The Observable Universe

How far can you see? Everything you can see, and everything you could possibly see, right now, assuming your eyes could detect all types of radiations around you – is the observable universe. In light, the farthest we can see comes from the cosmic microwave background, a time 13.8 billion years ago when the universe was opaque like thick fog. Some neutrinos and gravitational waves that surround us come from even farther out, but humanity does not yet have the technology to detect them. The featured image illustrates the observable universe on an increasingly compact scale, with the Earth and Sun at the center surrounded by our Solar System, nearby stars, nearby galaxies, distant galaxies, filaments of early matter, and the cosmic microwave background. Cosmologists typically assume that our observable universe is just the nearby part of a greater entity known as "the universe" where the same physics applies. However, there are several lines of popular but speculative reasoning that assert that even our universe is part of a greater multiverse where either different physical constants occur, different physical laws apply, higher dimensions operate, or slightly different-by-chance versions of our standard universe exist.

Anomalies of 3I/ATLAS, Organized by Likelihood

November 23, 2025

The time is ripe to summarize the anomalies of the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS in ascending order of likelihood.

Here is the list, split into three categories, along with the probability, P, associated with each item:

I. Major anomalies with no simple explanation:

  1. P=0.00004: The forecasted perijove distance of 3I/ATLAS during its encounter with Jupiter on March 16, 2026 is 53.445 (+/- 0.06) million kilometers, identical to Jupiter’s Hills radius, 53.502 million kilometers (see here).

This match was enabled by the non-gravitational acceleration that 3I/ATLAS displayed near perihelion. The rare coincidence might mean that 3I/ATLAS intends to release technological devices as artificial satellites of Jupiter, potentially at Jupiter’s Lagrange points L1 and L2.

  1. P=0.00005: The arrival time of 3I/ATLAS was fine-tuned to bring it within tens of millions of kilometers from Mars, Venus and Jupiter and be unobservable from Earth at perihelion (see here).

  2. P<0.001: The nucleus of 3I/ATLAS is roughly a million times more massive than 1I/`Oumuamua and a thousand times more massive than 2I/Borisov, while moving faster than both (see here and here).

There is not enough rocky material in interstellar space to deliver a rock of this mass once per decade to the inner solar system (see here).

This suggests that 3I/ATLAS may have targeted the inner solar system rather than was drawn at random from the reservoir of interstellar rocks.

  1. P<0.001: During July and August as well as through November of 2025, 3I/ATLAS displayed a sunward jet (anti-tail) that is not an optical illusion from geometric perspective, unlike thousands of known comets (see here).

The HiRISE image taken at closest approach of 3I/ATLAS to Mars, confirmed a glowing extension ahead of 3I/ATLAS along the direction of motion (see here).

For a technological object, a beam of light or particles might be used to mitigate the risk from micrometeorites or rocks that could impact its surface at a relative speed of order 60 kilometers per second and release a thousand times more energy per unit mass than explosives.

  1. P<0.001: The gas plume surrounding 3I/ATLAS contains much more nickel than iron as found in industrially-produced nickel alloys, and a nickel to cyanide ratio that is orders of magnitude larger than for thousands of known comets, including 2I/Borisov (see here).

This might indicate an artificial origin of these unusual abundances.

  1. P=0.002: The retrograde trajectory of 3I/ATLAS is aligned to within 5 degrees with the ecliptic plane of the planets around the Sun (see here). This suggests that the trajectory may have been designed.

>>23892467

II. Medium anomalies, which could be a statistical fluke:

  1. P=0.006: 3I/ATLAS arrived from a direction coincident with the radio “Wow! Signal” to within 9 degrees (see here).

  2. P<0.01: 3I/ATLAS shows extreme negative polarization, unprecedented for all known comets, including 2I/Borisov (see here). This unusual polarization may be related to its unusual anti-tail.

III. Minor anomalies, which could potentially be explained by a unique origin:

  1. P<0.1: The gas plume surrounding 3I/ATLAS contains only 4% water by mass, a dominant constituent of familiar solar-system comets (see here).

The plume might have resulted from the sunlight releasing the ices and dust that accumulated on the surface of a technological object during its journey through the cold interstellar medium.

  1. P<0.1: Near perihelion, 3I/ATLAS brightened faster than any known comet and was bluer than the Sun (see here). This might be a signature that its engine turned on.

  2. P<0.1: 3I/ATLAS exhibits sunward and anti-solar jets which require an unreasonably large surface area for a natural comet in order to absorb enough sunlight needed to sublimate enough ice to feed the mass flux of these jets (as calculated here). The jets might originate from technological thrusters.

  3. P<0.1: The tightly-collimated jets from 3I/ATLAS maintain orientation across a million kilometers in multiple directions relative to the Sun despite its measured rotation. The jets might originate from technological thrusters.

  4. P<0.1: Near perihelion 3I/ATLAS exhibits non-gravitational acceleration which requires massive evaporation for a natural comet (as calculated here), whereas preliminary images indicate that the object maintained its integrity and did not break up (as discussed here). Instead, the acceleration might have been produced by an engine.

***

The probability for the combined occurrence of multiple independent anomalies is the product of their individual probabilities.

From the above list, it is apparent that 3I/ATLAS is an extremely rare and mysterious object, especially if it happens to be a natural comet as argued by NASA officials at the press conference on November 19, 2025 (accessible here).

Regarding the updated ranking of 3I/ATLAS on the Loeb Scale (as defined here and here), I would prefer to wait for the flood of new data in the coming weeks before revising my previous value.

In an interview on NewsNation last night (accessible here), the brilliant Natasha Zouves asked me what data am I most looking for in the coming weeks.

I explained that a spectroscopic measurement of the speed and composition of the jets of 3I/ATLAS would reveal whether they stem from the sublimation of pockets of ice on the surface of a rock or from technological thrusters.

China Just One-Upped NASA in Outer Space

November 23, 2025

After suffering an emergency in space, it took NASA nine months to rescue its stranded astronauts. China took nine days. China continues its long march toward space dominance.

On the heels of now iconic images of Chinese taikonauts on China’s modular space station barbequing meat in orbit on the eve of their triumphal return to Earth, news broke that their return vehicle was damaged.

It appears that space debris crashed into their craft right before the taikonauts were set to board that craft and return to Earth.

The Chinese Crew Made It Home Safely

Because of this suspected damage, the crew stayed in orbit, running various risk assessments and impact analyses to ensure the station’s continued structural integrity.

Some speculated that if it was found that their re-entry vehicle had suffered damage, Beijing might turn to America, notably SpaceX, to assist them in returning the stranded taikonauts.

But that was not the case. Instead, the Chinese relied upon the Shenzhou-21 vehicle, which had already docked at the station and was meant to support the succeeding Chinese manned mission to the station.

Nine days after they were originally supposed to return home, the three-person crew of taikonauts made it safely to Earth—having spent 204 days in orbit, a record for a Chinese crew.

Remember That Time Americans Were Stranded on the ISS?

It’s a stunning comparison with the shambolic, almost Soviet-like nature of America’s ailing manned spaceflight program.

Remember that in 2024, the crew of Boeing’s new prototype, the Starliner capsule, were supposed to fly into orbit, dock with the International Space Station (ISS), and then return home quickly.

Unfortunately for the American crew, the Starliner capsule was deemed unsafe for the crew to return home in—stranding them on the ISS in orbit for nine months, with no viable return plan.

In the months that followed, the Americans from the Starliner mission broke some records of their own, none of them good.

The United States, which on paper is the world’s dominant space power, could not muster up the capability to get a return mission up and running.

A combination of bureaucratic inertia, political obstruction due to animosity between the Biden administration and Elon Musk, and overall incompetence led to the failure to rescue the Americans stranded on the ISS sooner.

Compare that to the Chinese experience, which in many respects was far more caustic.

After having been damaged in a bizarre space junk incident (it is still unclear what precisely hit the Chinese Shenzhou-20 return capsule), the Chinese taikonauts made it home just nine days after they were supposed to.

Beijing found a reliable workaround, and it did not allow for anything to slow it down in returning its people to the Earth’s surface.

That’s just the opposite of what happened when those Starliner passengers were stranded on the ISS: no one in Washington could have been bothered to bring them home sooner.

China’s Space Program Can Get Things Done—America’s Can’t

What’s more, the incident with the Chinese return capsule underscores the growing risk posed by space debris, even for well-controlled orbital missions.

The Chinese space agency, CMSA (China Manned Space Agency), had plans and standby vehicles in place—such as a spacecraft in near-readiness to act as a lifeboat.

But the Chinese upstaged the Americans (again) in the critical domain of manned spaceflight operations. What could have very easily been an epic disaster in orbit became a minor inconvenience.

The Americans were quietly chuckling after news broke that the Chinese were stuck in orbit. It was obviously a reaction to the humiliating way Washington handled a similar crisis more than a year ago.

Now it is the Chinese who are laughing at the Americans because of how easy they made the fix look. This does not bode well for the new space race that is shaping up between primarily America and China.

NASA's Research Balloons Discovered A Strange Anomaly In The Antarctic

Nov. 22, 2025 11:17 am EST

A project from NASA to study the Antarctic found strange radio waves that could not be traced back to an obvious source.

Though that project took place between 2016 and 2018, still today the radio waves defy any confirmed explanation.

This mystery drove a team of international researchers to do a deep dive into the project to try to find out what was going on.

NASA's project was called Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna, or ANITA, and it was a series of instruments carried on a balloon.

The purpose was to travel over the Antarctic ice (though it wasn't always ice, Antarctica may have once been a jungle) and study cosmic rays within Earth's atmosphere.

ANITA was built to specifically detect the radio waves that result from cosmic activity, however, certain radio waves picked up defied a clear explanation.

These waves had an upward trajectory, as if coming from beneath the ice, and were not what the scientists expected to find.

Now, a research team has picked up where ANITA left off. Utilizing the Pierre Auger Observatory, they searched data from 2004 to 2018 for events that might look like these unusual ANITA signals.

They were only able to find one such event, and though possible theories have been proposed, the strongest one involves upward-moving cosmic particle showers.

Their research was published in Physical Review Letters in 2025 under the title "Search for the Anomalous Events Detected by ANITA Using the Pierre Auger Observatory".

The research done into the Antarctic anomaly

The Pierre Auger Observatory is the world's biggest cosmic-ray detector — and cosmic rays may even be the key to life on Mars.

It uses two main systems: water tanks on the ground that detect particle showers when they hit Earth, and special telescopes that watch for faint light in the atmosphere as these showers pass through.

Normally, cosmic-ray showers come downward from space and can be tracked using both systems together. However, the upward-going showers being studied from ANITA would not trigger the ground detectors. To help resolve this mystery, the researchers relied only on the telescopic data.

The research team ran millions of large computer simulations of both normal cosmic-ray showers and the upward-going showers they theorized could be behind the ANITA anomaly.

This gave the researchers a realistic dataset to help them tell true upward-going events from misidentified ones.

Through various trials, the research team worked to rule out errors, test variations, and try to come to a clear conclusion of what was found. Despite all this, there was only one other ANITA-like event found.

This big mismatch informed the researchers that the ANITA anomalies cannot be easily explained as upward-going showers, so more work will need to be done.

What future research could be done into the Antarctic anomaly

Though no answers were found, the research team is going to continue to push forward. They are working on another balloon project like ANITA, as well as a new detector meant to specialize in finding cosmic particle signals.

With these being targeted research centered around the past anomaly, they could potentially help to clarify what was found.

For now, the researchers can only speculate that what ANITA found was a strange cosmic radio wave effect that we don't fully understand at this time. However, the team believes with more technology and more research, the source of the strange event will become clear.

This research, and others like it, remind us that our universe and even our own planet still has many mysteries to uncover. The Antarctic itself still defies our expectations, with scientists finding a living world underneath Antarctica where it was assumed nothing thrived.

It will be interesting to see what the team's new research uncovers in the future about this strange Antarctic anomaly.
