>What was Reiner's connection to the CIA?

Rob Reiner was more than a Hollywood liberal. He was a sophisticated political operator.

Reiner could“code switchfrom directing actors into political strategy,” one friend recalled.

Remembering something about another "Actor" "Director" who taught Jim Carrey CIA techniques to sit through the "Make-up" sessions for the GRINCH.

Jim Carrey Went Through CIA Torture Training With The Founder Of SEAL Team Six To Endure Makeup For ‘The Grinch’

Quinn Eaton·CULTURE·December 12, 2025

The Grinch

Christmas is often viewed as the “most wonderful time of the year,” though when Jim Carrey shot How The Grinch Stole Christmas in 2000, it was far from a wonderful time.

The better way to describe the making of the beloved movie would be torturous, at least from the perspective of leading man Jim Carrey. Though the film has since become a Christmas classic, and was highly acclaimed for its advanced set design and unprecedented costume and make up, it was almost a disaster from the start.

Carrey did an absolutely phenomenal job as the not-so-jolly green Christmas hater, but as he told The Graham Norton Show, the process to get into the costume and makeup for the Grinch was almost too much to bear:

“When I did ‘The Grinch,’ the makeup was like being buried alive everyday. The first day (of makeup) was eight and a half hours, and I went back to my trailer and put my leg through the wall, and I told(Director) Ron HowardI couldn’t do the movie.”

Imagine sitting still for eight straight hours and getting caked with prosthetics and makeup. I guess that would make it pretty easy to have the Grinch’s patented disdain for Christmas if you had to do that every time. The comedic actor made it one day as the Grinch and was ready to call it quits, if not for a bright idea from one of the movie’s producers.

Brian Grazer, the producer of the film, came up with a brilliant plan to keep Jim Carrey from leaving the set. What was it? Hire a man that was trained to teach CIA operatives how to endure torture to help Jim Carrey sit through the hours upon hours of makeup.

Carrey recently told Vulture that the guy they brought in was actually the founding member of SEAL Team Six (the famous special ops unit that killed Osama Bin Laden):

“Richard Marcinkowas a gentleman that trained CIA officers and special-ops people how to endure torture. He gave me a litany of things that I could do when I began to spiral. Like punch myself in the leg as hard as I can. Have a friend that I trust and punch him in the arm. Eat everything in sight. Changing patterns in the room. If there’s a TV on when you start to spiral, turn it off and turn the radio on. Later on I found out that the gentleman that trained me to endure the Grinch also founded SEAL Team Six.”

That’s absolutely wild.

Carrey was trained like a prisoner of war in order to make it through the production of…a children’s movie. That was the only way to get through for the talented actor, who ending up enduring the makeup and costume process for months on end in order to shoot the film. The man beneath the Grinch costume found one of the coping mechanisms told to him by the CIA official quite helpful, and used it (along with music from a popular disco group) to endure the film’s production:

“I smoked cigarettes as much as possible. There are pictures of me as the Grinch sitting in a director’s chair with a long cigarette holder. I had to have the holder, because the yak hair would catch on fire if it got too close.

But what really helped me through the makeup process, which they eventually pulled down to about three hours, was the Bee Gees. I listened through the makeup process to the entire Bee Gees catalogue. Their music is so joyful. I’ve never met Barry Gibb, but I want to thank him.”

Shoutout to the Bee Gees for helping Carrey with “staying alive” during the production of How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Sorry, I had to do it…

Rob Reiner's political activism was a big part of his Hollywood star power.

Reiner, who became famous for his portrayal of Archie Bunker's liberal son-in-law Michael "Meathead" Stivic on "All in the Family," would go on to become outspoken on causes near and dear, including social and economic justice, LGBTQ rights and environmental issues.

He co-founded the American Foundation for Equal Rights, the group that initiated the court challenge against California's same-sex marriage ban. He also chaired the campaign that passed First 5 California, an initiative that used a tobacco tax to fund early childhood development programs. He successfully lead efforts to save California's Ahmanson Ranch from commercial development and preserve it as a state park and wildlife refuge.

The celebrated actor and director was a prominent Democratic Party activist, supporting the 2000 campaign of Al Gore, former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean's run for the 2004 Democratic nomination, later backing Democratic candidate John Kerry's campaign in an ad taking aim at incumbent President George W. Bush. He was also a supporter of the 2008 campaign of Hillary Clinton.

Rob Reiner and wife Michele Singer also helped produce the 2024 documentary "God & Country" about the emergence of Christian nationalism and its ties to far-right politics, based on Katherine Stewart's 2020 book "The Power Worshippers."

Democratic politicians shared early condolences following the Reiners' deaths.

In a post on X, Rep. Nancy Pelosi called the news of Reiner and his wife's death "devastating."

>Obama Brennen and Valerie Jarret were Muslims, apparently Rob Reiner CIA

On this date in 1947, actor and filmmaker Robert Norman Reiner was born in Bronx, N.Y., to Estelle (née Lebost) and Carl Reiner. His parents were both actor/entertainers and his father would gain further acclaim as a TV and movie producer and director.

The Jewish family was not religiously observant. Although Reiner was bar mitzvahed, his younger brother was not, nor would Reiner’s two sons be years later. The family moved from New Rochelle, N.Y., to California when he was 13. His best friend at Beverly Hills High School, where he graduated in 1964, was Richard Dreyfuss.

Reiner had minor TV acting roles in shows such as “Batman,” “That Girl,” “The Andy Griffith Show,” “Room 222,” “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.” and “The Beverly Hillbillies.” He and Steve Martin joined “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” in 1968 as writers and were the youngest writers on the show.

In 1971 he took the role he became famous for as Michael Stivic, Archie Bunker’s liberal son-in-law, on Norman Lear‘s “All in the Family,” the most-watched show for the next five seasons. To Carroll O’Connor’s conservative Archie, he was “Meathead” in a 1970s version of the culture wars. (Reiner wore a toupee on the show.)

He later reflected after building a career as a director, producer and screenwriter that “I could win the Nobel Prize and they’d write ‘Meathead wins the Nobel Prize.’ ” He won the 1974 Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor.

He married actress Penny Marshall in 1971, the co-star with Cindy Williams in the “Happy Days” spinoff “Laverne & Shirley” (1976-83). He adopted Marshall’s daughter Tracy before their 1981 divorce. He married photographer Michele Singer in 1989. Their children are Jake (b. 1991), Nick (b. 1993) and Romy (b. 1997). He and Singer had met on the set when he was directing “When Harry Met Sally,” written by Nora Ephron, including the memorable line “I’ll have what she’s having,” spoken by Reiner’s mother in Katz’s deli after Meg Ryan’s character Sally feigns orgasm at the table.

He directed 20 films from 1984-2017, starting with “This Is Spinal Tap” and including “Stand By Me” (his personal favorite), “The Princess Bride,” “Misery,” “A Few Good Men,” “The American President,” “The Bucket List,” “Being Charlie” (drawing from his son’s drug addiction), “LBJ” and “Shock and Awe.”

He also had numerous acting roles in films of that period, including “Throw Momma From the Train,” “Postcards From the Edge,” “Sleepless in Seattle,” “Bullets Over Broadway,” “Bye Bye Love,” “The First Wives Club,” “Primary Colors” and “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

Reiner co-founded Castle Rock Entertainment, a TV and film production company, in 1987. Its more than 125 films include some of those mentioned above as well as “In the Line of Fire,” “City Slickers,” “Miss Congeniality” and “The Shawshank Redemption.” It also produced the very successful “Seinfeld” TV series (1989-98). Castle Rock relaunched its film division in 2021 with a $175 million fund to develop, produce and finance movies.

Appearing on “Real Time with Bill Maher” (Jan. 13, 2012), he agreed with Maher that atheists don’t have equality despite “Nones” making up 17 percent of the population: “You’re right about that, that we don’t have that representation. I include myself in that same 17 percent.” He said later that year that Buddhism was the only religion “that kind of makes sense to me. I don’t believe in organized religion, but I do believe in a lot of the concepts of Buddhism.” (Huffington Post, Aug. 23, 2012)

Reiner has devoted considerable time, energy and money to liberal activism. “The most important thing is that you be a good person and you live by the golden rule of do unto others. If you live by that, that’s all I care about.” (The Jewish Chronicle, Aug. 30, 2012)

Reiner was stabbed to death at age 78 along with his wife Michele, 70, in their home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. Their son Nick, 32, with a long history of drug addiction starting in his teens, was arrested in connection with their deaths. (D. 2025)
