The United East India Company (Dutch: Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie [vərˈeːnɪɣdə oːstˈɪndisə kɔmpɑˈɲi]; abbr. VOC [veː(j)oːˈseː]), commonly known as the Dutch East India Company, was a chartered trading company and one of the first joint-stock companies in the world.[3][4] Established on 20 March 1602[5] by the States General of the Netherlands amalgamating existing companies, it was granted a 21-year monopoly to carry out trade activities in Asia.[6] Shares in the company could be purchased by any citizen of the Dutch Republic and bought and sold in open-air secondary markets, one of which became the Amsterdam Stock Exchange.[7] The company possessed quasi-governmental powers, including the ability to wage war, imprison and execute convicts,[8] negotiate treaties, strike its own coins, and establish colonies.[9] Because it traded across multiple colonies and countries from both the East and the West, the VOC is sometimes considered to have been the world's first multinational corporation.[10][11]

tatistically, the VOC eclipsed all of its rivals in the Asian trade. Between 1602 and 1796, the VOC sent nearly a million Europeans to work in the Asia trade on 4,785 ships, and netted for their efforts more than 2.5 million tons of Asian trade goods and slaves. By contrast, the rest of Europe combined sent 882,412 people from 1500 to 1795. The fleet of the English, later British East India Company, the VOC's nearest competitor, was a distant second to its total traffic, with 2,690 ships and one-fifth the tonnage of goods carried by the VOC. The VOC enjoyed huge profits from its spice monopoly through most of the 17th century.[12]

Having been established in 1602 to profit from the Malukan spice trade, the VOC established a capital in the port city of Jayakarta in 1619 and changed its name to Batavia, now Jakarta. Over the next two centuries, the company acquired additional ports as trading bases and safeguarded their interests by taking over surrounding territory.[13] It remained an important trading concern and paid annual dividends that averaged to about 18% of the capital for almost 200 years.[14] Weighed down by smuggling, corruption and growing administrative costs in the late 18th century, the company went bankrupt and was formally dissolved in 1799. Its possessions and debt were taken over by the government of the Dutch Batavian Republic.

It is great to see Andrej Babis appointed again as Prime Minister of the Czech Republic. Together, we will once again achieve Great Success on Defense, Energy, and Illegal Immigration — Just as we have done during our First Terms in Office. Andrej knows how to get Deals done, and I expected incredible things from him, including on F-35s. Congratulations Andrej!

King James VI (James I of England) didn't rule Jerusalem, but he's linked to the city through early ideas of British Israelism, where some believed Anglo-Saxons were Israelites, and he reportedly saw himself as a

King of Israel, connecting his reign to biblical Jerusalem, though his main focus was peace and statecraft, not Old Testament kingship. He was a powerful monarch ruling Britain (Scotland, England, Ireland) during the early 17th century, commissioning the famous King James Bible and promoting Protestantism, but Jerusalem remained under Ottoman rule then.

Key Connections & Context:

British Israelism: This early theory suggested people of Britain descended from Israelite tribes; James VI/I was associated with these views, seeing his kingdom as a spiritual Israel.

Biblical Identity: While ruling, James sought to unify his kingdoms and project divine authority, aligning himself with biblical kings, even if Jerusalem wasn't his territory.

Actual Rule: James VI ruled Scotland (as James VI) from 1567 and England/Ireland (as James I) from 1603 until his death in 1625, establishing the Stuart dynasty.

Jerusalem's Status: During James's life, Jerusalem was part of the Ottoman Empire, a major Islamic power, not a European Christian kingdom.

In short, James VI/I's connection to Jerusalem is more about religious-political ideology and self-perception as a divinely appointed ruler than actual control or direct involvement in the city's governance

An analysis of 393 Ashkenazic, Iranian, and mountain Jews and over 600 non-Jewish genomes demonstrated that Greeks, Romans, Iranians, and Turks exhibit the highest genetic similarity with AJs. The Geographic Population Structure analysis localized most AJs along major primeval trade routes in northeastern Turkey adjacent to primeval villages with names that may be derived from “Ashkenaz.” Iranian and mountain Jews were localized along trade routes on the Turkey’s eastern border. Loss of maternal haplogroups was evident in non-Yiddish speaking AJs. Our results suggest that AJs originated from a Slavo-Iranian confederation, which the Jews call “Ashkenazic” (i.e., “Scythian”), though these Jews probably spoke Persian and/or Ossete.
