Milgram and others like him did NOT want to give scientific support to the idea that there are plenty of people who do NOT follow orders given by authority figures.

the subjects in the milgram expts were asked to act like ordinary people, not antifa types. The agenda in psychology has historically been to show how people are not capable of making rationally-oriented, morally-grounded decisions, but are inevitably at the mercy of either their genes or their environment.
Milgram manipulated people in an artificial situation, then generalized his results to ordinary life. About 90% sure he deleted or ignored data that would have narrowed the scope of his conclusions, all too common in the social sciences. Milgram wanted to be able to say "People are conformists" than to say "Certain personality types under very specific conditions tend to conform to orders by perceived authority figures that may harm others."
the "learners" in the milgram experiments were definitely in cahoots with the experimenter. Probably actors hired to scream with pain in response to fake shocks.
AS i was posting, was thinking about Covid and conformity. Plenty of people conformed to CDC directives. But plenty did not. Percentages seem similar to milgram results if we think in terms of the general public - would say about 2/3 took the jabs, 1/3 refused? (roughly)
The question is: Who's in each group?
What predicts conformity?
What predicts the refusal to conform?
