Haile Selassie's body was discovered buried under a toilet in the palace where he was held captive after being deposed in 1974. His remains were exhumed in 1992 and, after being kept in a crypt, were finally given a dignified burial in 2000. The burial under the toilet was a humiliation orchestrated by the Mengistu regime, which had overthrown him.
Deposition and death: Haile Selassie was overthrown by a Soviet-backed military junta, the Derg, in 1974 and died in 1975 while under house arrest.
Discovery of remains: In 1992, after the fall of the Mengistu regime, his remains were found buried under the floorboards of a toilet in the Menilek Palace.
Exhumation and reburial: The remains were exhumed and placed in a glass-fronted box at the Ba'ata Mariam Church. A proper funeral was held on November 5, 2000, and he was finally laid to rest in a mausoleum at the church alongside his wife.
