year.

The evocative scene captures the swirling gas of the nebula Sh2-132, known as the Lion Nebula, located around 10,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Cepheus, which you can find high above the northern horizon in the hours following sunset in November.

Within the nebula are two gigantic stars, each of which boasts a mass equivalent to 20 suns, the radiation from which has ionized and sculpted the vast cloud of interstellar dust and gas, causing it to glow with its own eerie light.

It took Brecher a little over 35 hours to capture the nebula using his Sky-Watcher Esprit 70 EDX refractor and astronomy camera, along with a host of peripherals and astronomy filters, each designed to capture a specific part of the light spectrum

Brecher used the same observational data to create two different, visually striking versions scene.

For one image, he opted to use the Hubble palette in the post-processing stage, which assigned a color to each of the specific wavelength bands of light collected by the astronomy filters to recreate the iconic look of images produced by the space telescope.

The Foraxx palette, meanwhile, adopts a more dynamic approach to interpreting and combining the light data, producing a richer, more dramatic color rendering

Relocation of US Space Command in the works

Sat, November 22, 2025 at 4:51 AM PST

The Pentagon announced on Friday that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth met with the U.S. Space Command Commander General Stephen Whiting to discuss the relocation of the entity.

President Trump announced in September that he would move U.S. Space Command headquarters from Colorado Springs, Colo. to Hunstville, Ala.

“Gen. Whiting presented current relocation courses of action on efforts to relocate personnel and mission capabilities,” Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said in a news release.

Rep. Jeff Crank (R-Colo.) represents Colorado Springs. He said he received assurances from the Trump administration the move won’t be as bad as he originally feared.

“It isn’t all of the operational components of Space Command. It’s just the headquarters staff,” Crank said. “About 1,000 people. Six hundred or so will be civilian jobs and 400 military positions.”

He said the rest of the staff will likely remain in Colorado Springs.

The Congressional Research Service said about 1,700 personnel are directly assigned to Space Command Headquarters.

In a statement, the U.S. Space Command said “we’re still in the early stages of this transition, specific information or precise numbers related to personnel or other logistical details are extremely limited.”

Crank added that he expects the Space Force — separate from U.S. Space Command — to add about 500 positions in Colorado Springs over the next couple of years.

“I think at the very least, it will be an offset of what’s happening,” the lawmaker added.

Read U.S. Space Command’s full statement:

On U.S. Space Command’s headquarters, we continue to carry out the President’s direction to relocate deliberately and responsibly.

As we’re still in the early stages of this transition, specific information or precise numbers related to personnel or other logistical details are extremely limited.

While we at U.S. Space Command will be moving to Huntsville, many other space organizations will maintain their presence and operations in Colorado’s Front Range, including Space Force organizations like the Combat Forces Command (formerly Space Operations Command).

These units, however, are distinct from U.S. Space Command. USSPACECOM is one of the Department’s 11 combatant commands, comprised of all branches of the military and responsible for protecting and defending the space domain.

The U.S. Space Force is a service like the U.S. Army or U.S. Air Force.

Drones attack energy facilities in Russia, Syzran Oil Refinery hit

22.11.2025 11:25

During the night of November 21–22, drones targeted fuel and energy facilities in Russia’s Samara region. Reports indicate that the Syzran Oil Refinery was struck.

According to Ukrinform, this was reported by the Russian service of the BBC, citing a statement from Vyacheslav Fedoryshchev, the Governor of the Samara region.

The regional head stated that the targets of the drone strikes were industrial enterprises in the Samara region and facilities of the fuel and energy sector.

He said that two people were killed and two others injured in the attack in the city of Syzran.

During the night, airports in Samara and several other Russian regions imposed flight restrictions. According to the report, the restrictions were lifted by Saturday morning.

The Telegram channel Astra, citing locals, wrote that drones attacked the Syzran Oil Refinery during the night before Saturday.

Additionally, Aleksandr Khinshtein, the governor of the Kursk region, reported a drone attack on a power substation in the city of Rylsk, which left approximately 3,000 customers without electricity.

He noted that as a result of the drone strike, two boiler houses went offline, adding that there were no casualties.

Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defence claimed that 69 drones were allegedly shot down during the night.

According to the defence agency of the aggressor state, 16 drones were allegedly downed over the Rostov region, 15 each over the Samara and Saratov regions, and 13 over the temporarily occupied Crimea.

The ministry also claimed that three drones were supposedly intercepted over each of the Volgograd and Kursk regions, two over the Voronezh region, and one each over the Belgorod and Bryansk regions.

As reported by Ukrinform, on November 20, regional authorities in Russia confirmed successful drone attacks in the Ryazan region, where an oil refinery is on fire, and in the Kursk region, where 16,000 customers were left without power after a strike on substations.

Hamas declares ceasefire over after IDF strikes Gazans

NOV 22, 2025 07:29

Tensions explode as Hamas declares the Gaza ceasefire dead, vowing “Gaza will not become Lebanon” while a senior commander lies killed in fresh Israeli strikes.

With Washington racing to contain the crisis, the fragile truce hangs by a thread on the brink of total collapse.

Saudi television network Al-Arabiya reported Saturday afternoon that Hamas has informed American mediators that it considers the ceasefire effectively over and is "prepared to resume fighting," citing ongoing Israeli military actions in Gaza.

According to the report, Hamas officials told the envoys: "Gaza will not become Lebanon" - a reference to Israel's continued strikes against Hezbollah targets despite the November 2024 ceasefire in Lebanon.

No official statement has been released by Hamas confirming the move.

A senior US official told the Israeli news site Walla that Hamas "has not yet walked away from the agreement" but warned it will no longer tolerate Israeli attacks.

The official acknowledged that Washington is aware of the Israeli operations and "fully understands Israel's need to defend its troops after they came under fire."

According to the report, Hamas representatives told the Americans: "We would rather fight and lose 1,000 than continue taking Israeli strikes while sitting idle."

In a separate development, Al-Arabiya cited sources claiming that a senior commander in Hamas's military wing, Abu Abdullah al-Khudaydi, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on a vehicle in Gaza City.

On the ground, the IDF reported eliminating an armed terrorist who crossed the designated "yellow line" in a jeep, opened fire on troops along a humanitarian corridor, and was neutralized.

Additional airstrikes killed four people in a vehicle in northern Gaza and eliminated several terrorists who emerged from a tunnel in Rafah or crossed restricted lines elsewhere in the Strip.

In the north, the Israeli Air Force carried out strikes on Hezbollah rocket launchers and military infrastructure in southern Lebanon and the Beqaa Valley.

Local authorities in northern Israel warned residents of possible explosion sounds but stressed there is no current threat to civilian areas.

EXCLUSIVE: One “last dying hope” to include UAPDA in this year’s NDAA, Burlison says

Nov 21, 2025

Rep. Eric Burlison (R-MO) — Member, Oversight Committee, Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets & Congressional UAP Caucus

Ask a Pol asks:

Do you know what happened with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s UAP Disclosure Act — or UAPDA — in this year’s National Defense Authorization Act or NDAA? It doesn’t seem like it was ever formally offered?

Key Burlison:

“I’m still trying to get it. There may be a last dying hope here,” Rep. Eric Burlison exclusively tells Ask a Pol. “But I have to move quickly. [HASC] Chairman [Mike] Rogers said if I can get the Four Corners* to agree to put it into the NDAA, then he’ll put it in.”

*Four Corners refers to the Chair and Ranking Members of both the House and Senate Armed Services and Intelligence Committees.

Caught our ear:

“It’s a lot of people I’m going to have to make phone calls directly to,” Burlison says. “Today. Today, probably.”
