The plane landed directly on top of the Toyota Camry and appeared to bounce up and down.

The two 27-year-old men on board the plane walked away with no injuries. The driver of the car, identified as a 57-year-old woman, miraculously only suffered minor injuries.

The Federal Aviation Administration said it will investigate the crash.

The disclosure comes from order paper question Q-502, submitted by Conservative MP John Barlow (Foothills), who asked for a year-by-year breakdown of consulting costs, details of individual contracts, and what safeguards exist to prevent insider contracting and conflicts of interest.

The response was tabled through Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and formally signed by Heath MacDonald, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, on December 8, 2025.

The operation, carried out by the Clandestine Laboratory Enforcement and Response (CLEAR) Team, also involved search warrants at a Richmond property linked to the investigation.

The investigation began in summer 2025 and culminated on September 14 when officers executed warrants at a Surrey home in the 12900-block of 54A Ave. and a Richmond townhouse in the 12300-block of McNeely Dr.

At the Surrey site, RCMP discovered a synthetic drug lab believed to be producing fentanyl and seized approximately 14 kilograms of the drug, 13 firearms — including eight handguns, five long-barrel rifles, and a .50 calibre rifle — six firearm suppressors, four stun batons, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, and 206 litres of gamma-butyrolactone (GBL), a chemical used to produce GHB.

Canada’s Ambassador to US Announces She’s Stepping Down

Canada’s ambassador to the United States, Kirsten Hillman, said she will be leaving her position in the new year. Her announcement on Dec. 9 comes as Canada prepares to enter high-stakes negotiations on renewing the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA or CUSMA) in 2026.

Hillman said she will stay available to Canada’s negotiating team in the “months ahead,” as well as helping her successor learn their way around the position, in a statement posted on social media on Dec. 9.

“While there will never be a perfect time to leave, this is the right time to put a team in place that will see the CUSMA Review through to its conclusion,” Hillman wrote in her Dec. 9 statement, adding that she thanks Prime Minister Mark Carney for his “strong leadership” while she has served.

Hillman was appointed as acting ambassador to the United States in 2019 by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and began serving as ambassador in March 2020. In June of this year, she became Canada’s lead negotiator as Ottawa seeks to secure a new trade and security agreement with Washington amidst increasing tariffs. Continue…

Nova Scotia saw the highest rate of human trafficking cases reported to police last year, with numbers showing the province saw three times as many cases compared to the national average, according to new data from Statistics Canada.

The report, “Trafficking in persons in Canada, 2024,” released on Dec. 8, looked at the number of cases reported to police between 2014 and 2024, using data from the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Survey. It says that of the 5,070 reports to police nationwide, the majority of victims were women and girls.

Nova Scotia saw the highest rate of cases during the 10-year timeframe at 4.5 per 100,000 people, according to StatCan.

“The high rate of human trafficking in Nova Scotia has been attributed in part to its coastal location, with its ports and transportation links,“ the report said. ”Specifically, Nova Scotia serves as a key node in a human trafficking corridor that facilitates the movement of victims, either originating from, or passing through Atlantic Canada to other parts of the country.”

Human trafficking involves recruiting, transporting, sheltering, or controlling the movements of a person so they can be exploited, StatCan said, adding it was usually for sex trafficking or forced labour.

“Human trafficking does not require the crossing of international borders and can occur entirely within a single country,” the federal organization said. Continue…

Microsoft Pledges $7.5B in AI Investment in Canada

Microsoft has announced plans to spend $7.5 billion on the expansion of digital and AI infrastructure in Canada over the next two years.

The funding will be used to increase computing capacity at Microsoft’s two primary Canadian Azure data centres in Toronto and Quebec City, Microsoft president and vice-chair Brad Smith said in a Dec. 9 blog post. He said the data centres will power modernized public services and AI innovation, and will lead to the creation of thousands of construction and permanent engineering and tech jobs.

“We’re building new digital and AI infrastructure needed for the nation’s growth and prosperity, with new capacity beginning to come online in the second half of 2026,” Smith said.

Canada wrapped up a two-day gathering of G7 tech ministers this week by signing agreements with European partners, who are adopting a more stringent approach to regulating artificial intelligence compared to the United States.

The meeting of industry, digital and technology ministers in Montreal resulted in memorandums of understanding with the European Union and the UK and a joint initiative with Germany, which centre around digital issues, including artificial intelligence.

U.S. Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy Michael Kratsio also attended the Dec. 8-9 meetings, but no agreement with the United States was announced.

Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon said Canada has a robust trade relationship with its southern neighbour but it is also deepening its relationship with European countries.

“What we want to do strategically as well, as we move from reliance to resilience, is expand our trade, and we did that this past number of days,” he said during the closing press conference on Dec. 9.

The Alberta government, in a sitting that stretched overnight into the early hours of Dec. 10, passed legislation invoking the notwithstanding clause to shield three gender-related laws from legal challenges.

Bill 9, also known as the Protecting Alberta’s Children Statutes Amendment Act, cleared third reading just after 2 a.m. on Dec. 10. The bill, tabled last month, uses the notwithstanding clause to uphold laws that prohibit gender transition surgeries for minors, require parental consent for pronoun changes at school, and limit participation in female sports to biological females.

Section 33 of the Charter of Rights, known as the notwithstanding clause, allows governments to override certain provisions of the Charter for a five-year term when passing legislation. With the passage of Bill 9, the three gender-related laws–Bill 26, Bill 27, and Bill 29, all passed last year–are protected from judicial review for five years, unless the legislature re-enacts the clause.

The Alberta government says its use of the notwithstanding clause, which it describes as a tool to balance power between the courts and elected officials, was necessary to protect children, uphold parental rights, and maintain fairness in sport.

“This isn’t about exclusion; it’s about protection. Our children deserve better,” Justice Minister Mickey Amery said at the legislature in the afternoon of Dec. 9.

“By passing Bill 9, we affirm that Alberta’s commitment remains absolutely strong and sound when it comes to family values, to child safety, and, of course, to true equality within this province.” Continue…

The federal health department has confirmed to MPs of the health committee that taxpayer dollars fund crack pipes and other drug paraphernalia under Health Canada’s “harm reduction” programs, after saying this wasn’t the case in October.

Assistant Deputy Health Minister Kendal Weber initially told the House of Commons health committee that funding provided by Health Canada or the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) was not being used to purchase crack pipes, when questioned by Conservative MP and health critic Dan Mazier on Oct. 2.

Weber clarified to MPs while testifying before the committee on Dec. 9 that Health Canada doesn’t purchase harm reduction supplies directly, but does provide funding to community organizations that purchase “harm reduction tools,” including pipes, as first reported by Blacklock’s Reporter.

“We do not track individual expenses down to the minute level, but in fact we do track categories of expenditures, and those do include harm reduction equipment,” Weber told MPs. Continue…

Ottawa has joined an effort by top Canadian institutions, in what it called ‘one of the largest recruitment programs of its kind globally’

Canada on Tuesday launched a $1.7 billion program to recruit leading global researchers, part of the effort to poach intellectual talent looking to leave the United States because of President Donald Trump’s policies.

Top Canadian institutions — including the country’s largest hospital network and the University of Toronto — have previously announced multimillion dollar strategies to recruit experts whose work has been impacted by Trump’s broad cuts to scientific research.

The federal government has now joined this effort, in what it called “one of the largest recruitment programs of its kind globally.” Continue…
