You can do tests for contaminations by putting out pure water in a large bucket and see what happens in about 10 minutes. They only do it for short intervals, so it is not a one time test, but by doing it constantly, you will eventually catch them in the act, when all of a sudden, it looks like dust floating on top of the water.
