BREAKING: More than 40 arrested after Newton County S.O. raids alleged dogfighting ring
Newton County, Tx — A Newton County Sheriff's Office investigation led to a Saturday night raid of an alleged dogfighting ring in the Call community off FM 1004 and the arrest of more than 40 people, according to information Newton County Sheriff Colton Havard provided to KFDM News.
Those charged with attending a dogfighting event face a Class A Misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail and/or a fine of up to $4,000.
The raid is the result of an ongoing investigation and more arrests are possible, according to Sheriff Havard. He says dogfighting and animal cruelty won't be tolerated in Newton County. Jasper County Sheriff Chuck Havard told us he's glad his department could assist.

WASHINGTON — ICE continues to arrest violent criminal illegal aliens as part of Operation Midway Blitz in Chicago, despite resistance from activists and sanctuary politicians like Gov. JB Pritzker and Mayor Brandon Johnson. The Department of Homeland Security is conducting Operation Midway Blitz in honor of Katie Abraham, who tragically lost her life to a drunk-driving criminal illegal alien in the sanctuary state of Illinois.
Of those arrested across Chicago on Nov. 19 alone, violent criminal illegal aliens include:
Angel Gonzalez Di Luca, a 27-year-old criminal illegal alien from Venezuela who’s been convicted of domestic violence with strangulation. He attempted to flee on foot, but ICE officials caught up and arrested him. He illegally entered the country at an unknown date and location, and he was released under the Biden administration’s catch and release polices and never reported to ICE.
Juan Toledo Vasquez, a 54-year-old criminal illegal alien from Mexico who’s been arrested for aggravated criminal sexual abuse against a child and possession of a fraudulent ID card. He’s been removed from the U.S. twice — once in 2000 and once in 2007.
Jose Juarez Soto, a 31-year-old criminal illegal alien from Mexico convicted of domestic battery and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon. He illegally entered the U.S. on an unknown date at an unknown location, and U.S. Border Patrol gave him a voluntary return to Mexico on March 4, 2010. He illegally reentered the country sometime after that date.
Hector Teja Solis, a 34-year-old criminal alien from Mexico convicted of armed robbery causing bodily injury. He illegally entered the U.S. on an unknown date at an unknown location.
Miguel Angel Portillo Pacheco, a 29-year-old criminal illegal alien from El Salvador who’s been convicted of domestic battery, assault, violating a protective order, armed robbery without a firearm and resisting a peace officer. He claims to have entered the U.S. illegally in 2009, and ICE encountered him in Illinois’ McHenry County Jail after his conviction; he served his sentence before his Nov. 19 ICE arrest.
Domingo Sanchez Hernandez, a 47-year-old criminal illegal alien from Mexico with a final order of removal who’s been convicted of DUI and arrested multiple times for domestic battery. An immigration judge ordered him removed from the U.S. on Aug. 12, 2024.
“These arrests are a drop in the bucket,” said ERO Chicago Field Office Director Sam Olson. “ICE Chicago is out doing targeted enforcement every day to protect people where their local leaders have failed, and we’ve arrested thousands of dangerous criminal aliens. Make no mistake: These are criminals, and if local officials had called ICE before releasing them, they’d be in their home countries rather than victimizing innocent people here in the United States.”

The Attorney General’s Double Standard: Weiser Warns of “Weaponization” While Ignoring His Own Political Luggage

When Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser sent his sharply worded letter to Governor Jared Polis urging him to block the Department of Justice’s attempt to transfer Tina Peters to federal custody, he framed his opposition as a stand for the rule of law. He warned of “political interference” by the Trump administration, argued that moving the former Mesa County Clerk would “circumvent Colorado’s criminal justice system,” and insisted that “no one is above the law.”
But Weiser’s letter overlooked an unavoidable reality: the Attorney General’s own record is marred by politically charged decision-making, ethically questionable episodes, and optics that undermine his claim to be a neutral defender of democratic institutions.
For an official now campaigning for governor from deep behind in the Democratic primary, the timing — and tone — of his letter raises an uncomfortable question:
Is Phil Weiser defending the integrity of Colorado’s justice system, or defending the power structure that benefits him politically?
This analysis examines what Weiser said, what he didn’t say, and why the message may be compromised by the messenger.
Weiser’s Warning to Polis-
Peters was convicted on state charges.
Her sentence is a matter of state authority.
Federal intervention would be a political intrusion into a state case.
In abstract legal theory, this is a defensible position. States generally retain control over individuals sentenced under state law, and the AG has the responsibility to protect that authority.
But that’s only the theory.
In practice, Weiser’s letter lands differently — because the context he pretended did not exist is precisely the context Colorado voters cannot ignore.
The Optics Problem: State Custody Equals State Control
What Weiser didn’t say is as important as what he did.
Keeping Peters in state custody means Colorado maintains total control over her conditions, restrictions, discipline, and communication. Segregation is possible. Limited access is possible. Tight monitoring is possible. Her public voice can be muted — intentionally or not.
A transfer to federal custody would remove Colorado’s administrative grip on its highest-profile dissident.
That shift matters in a case where:
The state executed an FBI-assisted raid over state charges.
The state prosecuted Peters aggressively while ignoring its own internal failures.
The state holds unilateral power over her daily treatment inside La Vista.
When the AG demands that the governor prevent federal custody while simultaneously claiming the moral high ground, readers can’t help but notice the unspoken subtext:
Colorado’s political establishment is comfortable keeping Peters exactly where she is — under Colorado’s control.
Selective Prosecution and Unequal Consequences
Weiser’s appeal to “equal justice” rings hollow when measured against the profound disparities already documented in Colorado’s election-security record.
Two facts — documented in public record and detailed in prior High Country Advocate reports — stand out:

The Password Scandal: 34 Counties Exposed, Zero Criminal Charges
In 2024, the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office unintentionally posted BIOS passwords for voting machines across 34 counties online for four months. This was an election-security breach orders of magnitude larger than anything Peters was accused of.
No SWAT-style raid.
No indictments.
No arrests.
No prosecution.
A staffer quietly left. That was it.

The Uncharged Actors in the Mesa County Case
Even in the Peters case itself:
The man who physically accessed the machines, Conan Hayes, was never charged.
The organizer who paid for his hotel room, Sherronna Bishop, was never charged.
Yet Peters — who maintains she was attempting to preserve system records before a software update — received nine years in prison.
Colorado’s top enforcement offices (including Weiser’s) labeled her a danger to election integrity while letting the central actors and state-level offenders walk away untouched.
Against that backdrop, Weiser’s warning that federal involvement could “undermine justice” is hard to take at face value.
Justice in Colorado has already been undermined — by the state’s own selective enforcement.
