The BBC reports that five men have been arrested in Germany and are suspected of plotting to drive a vehicle into people at a Christmas market, with authorities citing an “Islamist motive” behind the plot.
Police note that the group was already in the midst of operational planning with a goal of maximum carnage.
Bavaria’s state interior minister, Joachim Herrmann, told Bild the “excellent cooperation between our security services” helped to prevent “a potentially Islamist-motivated attack”.
Although authorities did not say when or where the planned attack was supposed to take place, they believed it to be one in the Dingolfing-Landau area, north east of Munich.

Severe flooding caused by torrential rains has killed at least 37 people in the Moroccan coastal city of Safi, the Interior Ministry said on Monday.
Authorities said flash floods hit the region on Sunday morning, inundating around 70 homes and businesses and sweeping away at least ten vehicles. Fourteen people were hospitalized with various injuries, while rescue operations remain ongoing.
According to Morocco World news, Khalid Iazza, director of Mohammed V Hospital in Safi, said an emergency plan was activated to respond to the influx of victims after heavy rainfall. Speaking at a parliamentary session, Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch noted that 37 millimeters of rain (1.5 inches) in a short time had fallen in the city.

Energy Minister Tim Hodgson says he has been taking inquiries from Conservative MPs about crossing the floor.
Hodgson was asked by reporters on Dec. 15 whether there were more Tory MPs ready to defect to the Liberals after two former Conservative MPs recently defected to the Liberal Party.
“Let’s say I’m getting lots of inquiries,” Hodgson told reporters.
The minister was also asked about the conversations he had with Michael Ma before the former Tory MP defected to the Liberals, noting there are rumours that Hodgson played a “vital role” in recruiting Ma.
“Let me say that our prime minister is a former businessman and a pragmatist. I’m a former businessman and a pragmatist. Michael Ma is a former businessman and a pragmatist,” Hodgson told reporters. “We all share a view that it is a time to unite, not to divide.”

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said his province is launching a new multibillion-dollar plan to double tourism in Niagara Falls with additional large casinos, a theme park, and a new boutique hotel and spa attraction.
Ford announced Ontario’s Destination Niagara Strategy Dec. 15, saying the venture will create tens of thousands of new jobs and boost the region’s economy and Ontario’s economy as a whole.
“With the proper support and the right vision, Niagara Falls and the entire Niagara region can be an engine for Ontario’s economy and even a bigger tourist destination than it already is,” said Ford, who made the announcement in Niagara Falls alongside Tourism Minister Stan Cho, Transportation Minister Prabmeet

Israel has denied entry to the West Bank for six Canadian MPs, as well as the remainder of a 30-person delegation led by a Canadian Muslim group.
The MPs were part of a group organized and sponsored by the non-profit The Canadian-Muslim Vote and accompanied by staff with the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) with the aim of meeting with displaced Palestinians and community members of various faiths.
The group was denied entry as it tried to cross from Jordan into the West Bank on Dec. 16. Liberal MPs Fares Al Soud, Iqra Khalid, Gurbux Saini, Sameer Zuberi and Aslam Rana were among those denied entry, along with NDP MP Jenny Kwan.
A statement issued by Israel’s embassy in Canada said the delegation was denied entry due to concerns regarding the sponsor organization, The Canadian-Muslim Vote, which it said receives “the vast majority” of its funding from Islamic Relief Canada. Ottawa has given its stamp of approval this week to a merger between Canadian natural resources company Teck Resources Ltd. and Britain’s Anglo American PLC.
The two companies announced their plans to merge in September to create Anglo Teck, a $70 billion copper mining powerhouse, but needed shareholder and government approvals to move ahead.
The plan received shareholder approval last week and the companies were granted regulatory clearance by the Canadian government under the Investment Canada Act on Dec. 15, putting the companies one step closer to making the consolidation a reality.
Industry Minister Mélanie Joly said in a Dec. 15 media statement the merger will provide a net benefit to Canada and labelled it a “significant win.”
As stipulated by the approval, the headquarters will be located in Vancouver, along with the majority of the company’s executives and board members.
Joly says the companies have committed to the creation of approximately 4,000 jobs in Canada and an investment of $4.5 billion in the country over a five-year period. Continue…

Canada will provide an additional $50 million to purchase military drones and drone parts for Ukraine, which has been at war with Russia since 2022.
Defence Minister David McGuinty announced the new funding at the 32nd Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting, co-hosted by Germany and the United Kingdom, on Dec. 16. More than 50 countries attended the virtual meeting to “discuss Ukraine’s urgent requirements and progress on key multilateral initiatives,” the defence department said in a Dec. 16 release.
McGuinty said Canada will provide the additional $50 million to the Drone Capability Coalition (DCC), which builds on Canada’s previous contributions of $37 million. The DCC is one of four capability coalitions Canada contributes to under the Ukraine Defense Contact Group. The other three include the Air Force Coalition, the Armor Capability Coalition, and the Information Technology Capability Coalition.
The DCC aims to ensure Ukraine has a stable supply of drones and drone parts, support drone manufacturing in the West, and promote unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) capabilities.
Drones have been increasingly used in the Russia-Ukraine war. Ukraine has increased its attacks on Russia’s energy infrastructure using a combination of drones and missiles, while Russia has upgraded and ramped up production of its main attack drone, according to a Nov. 10 post by the think tank Chatham House.
Canada will also continue to provide Ukraine with surplus Canadian Armed Forces equipment, including AIM-7 and AIM-9 motors and ancillaries, with deliveries beginning early next year, the defence department says. Continue…

The Department of National Defence has confirmed an internal investigation is underway to address the leak of confidential data that compares two fighter jets that could serve as replacements for Canada’s CF-18s.
“Commercial information related to any solicitation process is considered protected information,” Department of National Defence (DND) spokesperson Andrée-Anne Poulin said in a media statement, adding that the investigation is at its early stages.
CBC/Radio-Canada published DND data it obtained on Nov. 26 that compared the American-made Lockheed Martin F-35 to the Swedish Gripen made by Saab. The data showed that the Gripen had a considerable lead over the F-35 when it came to mission performance and upgradability, with more moderate leads on technical criteria and capability delivery.
The data from 2021 showed that while both jets passed the mandatory requirements for the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), the F-35 scored 95 percent on military capabilities, while the Gripen had a score of 33 percent.
The CAF has been seeking to replace its fleet of aging fourth-generation CF-18s, which were introduced in the 1980s. Ottawa committed to buying 88 fifth-generation F-35s in 2022, to be purchased in stages between 2026 and 2032, at a cost of $19 billion.
Auditor General Karen Hogan estimated in early 2025 that the cost of the deal had increased to $27.7 billion due to rising inflation, fluctuations in exchange rates, and heightened global demand for munitions, while an additional $5.5 billion would be needed to upgrade infrastructure and buy advanced weapons. Statistics Canada is seeking to collect and share data on gender-confused children in its latest move to promote the LGBT agenda to minors.
From November to mid-December, Statistics Canada held consultations with various LGBT groups to discuss how to release 2021 census data on gender-confused children ages 0-14, according to a report shared with the National Post.
“For the upcoming 2026 Census, Statistics Canada has been consulting with the Canadian population, experts and stakeholders on gender,” the government agency wrote in a recent report.
“The Agency has finished conducting extensive qualitative and quantitative testing, notably to assess the impact of modifying the gender response categories to include ‘man’ and ‘woman,’ and ‘boy’ and ‘girl’ for those younger than 15 years,” it continued.
In 2021, StatsCan conducted the first-ever census to collect data on sex assigned at birth as well as how Canadians later ‘identified’ as their gender. The census collected data from Canadians of all ages but only published that of Canadians 15 years and older.
According to the information, released April 2022, 0.33% of the Canadian population age 15 or older were gender-confused, with 0.19% believing they are transgender and 0.14% believing they are non-binary. Continue…
