Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected Western claims that Russia plans to attack European countries, saying Moscow is prepared to formalize this in a written security guarantee.

EU leaders are inflating the “Russian threat” for domestic political gain and in the interests of their defense industries, Putin told a press conference on Thursday, following his visit to Kyrgyzstan.

“To say that Russia is planning to attack Europe – for us, that sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it? We’ve never planned anything like that,” he noted. “But if they want to hear it from us, well, fine, we will write that down, no problem.”

The Russian president suggested that European leaders might be “trying to create an illusion for their populations” or “catering to defense companies.”

Noting that such ideas are “hyped up in the Western public consciousness,” Putin added that if Europe wants a formal reassurance that Russia has no aggressive plans, “then we’d be willing to do this.”

DC National Guard Shooter Worked for CIA-Backed Kandahar Strike Group in Afghanistan

The suspect in the shooting of two National Guard members in Washington, DC, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, worked for a CIA-backed “Zero Unit” known as the Kandahar Strike Force (KSF) or the “03” unit, which has been implicated in war crimes against Afghan civilians.

Lakanwal, 29, arrived in the US in September 2021 as part of a program called “Operation Allies Welcome,” which brought tens of thousands of Afghan nationals into the US during and after the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, mainly people who worked with the US against the Taliban.

Lakanwal was granted asylum by the Trump administration earlier this year. His cooperation with the CIA has been confirmed by the spy agency’s director, John Ratcliffe, who said Lakanwal worked “with the US Government, including CIA, as a member of a partner force in Kandahar.”

The Zero Units worked under the National Directorate of Security (NDS), an intelligence service in the now-defunct US-backed Afghan government, formally known as the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.

A former Afghan general under the previous US-backed government told CBS News that the “03 unit, also known as The Kandahar Strike Force, was under the special forces directorate of NDS. They were the most active and professional forces, trained and equipped by the CIA. All their operations were conducted under the CIA command.”

Human Rights Watch (HRW) reported in 2019 that Afghan members of the Zero Units “have been responsible for extrajudicial executions and enforced disappearances, indiscriminate airstrikes, attacks on medical facilities, and other violations of international humanitarian law, or the laws of war.”

HRW said that it documented Afghan special forces raids on medical facilities that were carried out by the KSF and two other Zero Units between May 2018 and July 2019. “During these kill-or-capture operations, the forces involved assaulted and, in some cases, killed medical staff; assaulted or killed accompanying civilian or noncombatant caregivers; and caused damage to the facilities,” HRW said.

A relative of Lakanwal told NBC News that he grew up in Afghanistan’s Khost province and was living in Bellingham, Washington, with his wife and five children before the shooting.

The two National Guard members were shot in the head, and they remain in critical condition. They have been identified as Sarah Beckstrom, 20, and Andrew Wolfe, 24, from the West Virginia National Guard.

Eating a specific type of sweetener could raise your risk of suffering from liver disease, a study suggests.

Scientists found that sorbitol, a sugar alcohol used as a sugar substitute added to some diet sodas, sugar-free gums, low-sugar candy, ice cream and desserts, as well as some low-calorie fruit drinks, could raise the risk of fatty liver disease.

Suffered by nearly 100 million Americans, fatty liver disease is a condition in which dangerous fat builds up in the liver, triggering inflammation, scarring and even liver failure.

Researchers at Washington University in St Louis found in tests on zebrafish that sorbitol, used as a sugar substitute because it is much lower in calories, was naturally produced in the gut when glucose levels were high but was usually cleared by healthy gut bacteria.

When those bacteria were removed, which commonly occurs in humans who take certain medications, however, the sorbitol traveled to the liver, where it accelerated fat build-up. This happened because the sorbitol was converted into fructose, which was then converted into fat.

The scientists wrote in their research paper: 'Together, these findings show that sorbitol-degrading bacteria in the gut protect against [fatty] liver disease.

'It suggests that excessive intake of dietary sorbitol may pose a risk for the development of [fatty liver disease].'

The tests were carried out in fish and will need to be repeated in humans to confirm the results, although the researchers said it was a clear warning about the risks posed by sorbitol.

Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol found naturally in fruits like apples and peaches, but is also manufactured for use as a low-calorie sweetener.

Fatty liver disease can be caused by being overweight or obese, resistance to insulin, being diabetic or having high levels of fat in the blood.

It does not always cause symptoms, and doctors say the majority of cases are undiagnosed. Some warning signs can include abdominal pain, a feeling of fullness, extreme exhaustion or weakness.

Other symptoms include nausea, loss of appetite, unexplained weight loss, yellowish skin and whites of the eyes, swelling in the abdomen, legs, feet or hands.

Without treatment, the condition can progress to scarring of the liver, which can then cause liver failure, although it can take years to reach this state.

To treat the condition, patients may be prescribed medications, told to lose weight or advised to avoid alcohol.

In severe cases, a liver transplant may be needed.

In the study, published in Science Signaling, the researchers found that sorbitol could be made in the gut naturally by an enzyme that was activated whenever glucose, sugar levels, were too high.

Normally, they said, it was neutralized by Aeromonas bacteria, which is found in Zebrafish and in humans only when it is causing an infection - it is not part of the natural human microbiome, although the researchers said other bacteria could fulfil the same role.

It was not clear how much sorbitol someone might need to consume to raise their risk of fatty liver disease, or how much sorbitol can be safely neutralized by the microbiome.

Campbell's FIRES executive secretly recorded saying its soups are full of 'bioengineered meat' and made for 'poor people'

Campbell's Soup has fired the executive caught in a secret recording insulting customers and claiming the company's products were filled with bioengineered meat.

Vice President and Chief Information Security Officer Martin Bally was originally placed on administrative leave after a lawsuit against Campbell's was filed last week and the audio recording was released.

In the audio, a speaker identified as Bally was heard saying: 'We have st for fking poor people. Who buys our st? I don't buy Campbell's products barely anymore. It's not healthy now that I know what the f*'s in it.'

The voice, alleged to be Bally, also claimed that the chicken used in the brand's soups 'came from a 3D printer.'

Campbell's revealed on Wednesday that their investigation concluded that the voice on the secret recording was Bally and the executive was removed from the company on Tuesday.

'The comments were vulgar, offensive and false, and we apologize for the hurt they have caused,' the company said in a statement.

'This behavior does not reflect our values and the culture of our company, and we will not tolerate that kind of language under any circumstances.'

The recording went public after former Campbell's employee Robert Garza filed a lawsuit for wrongful termination and retaliation after he reported the offensive and racist remarks allegedly made by Bally in 2024.

The IDF and the Israeli police said that they will investigate an incident in which Israeli forces shot at two wanted Palestinian terrorists after they appeared to surrender during operations in Jenin on Thursday.

Israeli Border Police stated that they identified the building in which the terrorists were hiding and initiated an hours-long attempt to convince the two men to exit the building. When the terrorists refused to exit, Israeli forces used a backhoe to partially open the building's garage door.

Video footage released by a Ramallah-based Quds Network shows two Palestinian men emerging from the dark, half-opened garage entrance in front of a number of Israeli Border Police officers.

The Palestinian men raised their hands and lifted their shirts to reveal that they were unarmed while kneeling on the ground before attempting to re-enter the building.

The video then shows the two men being shot by officers.

This incident occured as Israeli Border Police personnel were operating in the Jenin area of the northern West Bank, with Israeli Air Force combat helicopters providing support to Commando Brigade forces on the ground, on Thursday afternoon.

The military noted that the Border Police activities, under the command of the Menashe Brigade, are part of ongoing West Bank counterterrorism efforts.

The commencement of the “broad counterterrorism operation” in the northern West Bank was announced by the military and the Shin Bet on Wednesday.

The Khor Mor gas field, one of the largest in the northern Iraqi semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan, came under attack late on November 26, with a halt in production and power cuts reported later.

Teams from both ministries are currently coordinating with Dana Gas to monitor the situation and mitigate the impact, the statement added.

Separately, the Iraqi Joint Operations Command (JOC) said in a statement that the attack constitutes a “dangerous terrorist act” aimed at “hindering and delaying efforts seeking to consolidate security and economic stability.”

The command also warned that the action poses a “direct threat to the interests of Iraqis” and would negatively impact the electricity system, particularly in Erbil and Sulaymaniyah provinces, promising firm legal action against all those involved in the “cowardly act.”

Despite these efforts, talks on a security agreement reached a dead end earlier this month, according to Hebrew media. Syria demanded a withdrawal from the buffer zone, and Israel rejected.

The first sign of growing hostility towards Syria in Israel came on November 21, when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the Security Cabinet that Syria’s Interim President Ahmed al-Shaara has been acting irrationally ever since returning from his meeting with Trump a week earlier.

“Syrian President Shaara has started doing all sorts of things since the meeting with Trump in Washington,” Netanyahu said. “He came back inflated.”

The Israeli army is launching a large-scale military operation in the northern West Bank, claiming it aims to prevent the regrouping of armed resistance groups in the Tubas district. But the real reason may be related to settlement expansion.

The Israeli army announced that it was launching a military operation in the northern West Bank, concentrating on a handful of villages and towns outside of the city of Tubas. Israeli forces moved into the Tubas governorate on Wednesday, deploying units from the Menashe, Shomron, and Commando Brigades.

The Israeli army said on X that it aims to “reinforce control over the area” as part of broader operations in the northern West Bank, claiming that the Tubas operation is intended to prevent the reformation of armed resistance groups in the governorate.

But local sources tell Mondoweiss this is just a pretext. The real reason for the wide-ranging mobilization of military forces is to lay the groundwork for confiscating large swathes of land for an upcoming settlement project.

Here’s what you need to know.

Towns and villages under siege

The operation, which began shortly after midnight, placed Tubas and the surrounding towns of Tammun, Aqaba, Tayasir, and Wadi al-Fara under siege. Hours earlier, Israeli forces stormed wide areas of the governorate, including the nearby villages of al-Badhan and Talluza, isolating Tubas with roadblocks, earth mounds, and checkpoints.

Soldiers entered with additional troops, bulldozers, and Apache helicopters, which opened fire toward residential areas, according to Tubas mayor Mahmoud Daraghmeh, who told Mondoweiss that this is the first time since the Second Intifada that helicopters have been used in Tubas.

Daraghmeh said the operation, set to continue for several days, began with coordinated incursions and house-to-house raids across the city and surrounding towns.

In Tammun, soldiers damaged infrastructure and cut electricity and water to several streets. According to local reports, Israeli forces converted multiple homes into military bases, expelled the families that resided within them, and ordered them not to return for several days. The army also detained more than 22 young men and conducted field interrogations with them. By about 8 p.m. local time, the Israeli army had detained over 73 people.

Ahmad Assad, governor of Tubas and the Northern Jordan Valley, told Mondoweiss that Israeli forces have imposed a full curfew, restricted the movement of ambulances and medical crews, and blocked access to patients needing urgent care.

This was corroborated by a statement from the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) later in the day, reporting 10 injuries from “severe beatings.” Four of them were hospitalized, while the remaining six were treated in the field.

The organization added that its crews have faced continuous obstruction from Israel forces in Tubas and Tammun since dawn, and that its teams transported 30 medical cases to the hospital, including 20 kidney dialysis patients and one deceased person.

Former Mossad director Yossi Cohen said at a conference that was closed off to the public that the intelligence agency has special units deployed and working "inside Iran itself."

"[Iran] is not a place where we work by proxy," he said at the conference held a few days ago, referring to locals acting remotely at Israel's direction. Cohen explained the goals of the agency's work as "going in to recruit and to obtain intelligence."

In recordings of Cohen's remarks that Haaretz has obtained, he also commented on the attacks in June by the United States and Israel during the 12-day war that Israel and Iran fought. The remarks hint that it's possible that not all of Iran's uranium stockpile was destroyed.

"President [Donald] Trump spoke of the destruction [of uranium stockpiles]. I say if not total destruction, then at least a very large amount." Cohen assessed that Iran is holding onto a cache of enriched uranium. "The Iranian regime hasn't given up on its nuclear aspirations."

The former Mossad director also commented on the process of normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia, which began during his term as Mossad chief. He claimed that he met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman several times and said that from Saudi Arabia's standpoint, a "peace agreement with Israel is possible, including how to gloss over the Palestinian issue."

Cohen said the thought Crown Prince Mohammed could get a decision passed on a peace agreement that would be acceptable to the Saudi public. Such an agreement, he said, would enable Israel to continue to consider the Palestinian issue after the signing of the agreement, as the United Arab Emirates did.

Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a deal for the sale of F-35 fighter jets to the Saudis. Cohen had this to say about that in his recorded remarks: "I know that there's a lot to say. Has [Crown Prince Mohammed] received an F-35? Have we maintained Israel's relative advantage?"

In comparing Trump to his predecessor as president, Joe Biden, Cohen said that while "President Trump came to work," during Biden's term, "no peace agreements were signed and no wars ended."

Cohen has been considered close to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In 2020, the two met with Crown Prince Mohammed and the U.S. Secretary of State at the time, Mike Pompeo, in Saudi Arabia.

The prospect of Saudi Arabia joining the Abraham Accords – normalization agreements with Israel entered into by the UAE, Bahrain, Morocco, and recently announced by Kazakhstan – was the focus of the meeting, but the process of peace was cut short by Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and the ensuing war.

Tech giants turn to government IDs for age checks despite Communication Minister’s assurances

Social media giants have adopted government ID checks to comply with the under-16 age ban, despite the government insisting ID uploads would not be necessary.

Major social media platforms including Meta, TikTok, Google, and Snapchat have adopted government-issued IDs for age verification ahead of the under-16 ban.

The adoption of ID checks comes despite repeated assurances from Communications Minister Anika Wells Australians would not be required to upload identification.

Platforms have rolled out a patchwork of age-assurance methods, including government ID uploads, biometric analysis and credit-card verification.

In practice, though, users may still have to hand over their most sensitive documents if automated systems fail —given the known flaws in age-estimation technology

Meta confirmed that if someone was dissatisfied with the outcome of age estimation, they would have to upload an ID.

“This is important, as we know age estimation technology is not 100 per cent accurate and is even more difficult at the 16 age boundary,” a spokesperson told Sky News.

TikTok claimed it would not rely solely on government-issued ID, but many of the alternative methods carried obvious flaws.

“We use a multi-layered approach to age assurance that relies on various technologies and signals to confirm someone's age,” a TikTok spokesperson said.

“If we wrongly deactivate an account, it is easy for people to submit an appeal which includes methods that don't rely on a government-issued ID.”

TikTok’s appeal options include age estimation, credit-card authorisation and government ID uploads.

Google and Snapchat also confirmed their shift toward ID-based or government-linked verification solutions as they prepare to comply with the government’s new regime.
