BETHLEHEM, West Bank (AP) — Thousands of people flocked to Bethlehem’s Manger Square on Christmas Eve to celebrate the birth of Christ after two years of turmoil in the war-torn Holy Land. The giant Christmas tree that was absent during the Israel-Hamas war returned on Wednesday for the Christmas Eve festivities.

The city where Jesus was born had cancelled Christmas celebrations for the past two years. Manger Square instead had featured a nativity scene of baby Jesus surrounded by rubble and barbed wire in homage to the situation in Gaza.

Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the top Catholic religious leader in the Holy Land, kicked off this year’s celebrations during the traditional procession from Jerusalem to Bethlehem, calling for “a Christmas full of light.” Continue…

Today, Christians throughout the world celebrate a historic event that happened in a little town in the hinterlands of the Roman Empire during the reign of Caesar Augustus.

Though it occurred far from the gaze of earthly power, this event changed the course of human history and the fate of all mankind. For on this day, in accordance with ancient prophecy, the Son of God was born to the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem, the city of King David.

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled. This was the first enrollment, when Quirin′i-us was governor of Syria. And all went to be enrolled, each to his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to be delivered. And she gave birth to her first-born son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

Demetrios Nicolaides sent a letter to all parents before the holiday break reminding them Christmas is about celebrating the “birth of Jesus Christ.”

“This is a special season to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the event that serves as a cornerstone of faith and brings the world a message of hope, peace, and love. It is a time to reflect on this profound gift and look forward with faith and optimism to the year ahead,” Nicolaides wrote in his letter to parents.

Nicolaides, a Christian who serves in Premier Danielle Smith’s provincial government, told parents that their dedication to “nurturing the next generation reflects the spirit of service and charity that the Incarnation of Christ inspires in us all.”

“The support you give to your children makes a tremendous difference in their success and well-being,” he added.

Nicolaides’s comments caused a stir online, with some challenging them and others praising them.

Toronto Police Release Identity of Victim Shot Near U of T Scarborough Campus

Toronto police have identified the victim in a shooting near the University of Toronto Scarborough campus.

Shivank Avasthi, 20, is the city’s 41st homicide victim of the year, the Toronto Police Service (TPS) said.

TPS said officers responded to a call for unknown trouble in the Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road area on Dec. 23, around 3:34 p.m. They located a man with a gunshot would, and the victim was pronounced dead on the scene. TPS said the suspect fled the scene before they arrived.

The Public Health Agency of Canada says five people have been hospitalized in an E. coli outbreak connected to a recall of some Pillsbury brand Pizza Pops.

The agency said 23 people reportedly got sick with the bacteria in seven provinces after eating or handling the affected products. The cases were reported between early October and late November and have included three in B.C., nine cases in Alberta, five in Saskatchewan, two in Manitoba, two in Ontario, one in New Brunswick, and one in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The public health agency said they estimated that for every reported case, there are 32 unreported cases in the community.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a recall of some of Pizza Pop products on Dec. 21 due to possible E. coli contamination.

Those who are infected by E. coli bacteria can spread it to other people over several days or weeks, even if they don’t have symptoms, according to the health agency.

Symptoms include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, severe stomach cramps, and mild fever. Most symptoms will end in five to 10 days, the health agency said. Continue…

The U.S. Department of State has announced sanctions against a number of individuals including the British head of the Global Disinformation Index (GDI) Clare Melford, whose organization issued a report this summer listing “digital denialism” of Canadian residential schools as one example of “hate speech” that harms democracy.

Undersecretary of State Sarah Rogers linked to a Sept. 25 GDI report on hate speech in Canada in an X post to announce Melford’s travel ban, saying that GDI has interfered with speech on American platforms, including by labeling opinions that “question” the nature of Canadian residential schools as hate speech.

“If you question Canadian blood libels about residential schools, you’re engaging in ‘hate speech’ according to Melford and GDI,” Rogers wrote Dec. 23 on X. “This NGO used StateDept taxpayer money to exhort censorship and blacklisting of American speech and press.”

For its part, a GDI spokesperson said the travel bans are “an authoritarian attack on free speech and an egregious act of government censorship,” adding that they are “immoral, unlawful, and un-American.”

The issue of residential schools in Canada has garnered further international attention since a 2021 announcement by the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation in B.C. that ground-penetrating radar had identified possible burial sites of 215 “missing children” at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School.

No excavations have been conducted at the site to confirm the claim.
