Trump may finally bring Japan’s legendary $13k work truck to America after rule change

Trump’s move to deregulate small Japanese-style vehicles has sparked excitement that America could finally get the famous $13,000 Toyota work truck.

After clearing restrictions on kei-size and compact utility vehicles, many believe Toyota could now build the Hilux Champ or similar Japan-inspired trucks inside the U.S. for the first time.

The Hilux Champ, sold in Asia for around $13k, is beloved for its simplicity, reliability, and rugged design that Japan and Thailand perfected for work and farming.

The truck’s “70 percent finished” modular chassis allows buyers to customize it into a flatbed, cargo hauler, food truck, farm truck, or mobile business with over 100 bolt-on points.

In Southeast Asia, this Japanese-engineered mini-workhorse is everywhere because it’s cheap to buy, cheap to fix, and lasts for decades on narrow roads and harsh terrain.

American buyers have been blocked from these trucks for decades due to tariffs, dealer lobbying, and safety rules that protect high-priced U.S. models.

But Trump’s announcement has created hope that Toyota could now legally produce U.S. versions of these Japanese-designed compact trucks without the old restrictions.

This would be a historic moment, finally allowing Americans to enjoy the affordable mini-truck culture Japan and Thailand have had for years.
