Putin threatens Europe with war if it wants one, as Ukraine peace talks falter

Published Wed, Dec 3 20252:33 AM EST1/2

Key Points

• Peace talks held between the U.S. and Russia on Tuesday failed to deliver a breakthrough.

• Russian President Vladimir Putin doubled down on threats toward Europe ahead of the talks, saying Moscow was “ready” for war.

• The Kremlin said talks over a draft Ukraine peace plan would continue.

Peace talks held between the U.S. and Russia on Tuesday failed to deliver a breakthrough with Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of discussions doubling down on threats toward Europe, saying Russia was “ready” for war with the Continent.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and son-in-law Jared Kushner had traveled to Moscow for talks with Putin and his closest aides on a draft peace plan aimed at ending the almost four-year war in Ukraine.

The talks lasted five hours, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov told reportersafter the discussions, saying the meeting focused on a U.S.-drafted peace plan and was “very useful, constructive, and highly informative” but that there was more work to be done.

“We agreed on some things … while others caused criticism, and the President [Putin] also made no secret of our critical, even negative, attitude toward a number of proposals. But the main thing is that we had a very useful discussion,” Ushakov said, in comments translated by NBC News.

It’s unclear which peace plan was presented to the Russians after an initial 28-point plan, secretly devised by the U.S. and Russia, was presented to Ukraine a few weeks ago.

Kyiv and its European allies hastily amended that plan, whittling it down to 19 proposals, with Ukrainian officials travelling to Florida last weekend for more talks on the proposals.

Russia and Ukraine are miles apart when it comes to central elements of a framework peace agreement, with Moscow demanding that Kyiv cede partially occupied territory in the east of the country to Russia, and disagreeing over Western-backed security guarantees for Ukraine.

Putin aide Ushakov said Tuesday that both sides had discussed a 27-point plan and had received more documents from the U.S. side, although he did not elaborate as to what those contained. He added that Russia and the U.S. had agreed to not disclose details of the talks.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Kremlinspokesperson Dmitry Peskov said it would be incorrect to say Putin had rejected the proposals put to him by the U.S. delegation.

“A direct exchange of views took place yesterday for the first time,” Peskov said, in comments cited by the Reuters news agency. “Some things were accepted, some things were marked as unacceptable — this is a normal working process of finding a compromise.”

‘Ready’ for war

The talks in Moscow came after Putin launched a tirade against Europe, saying that its counter peace proposals were “absolutely unacceptable” for Russia, and that the region’s leadership had “no peace agenda.”

“We’re not going to war with Europe; I’ve said that a hundred times. But if Europe suddenly wants to fight us and starts, we’re ready right now,” Putin told journalists ahead of his meeting with Witkoff and Kushner.

European officials have expressed consternation in recent weeks that they, and Ukraine, were excluded from initial talks between the U.S. and Russia that led to an original draft peace plan seen to heavily favor Russia.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said Monday that “this week could be pivotal for diplomacy. It is clear that Russia does not want peace, and therefore we need to make Ukraine as strong as possible.”

Europe will have watched Tuesday’s talks in Russia closely. There are concerns that Trump, who has appeared to have a warmer relationship with Putin than with Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, at times, could throw his support behind Russia’s peace proposals in a bid to end the war sooner rather than later.

Eager to appear optimistic over the prospect of peace, Zelenskyy told Irish lawmakers on Tuesday that Ukraine was “closer to peace than ever before” and that there was a “real, real chance” of an agreement after talks with Washington.

No hurry for a deal

Geopolitical experts say the Kremlin is willing to eke out the peace process for as long as possible, with Russia maintaining that it has the advantage on the battlefield and can extract heavy concessions from Ukraine in the peace process.

Paul Skinner, investment director at Wellington Management, was also pessimistic over any near-term progress toward peace.

“We think the Ukraine-Russia story is going to grind on, and on, and on,” he told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Europe” on Wednesday.

It’s very unlikely we’re going to get a resolution. While Putin is still making ground, he’s unlikely to sue for peace. I’m afraid that our prognosis, and it has been from the start, is that this is going to be a very long drawn-out problem.”

Michael Froman, president of the Council on Foreign Relations, said it was in Putin’s “interest just to keep the process going, to have a long process of diplomatic engagement.”

“He wants to have abroader conversation about Russia’s reintegration with the West and relations with the United States, commercial agreements with the United States, and to make this long and drawn out while he continues to bomb Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and makes incremental progress on the ground,” Froman told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Tuesday.

Amos Hochstein, TWG Global managing partner and former senior advisor to the president in the Biden administration, agreed that Russia would likely drag its heels over a deal.

“I think it’s difficult to get to a point of a deal where a lot of territory has to be given up by the Ukrainians in return for security guarantees that are a bit loose and flimsy, and for the Ukrainians who fought so much over the last several years, that’s hard to swallow,” he said Tuesday on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”

“I think the problem is that the Ukrainians probably can compromise in some of this, but any concessions they would get from the U.S. on that deal would be difficult to get the Russians to agree to [as they] depend on the war, want to win, but also have a war economy.”

“The Russians are not in a hurry for a deal here,” he added.

Netanyahu pushed Trump on pardon request – Axios

The US president last month asked his Israeli counterpart, Isaac Herzog, to fully pardon Netanyahu in a long-standing corruption case

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lobbied US President Donald Trump for stronger backing for his bid for a presidential pardon over a long-running corruption case, Axios has reported, citing officials.

Netanyahu last week formally asked Israeli President Isaac Herzog to pardon him from a case in which he has been entangled for over a decade. The plea came after Trump, a staunch Netanyahu ally, urged Herzog in November to grant a full pardon.

During a call on Monday, Netanyahu asked Trump for more help in his push for a pardon from the Israeli president, according to Axios. Trump expressed confidence that the effort would ultimately succeed but stopped short of committing to new steps==, the outlet reported, citing US and Israeli officials familiar with the exchange.

“Netanyahu wants Trump to do more, but the president has done all he can do,” one American official told Axios.

Trump’s letter to Herzog last month dismissed the charges against Netanyahu as “a political, unjustified prosecution” and demanded a full pardon. Critics said the gesture risks undermining Israel’s judiciary and turning pardons into political weapons.

Netanyahu is the first sitting Israeli prime minister ever to stand trial, facing charges of fraud, breach of trust, and accepting bribes in three separate cases alleging he traded political favors for lavish gifts from wealthy associates.

Indicted in 2019, he has pleaded not guilty and insists the case is a politically motivated campaign by the media, police, and judiciary to remove him from power. The trial, which began in 2020, has been repeatedly delayed and is expected to drag on for years.

Critics argue that Netanyahu has used Israel’s ongoing conflicts to insulate himself from legal jeopardy and maintain his hold on power.

In his plea for clemency, Netanyahu said a pardon would allow him to devote “all of his time, abilities, and energy” to leading Israel through what he called “critical times.” Herzog’s office said the president will review the request once he receives the full set of legal opinions.

(I remember at that time when Trump stated that it was questionable that he was fervent about it. As a matter of fact, Trump and the US would have less pressure on us.)

Rubio names key obstacle in Ukraine talks

The issue of territory remains pivotal to a potential peace deal, the US secretary of state has said

==The principal obstacle to a peace deal between Moscow and Kiev is a strip of land in Russia’s Donbass that remains under Ukrainian control]], US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said. His comments came after high-level Russia-US talks in the Kremlin, which Moscow described as “productive” but yielded no breakthrough.

In a Fox News interview on Tuesday, Rubio saidRussia and Ukraine “are [now] literally fighting over… a 30- to 50-kilometer space and the 20% of the Donetsk region that remains [under Kiev’s control].”

The diplomat noted that Washington’s goal is to “figure out what could the Ukrainians live with that gives them security guarantees for the future [that] they’re never going to be invaded again.”

He also railed at Western experts who insist the US should fund Ukraine’s military effort for as long as it takes. “That’s not realistic… And that’s not going to happen… You can’t sustain the scale and scope of it,” he said.

Rubio also rebuked calls for the US to negotiate solely with Kiev. “You can’t end the war between Russia and Ukraine without talking to Russia,” he said, stressing that the US is working to “bridge the divide between both sides.

“We’ve gotten closer, but we’re still not there… I hope it changes,” Rubio added.

Rubio’s remarks follow a nearly five-hour meeting at the Kremlin between Russian President Vladimir Putin, US envoy Steve Witkoff, and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Senior Kremlin aideYury Ushakov, who also attended, described the talks as “rather useful, constructive, rather substantive,” but said “a compromise hasn’t been found” and “there’s still a lot of work to be done.”

The discussions were focused on the American-backed peace framework, which initially revolved around a 28-point draft that leaked to the media last month. The roadmap reportedly required Kiev to relinquish parts of Donbass still under its control, abandon its NATO ambitions, and limit the size of its armed forces.

Kiev and its EU backers, however, have refused to contemplate any concessions to Russia, despite Ukrainian forces being firmly on the back foot in Donbass and elsewhere.(hence Russia continues to take more territory.)

Trump announces ‘land strikes’ against drug cartels (VIDEO)

The US military has conducted a number of deadly attacks on boats it claims were linked to Venezuelan-led narcotics smuggling

The US will soon start bombing alleged drug cartel targets on land, US President Donald Trump told reporters in a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

The announcement comes amid a massive US military buildup in the Caribbean, which Washington says is aimed at curbing Venezuelan-led drug trafficking. Caracas has denied the accusations, arguing that the US is using them as a pretext to justify invading the resource-rich South American nation.

In recent months, Washington has killed more than 80 people in strikes on boats in the Caribbean and Pacific that it claims were smuggling narcotics.

“And we’re going to start doing those strikes on land, too. You know, the land is much easier,” Trump said at the White House. “We’re going to start that very soon.”

He did not expand on where or when the strikes would take place.

Asked to elaborate, Trump added that Washington could expand the strikes to any country allegedly smuggling drugs into the US, specifically mentioning Colombia.

“Anybody that’s doing that and selling it into our country is subject to attack,” he said.

The US military deployment in the Caribbean waters off Venezuela, which has now reportedly reached upwards of 16,000 personnel, has been accompanied by increasing political pressure on Caracas.

In recent months, Washington has offered a $50 million bounty for information leading to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, and greenlit clandestine CIA operations in his country.

Maduro has denied the drug trafficking allegations, accusing the US of “fabricating a new war” and regime-change operation aimed at seizing Venezuela’s vast resource reserves.

(This is the warning to them, the problem is they don't know if Trump is crazy enough to do all that, that scares a lot of countries, especially when they are laughing about it. KEK)

Kiev will have to make ‘painful concessions’ to achieve peace – German foreign minister

Ukraine may need to hold a referendum on territorial changes as part of an agreement with Russia, Johann Wadephul has said

An end to the Ukraine conflict will most likely require “painful concessions” from Kiev, including on territorial issues, German Foreign MinisterJohann Wadephul has said. Its chance to stop the hostilities has “never been greater” than now, he told Neue Osnabrucker Zeitung (NOZ) on Tuesday.

His words came ahead of a meeting between US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. They are expected to discuss the peace plan for ending the Ukraine conflict put forward by Washington last month.

The details of the initial plan have not officially been made public, but the media reported that it requires Ukraine to cede parts of Donbass (the Donetsk People’s Republic and Lugansk People’s Republic) it still controls, abandon its NATO bid, and accept limits on its military. Russia has cautiously welcomed the initiative, saying that many points of the plan are acceptable, but added that it expects the proposal to be modified by all sides.

“It is the task of diplomacy to work out compromises that the conflicting parties can support. Ultimately, this will certainly always involve painful concessions,” Wadephul said, commenting on the prospects of a negotiated settlement. According to the minister, Ukraine would need to hold a referendum on the peace conditions, including territorial concessions. He also maintained that Kiev should be offered security “assurances” in exchange.

Ukraine’s VladimirZelensky had previously named territorial issues as being among the most difficult points to resolve. The nation’s military have been losing ground for months to the continued Russian advance. On Monday, the chief of Russia’s General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, reported taking control over the key frontline city of Krasnoarmeysk (Pokrovsk) in the Donetsk People’s Republic.

Kiev’s Western backers in Europe derided Trump’s initial plan as favoring Russia too much and put forward a set of their own conditions for achieving peace, which Moscow dismissed as “unconstructive.”

Germany has been one of Ukraine’s key supporters and arms suppliers in the conflict.Berlin’s position has further hardened under the current governmentled by Chancellor FriedrichMerz, who had previously claimed that all diplomatic options had been “exhausted” and his nation was “already in a conflict” with Russia.

(sane countries in the EU are speaking the truth and disobeying Von de leyen, all the countries are tired and want it over, Ukraine is burning any good will they may have had. And Zelensky has no standing in any matter. ===The EU has been leading the stupid war with Russia and stealing money from European countries to continue this lost war. Just wait to the uncovering of graft, theft and all kinds of fraud that the EU leaders engaged in all this time. Only to distract that the EU countries have been made poor with their leadership.)

Ukraine must accept ‘tactical defeat’ – former foreign minister

Kiev should sign on to an “agreement that no one will like” to avoid years of war, Dmitry Kuleba has said

(this cretin Kuleba advised the public to kill every Russian, and persecute Ethnic Russia, citizens of Ukraine. Now he’s some kind of advisor for peace?)

Kiev must accept an “agreement that no one will like” if it wants to avoid many more years of conflict with Russia and a potential complete collapse, former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba has said.

Speaking at a conference in Kiev on Monday, Kuleba, who held his post between 2020 and 2024, said both Ukraine and Russia have the resources to keep the fight going for years, while predicting that the front line “will move every year” without a political decision.

“We are in a situation where Russia has the ability to destroy us, and we are not strong enough to fully protect ourselves,” he said, adding that only a deal “that no one will like” which locks in a “tactical defeat and strategic victory” could prevent “many more years of war… even worse.” (the diplomats ran out of money to steal from Ukraine, so now they like the idea of peace.)

His comments come amid speculation about the US-drafted peace plan for Ukraine. Its initial version reportedly requires Ukraine to relinquish parts of Donbass still under its control, abandon its NATO membership ambitions, and accept limits on the size of its armed forces.According to the reported plan, Ukraine would receive certain security guarantees from the West.

As part of ongoing diplomatic efforts, a Ukrainian delegation met US officials in Miami on Sunday, with media reportssaying the four-hour talks were “not easy” and that “the search for formulations and solutions continues.”

While both sides described the discussions as productive, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky said territorial issues remain among the most difficult points to resolve. He has repeatedly ruled out any land concessions.

Meanwhile,US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff – who attended the Miami talks and has emerged as a central American interlocutor with Moscow – is expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday.

Putin has suggested that the reported US proposal “could form the basis of a final peace settlement,” while reiterating that any end to the conflict depends on Russia achieving the goals of its special military operation.Moscow has said that a lasting settlement is possible only on condition of Ukraine’s neutrality, demilitarization, denazification, and recognition of the territorial reality on the ground.
