It was reported by Bloomberg earlier Wednesday that the US Coast Guard, with help from the Navy, seized the oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela.
Later Wednesday, President Trump confirmed the report and boasted about the seizure.
“We’ve just seized a tanker on the coast of Venezuela. Large tanker, very large. Largest one ever seized action — and, other things are happening. So you’ll be seeing that later. And you’ll be talking about that later with some other people,” Trump said during remarks at his White House roundtable.

A sickening and apparently racially motivated incident happened this morning at an Atlanta High School.
As WSB-TV reported, a fight broke out at North Atlanta High School, where a black student repeatedly stabbed a white classmate in the face with a pair of scissors. The altercation started in the high school’s cafeteria.
The school was placed on “soft” lockdown at 8:30 AM as a result of the incident. Classes have since returned to normal.
WSB-TV obtained video footage showing the aggressor body slamming his victim to the ground before utilizing his weapon to brutally stab his victim. He then walks away.
Witnesses to the assault can be heard repeatedly saying “oh, sh*t” and expressing alarm. One walks up to the victim and says, “Quinn, you good?”
Blood can be seen gushing out from the victim’s face as he rolls over on the ground.
The video also shows the black student racing back to his victim and screaming “white b**ch!” before another student stops him.

2026 Equalization Payments Reach Record $27 Billion

The federal equalization program involves the transfer of tax dollars collected by Ottawa from across the country to provinces with lesser abilities to raise revenues at given tax rates.
Quebec will once again receive the highest equalization payments of any province, including $13.9 billion in fiscal year 2026-27, representing an increase of roughly $300 million from fiscal year 2025-26, according to the federal finance department.
The second-highest payment will go to Manitoba at approximately $5 billion, followed by Nova Scotia at $3.5 billion, New Brunswick at $3.3 billion, Prince Edward Island at $723 million, Ontario at $406 million, and Newfoundland and Labrador at $182 million.
The equalization payments for 2025-26 followed a similar pattern, with Manitoba at $4.7 billion, Nova Scotia at $3.4 billion, New Brunswick at $3.1 billion, Prince Edward Island at $666 million, Ontario at $546 million, and Newfoundland and Labrador at $113 million.
Meanwhile, Canada’s western provinces, including British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan, will continue to receive no equalization payments in 2026-27, as their share of payments gets transferred to other provinces. This has been the case for the western provinces for more than a decade, but all provinces have received equalization payments at some point since the program’s implementation nearly 70 years ago. The Liberal government’s second attempt at passing a bill aiming to strengthen the border and immigration rules was successful before the House of Commons went on Christmas break.
The last few days of proceedings were eventful on Parliament Hill, with another Tory MP defecting to the Liberals and the Bloc Québécois managing to amend the Combatting Hate Act to remove the religious defence to hate speech in the Criminal Code.
Bill C-12, the Strengthening Canada’s Immigration System and Borders Act, passed third reading in the House on Dec. 11 and will be reviewed in the Senate when it returns from the holiday break in February 2026.
The Liberals’ first attempt to beef up border security and immigration rules with Bill C-2 had hit a wall, with opposition parties and civil liberties groups expressing concerns it was infringing on privacy rights. Bill C-2 seeks to give Canada Post the power to open letters without a warrant and would facilitate warrantless access to subscriber data to security agencies.
The revised version of the bill came by way of C-12 introduced in October, without the most controversial clauses. It gives expanded powers to the border agency, including to inspect goods destined for export. It also grants more powers to the minister of immigration in matters of information sharing or to intervene on refugee claims.
Conservatives reviewing the bill in committee had proposed a number of amendments to C-12, and some were ultimately adopted on Dec. 11 in the House. Continue…
Toronto School Board Education Director Fired, Supervisor Says ‘Fresh Start’ Needed

The education director for the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) has been fired by a provincially appointed supervisor, who said the board was in need of a “fresh start.”
Supervisor Rohit Gupta said in a Dec. 12 letter to staff that Clayton La Touche is leaving, “effective immediately.” The “difficult decision” was made in collaboration with Education Minister Paul Calandra, Gupta said.
Associate director Stacey Zucker will fill in the role of interim director of education, he said, adding that she had held the role during the last school year and offers a “wealth of experience.” Zucker has also been associate director at the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board.
Minister Calandra said in a statement that Gupta is guiding the school board to refocus on student achievement.
The minister has recently put six school boards, including TDSB, under provincial control following investigations into the boards, and filed legislation in May to expand the minister’s authority over school boards.
The most recent board to be put under provincial supervision, the Near North District School Board, was found by a ministry review to have “deep-rooted dysfunction and mismanagement,” the Ontario government said. Continue…

The Aug. 7 B.C. Supreme Court decision by Justice Barbara Young granted the Cowichan Nation aboriginal title to around 750 acres of land in Richmond, B.C., citing their historical village and fishing grounds in the area.
Young held that municipal and Crown land titles in the area held by the City of Richmond, federal government, and Vancouver Fraser Port Authority were “invalid” because aboriginal title had not been lawfully extinguished, and issued a suspended sentence giving 18 months for the affected land to be transferred.
Although Cowichan Nation made no claim on private property in the case and would have to undertake new litigation to pursue it, Young’s ruling has created uncertainty for some private landowners over the future of their private title.
In light of the ruling, some Richmond residents in October received a letter by Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie advising that the ruling could “compromise the status and validity” of private properties in the affected area.
Representatives from the B.C. government have also reached out to potentially impacted private property owners in an information campaign that started last month.
Eby said the loan guarantees for those in the area potentially impacted by the ruling may include $100 million in guaranteed financing for Montrose Properties, the largest private landholder in the impacted area, along with $54 million for additional private property owners. A new report warns that prominent Western universities, including Canadian institutions, have collaborated with Chinese artificial-intelligence labs on research that could advance Beijing’s mass-surveillance apparatus and other tools tied to human rights abuses.
The Dec. 8 report, authored by the New York-based business intelligence firm Strategy Risks in partnership with the non-profit Human Rights Foundation, outlines how leading Western institutions in countries such as the United States, Canada, and others in Europe have collaborated with Chinese AI labs that are part of, or closely connected to, Beijing’s surveillance and security apparatus.
It warns that these partnerships carry direct human rights implications, as research presented as benign has the potential to be misused to facilitate Beijing’s surveillance and coercion against dissidents, ethnic minorities, and rights advocates. It also raises concerns about AI research flowing freely to China’s state security agencies under the national intelligence law, which requires all individuals and organizations in China to provide data for intelligence work when requested.
“When Western institutions collaborate with laboratories embedded in this apparatus, they risk enabling technologies that facilitate arbitrary detention, forced labor, religious persecution, and the systematic erosion of fundamental freedoms,” reads the report.
“The Chinese Communist Party uses security and national security frameworks as tools for control, censorship, and suppressing dissenting views, transforming technical systems into instruments of repression.” Continue…
