Matt Van Epps is a Republican candidate running for Tennessee's 7th Congressional District in a special election to succeed former U.S. Representative Mark Green, who resigned in June 2025.
A West Point graduate and decorated combat helicopter pilot, Van Epps served nine tours in Afghanistan and Iraq during a 10-year active-duty military career and is now a lieutenant colonel in the Tennessee Army National Guard.
He previously held key state government roles, including Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of General Services and Deputy Chief Operating Officer in Governor Bill Lee’s administration, where he contributed to the state’s COVID-19 response.
Van Epps won the Republican primary on October 7, 2025, securing the endorsement of President Donald Trump, former Representative Mark Green, and Governor Bill Lee, and is now facing Democratic nominee Aftyn Behn in the general election scheduled for December 2, 2025.
