Order 66, also known as Clone Protocol 66 or simply "the Order," was a top-secret contingency order issued by Chancellor Palpatine, secretly the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, during the final days of the Clone Wars.
It declared all Jedi as traitors to the Galactic Republic and mandated their immediate execution by the Grand Army of the Republic.
The order was programmed into the DNA of every clone trooper through behavioral modification biochips implanted at birth, making it nearly impossible for them to disobey once activated.
This programming was originally intended by Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas as a safeguard against rogue Jedi, but was secretly retooled by Count Dooku and Sidious to serve as a tool for the Sith's long-term plan to destroy the Jedi Order.
The order was activated after Anakin Skywalker, now Darth Vader, informed Palpatine of the Republic's victory over General Grievous, leading Palpatine to reveal his true identity as a Sith Lord.
