Brazilian authorities are really going after some of the loyalists of imprisoned ex-President Jair Bolsonaro. In the latest, a former Brazilian police chief who fled the country after being convicted for his role in an alleged "attempted coup" linked to Bolsonaro has been arrested in Paraguay.

Silvinei Vasques was detained Friday at Silvio Pettirossi International Airport in Asunción, Paraguay authorities confirmed in a statement. He was detained charges of "identity theft" after trying to bypass immigration checks by posing as a Paraguayan citizen.

He was trying to board a flight to Panama, claiming El Salvador as his final destination. Apparently he didn't enter Paraguay legally, but entered "clandestinely" while "evading justice in his home country." Continue…

Did you know you can be sued in a U.S. court, even if you’ve never set foot there? (Video)

If your data is stored with American cloud providers like Amazon, Microsoft, or Google, you’re already under U.S. law, and Canada so far has done nothing about it.

Under the U.S. CLOUD Act, American agencies, and even private litigants can compel those companies to hand over data stored in Canada, because they are on US owned servers even in Toronto and Montreal.

That includes health records, financial data, research files, or AI models hosted on U.S.-owned servers.

You could be sued for financial disputes, IP claims, tax investigations, privacy breaches, or class-action cases: all because your data sits on U.S.-owned servers.

The result? Canada’s data. America’s jurisdiction.

Ryan Williams Bay of Quinte:

In Parliament this week, I warned: “We’ve lost digital sovereignty. We need to protect Canadian data before it’s too late.”

We need a Digital Sovereignty Act:

Protect Canadian IP and data like we protect critical minerals or energy.

Require every publicly funded research project to include a Canadian commercialization plan ensuring discoveries move beyond the lab and create domestic companies, jobs, and intellectual property ownership.

Require Canadian data residency for sensitive industries to counter U.S. CLOUD Act overreach.

Implement export controls for AI, quantum, biotech, and defense tech.

BeOne Medicines, a global oncology company based in Switzerland, said Health Canada had granted its tislelizumab injection medication a notice of compliance. The drug will be sold under the brand name Tevimbra, according to a Dec. 23 company news release.

BeOne said the injection would be used in combination with gemcitabine and cisplatin as a “first-line treatment” for adults with recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Dr. Desiree Hao, head and neck medical oncologist and University of Calgary professor, said the approval was a “milestone” and a treatment advancement for those with the cancer.

“Adult patients with recurrent or metastatic NPC have long faced limited therapeutic choices,” Hao said.

Nasopharyngeal cancer is a malignant tumour, meaning it can spread to other parts of the body, and starts in the cells of the upper part of the throat, according to the Canadian Cancer Society. Continue…

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced an additional $2.5 billion in “economic assistance” for Ukraine as he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Halifax on Dec. 27.

Canada has previously given nearly $22 billion in total to Ukraine since February 2022, including more than $6.5 billion in military assistance.

Zelenskyy’s stop in Halifax came on his way to Florida for a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump over a proposed peace plan.

Carney said the additional funds would help Ukraine “unlock” financing from the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the money will enable the International Monetary Fund to lend an additional $8.4 billion to Ukraine as part of an extended financing program. It will also act as a loan guarantee of up to $322 million to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to support Ukraine’s gas imports and reinforce its energy security, the PMO said.

Canada’s financial support will also be used as a loan guarantee of up to $1.3 billion to the World Bank’s International Bank for Reconstruction and Development to support Ukraine reconstruction. Continue…
