It is hard to explain why the bloc keeps funneling money to Kiev despite all the scandals, the Russian foreign minister has said

People in the EU could be benefitting from corruption in Ukraine, otherwise it’s difficult to explain the bloc’s determination to continue funding Kiev despite repeated graft and embezzling scandals, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview published on Tuesday.

Brussels is seeking to “scrape” together €135 billion ($156 billion) to prop up Kiev through 2026 and 2027 either through direct money transfer from the member states’ budgets, joint borrowing or seizing frozen Russian assets. Moscow has repeatedly warned that the third option would essentially amount to theft of its sovereign funds.

“It was recently discovered that yet another $100 million were spent on bribes to the corrupt officials,” Lavrov told the French-Russian dialogue association. “Did anyone from the Brussels bureaucrats or from those nations that pump Ukraine full of money explain it to their taxpayers that they have to endure and suffer? Maybe, there are some beneficiaries as well. I rule out nothing.”

The EU has not changed its plans even in light of a recent major graft scandal that rocked Ukraine. Earlier this month, Ukraine’s anti-corruption bodies revealed that a close associate and a former long-time business partner of Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky ran a $100 million kickback scheme in the energy sector, which heavily depends on Western aid.

Just a day after news of the scandal broke, Germany announced that it would provide Ukraine with an additional €40 million ($46.22 million) to support its energy industry that was at the center of the controversy.

It was not the first high-profile corruption scandal in Ukraine. In 2023, then Defense Minister Aleksey Reznikov resigned after local media exposed inflated food procurement contracts at his ministry. In 2024, the State Audit Service found large-scale violations in reconstruction projects financed by Western aid.

Moscow warned in the wake of the latest scandal that a “many-headed bloody hydra” of Ukrainian corruption was stretching beyond the national borders and draining Western taxpayers’ money.

EU Approves €1.5BN Plan To Build Up Ukraine's Military-Industrial Sector

Even as the Trump-backed Ukraine peace plan is said to be advancing as negotiations intensify ahead of a Washington-imposed deadline of Thursday, the European Union continues its efforts to ramp up support to Ukraine's defense sector.

On Tuesday European Parliament voted to approve a 1.5 billion euros ($1.7bn) program which seeks to deepen integration between Ukraine and Europe on military-industrial relations.

"We shall be powerful geopolitically if we shall be strong in our defense, and we shall be strong in defense if we shall be strong in our defense industry, and if we shall be strong in our defense industry, we shall be industrially independent, autonomous and much less fragmented," EU Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius said just ahead of the vote.

Anticipating a Trump withdrawal of large-scale arms support to Ukraine's military, the Zelensky government has been striving to augment support from Europe in order to establish domestic military production and capabilities.

But one of Moscow's key rationales for the 'special military operation' in the first place has been the expansion of NATO military infrastructure in Ukraine.

Russia views such EU projects as to sponsor Ukraine's defense industrial base as yet a continuation of this same problem.

If Ukraine keeps getting armed to the teeth, whether from outside or its own European-assisted defense production base, this could just perpetuation a major issue which keeps Russia and Ukraine fighting. This sets up for future war to be renewed, even if some kind of ceasefire is reached in the interim.

Gaming Platform Used by Nearly 36 Million Kids Rolls Out Mandatory Facial Recognition

Roblox is rolling out a new system to verify users’ age by analyzing images of their faces. The company said it will protect children, but critics cited concerns about privacy and data collection.

The popular online gaming platform Roblox is rolling out a new system to verify users’ age by analyzing images of their faces, The Associated Press reported.

The change comes amid mounting pressure on the platform to protect child safety. The company has faced lawsuits for not protecting children from predatory behavior by adults, and many countries and U.S. states have begun passing age verification laws and other regulations for social media use by children and teens.

Roblox is a massive gaming platform that claims 88.9 million active daily users and over 1 billion users worldwide. Nearly 40% of those users are 13 years old or younger.

The platform hosts viral games used by kids and teens, including Grow a Garden and Steal a Brainrot.

Under the new system, users who want to access the platform’s chat feature must go through a “Facial Age Estimation” process in the Roblox app using their device’s camera. Persona, a third-party vendor, processes the age-check images and video. Roblex said the images for verification are deleted after they are processed.

Once verified, users are placed into one of six age groups: under age 9, 9-12, 13-15, 16-17, 18-20, and 21 or older. Chat access is restricted so users can communicate only with others in the same or adjacent age brackets. For example, a 12-year-old may chat only with users 15 or younger, and an 18-year-old can chat with users 16 and older.

“We see it as a way for our users to have more trust in who the other people they are talking with are in these games,” said Roblox Chief Safety Officer Matt Kaufman, The Guardian reported. “And so we see it as a real opportunity to build confidence in the platform and build confidence amongst our users.”

Kaufman also said that between the ages of about 5 and 25, the system can accurately estimate a person’s age within one or two years. When the software fails, people can correct their age using a state-issued ID or parental controls. Age identification will be required for all users, not just children, once the global mandatory phase begins.

Israel wasted 2.6 million tons of food in 2024, worth $7.2 billion

“In Israel, where food expenditure is relatively high compared internationally, food loss constitutes one of the components affecting the cost of living,” the report said.

Israel generated 2.6 million tons of food waste in 2024, valued at roughly $7.2 billion, according to a comprehensive national food loss report released Tuesday.

The annual report, prepared by Leket Israel, revealed that roughly 39 percent of Israel’s domestically produced food goes to waste across the supply chain, from agricultural production through consumer households. Of this massive loss, more than 1.2 million tons worth NIS 9.9 billion ($3 billion) could have been rescued and consumed safely.

Leket is Israel’s national food bank, which rescues surplus edible food from farms, businesses, and kitchens and distributes it to the needy. It works in cooperation with the Ministries of Health and Environmental Protection.

“In Israel, where food expenditure is relatively high compared internationally, food loss constitutes one of the components affecting the cost of living,” the report said, noting that food insecurity in Israel “is among the most severe in the world,” citing UN Food and Agriculture Organization data.

The scale of waste carries enormous implications for a country already struggling with severe food insecurity. According to the report’s analysis of National Insurance Institute data, approximately 485,000 Israeli households currently live in conditions of food insecurity, representing 16.2 percent of all households. Israel ranks among the highest rates of food insecurity in the developed world, despite being an economically advanced nation.

For now, Canada still classifies cloned “meat” as a “novel food” requiring pre-market safety assessment.

Canadian officials insist no cloned “meat” or “dairy” has been approved there.

However, the scandal has drawn attention to the flood of cloned “meat” in the global food supply.

Astonishingly, the United States already allows cloned “beef” and “pork” to circulate freely, with zero labeling requirements and no warnings for consumers.

Under rules quietly implemented during the late 2000s and never revisited, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) insists cloned “meat” is “safe and nutritious.”

The FDA has stood by the claim, despite the European Union’s outright ban due to concerns over animal welfare, genetic instability, and unresolved long-term health risks.

Consumer groups say Americans are being kept in the dark on purpose.

The Center for Food Safety blasted the U.S. system for denying people the basic right to know what they’re eating:

“Massive public opposition to animal cloning, widespread scientific concerns about the risks of eating food from clones, and troubling animal cruelty and ethical concerns associated with the cloning process.”

But despite that, cloned meat is already here, and it’s unlabeled.

'You could incur 16 violations for prostitution and sexual solicitation, and upon the 17th violation, your account would be suspended,' Jayakumar reportedly testified, adding that 'by any measure across the industry, [it was] a very, very high strike threshold.' The plaintiffs claim that this testimony is corroborated by internal company documentation.

According to the brief, the company failed to disclose these harms to the public or to Congress, and refused to implement safety fixes that could have protected young users.

'Meta has designed social media products and platforms that it is aware are addictive to kids, and they're aware that those addictions lead to a whole host of serious mental health issues,' says Previn Warren, the co-lead attorney for the plaintiffs in the case. 'Like tobacco, this is a situation where there are dangerous products that were marketed to kids,' Warren adds. 'They did it anyway, because more usage meant more profits for the company.'

This lawsuit sheds more light on what happened last year on Capitol Hill when lawmakers grilled Facebook founder and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. During questioning, Zuckerberg actually stood up and apologized to those who have been victimized on his sites.

An internal 2022 audit allegedly found that Instagram's Accounts You May Follow feature recommended 1.4 million potentially inappropriate adults to teenage users in a single day. By 2023, according to the plaintiffs, Meta knew that they were recommending minors to potentially suspicious adults and vice versa.

Meta is not the only company being sued by the coalition of 1,800+ plaintiffs. YouTube, Snapchat, and TikTok are also in the crosshairs.

The lawsuit has been making its way through the courts for years, but a request for additional documentation by TIME was denied as the case is still being largely kept under wraps.

The fact that it has so much evidence and the backing of so many plaintiffs - from students to parents to activists to state attorneys general - may explain why social media companies have seemed so mellow as of late.
