The fact that Syria's head of state got his start working for ISIS, and was a founding member of Syrian al-Qaeda, continues to produce embarrassing headlines.

One full year after former president Bashar al-Assad was overthrown and fled to Moscow, Canada has very belatedly removed President Ahmed al-Sharaa's militia group Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, according to a Friday statement from the country’s Foreign Ministry. As part of the new action, Syria has also been removed from its list of state sponsors of terrorism (a list the country had been on over many years of the Assad government).

Sharaa, formerly known as Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, founded and for years headed up the terror group HTS in Idlib province. HTS is the group that took control of Damascus after the collapse of the Syrian army in December 2024.

"Following extensive review, the Government of Canada has removed Syria from Canada's List of Foreign State Supporters of Terrorism under the State Immunity Act, as well as removed Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) from the List of Terrorist Entities under the Canadian Criminal Code," the ministry said.

The US was the first to act, having lifted a $10 million bounty on Sharaa within the months after he seized power, followed by a full US delisting.

The Canadian foreign ministry further said that the decision was "not taken lightly." It stated, "These measures are in line with recent decisions taken by our allies, including the United Kingdom and the United States, and follow the efforts by the Syrian transitional government to advance Syria's stability, build an inclusive and secure future for its citizens, and work alongside global partners to reinforce regional stability and counter terrorism."

So Canada seems to be admitting that HTS is indeed linked to al-Qaeda, and was properly designated in years past as a terror group, but that now it is merely going along with its allies the UK and US which removed the legal designation earlier. Continue…

Ottawa’s Ashok Kumar Biswas is among the internationally trained doctors who are celebrating after being given second chances to apply for medical residency positions in Ontario.

Biswas, who attended medical school in India and has two post-graduate medical degrees, has been working for six years to be able to practise medicine in Canada, which is now his home.

He was preparing to apply for a medical residency in Ontario this fall when the Ontario government abruptly introduced a new policy that upended his plans. That policy disqualified most internationally trained medical graduates from the first round of the highly competitive residency matching program.

At the time, Biswas said his hopes of ever practising medicine in Canada were fading.

This past week, however, he and other international medical graduates learned the program was being expanded so they could apply after a judge granted an injunction against the controversial Ontario policy.

Biswas said he was grateful.

“At least we are getting a fair chance to submit our applications,” he said. “Getting a chance is all it takes.”

Under the policy change, the only internationally trained physicians eligible for the first-round of crucial residency matching would have been those who had done at least two years of high school in Ontario. That would include Ontario residents who left the province to attend medical school elsewhere and then returned to practise.

Ballantine and the Biden prosecutors made up evidence, pressured the defendants to lie to the court, planted evidence in the Proud Boys chat group, and led the charge to send the innocent men to prison for over a decade each.

Tokyo and Beijing have exchanged accusations after their fighter jets had at least two close calls amid Chinese naval drills.

Japan was the first to report the incident, stating that Chinese J-15 fighter jets locked their fire control radars on Japanese F-15J warplanes on at least two occasions on Saturday. The confrontation occurred over international waters to the southeast of Okinawa, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said.

“These radar illuminations are a dangerous act that went beyond what is necessary for the safe flight of aircraft,” Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi told reporters on Sunday, adding that Tokyo had already lodged a complaint over what she called “extremely regrettable” actions.

Beijing has rejected the allegations, stating that Japanese aircraft repeatedly approached and harassed the Chinese Navy while it was conducting previously announced carrier exercises in the area.

“We solemnly demand that the Japanese side immediately stop slandering and smearing and strictly restrain front-line actions,” Chinese Navy spokesperson Colonel Wang Xuemeng said. According to IRCC’s response:

81.4% of international students surveyed were working

68.5% worked off-campus

Only 6.3% worked strictly on-campus

6.6% worked both on- and off-campus

Among off-campus workers:

73.1% worked more than 20 hours per week

38.1% worked more than 30 hours per week

While international students were logging full work weeks, Canadian youth unemployment surged past 14% nationally, one of the worst non-pandemic levels in more than a decade.
