COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — A Whitehall councilman facing serious charges survived a vote to remove him from his post.
The council voted Tuesday night to discuss Gerald Dixon's future on the panel.
"I don’t have feelings right now," Dixon said in response to keeping his seat. "I am silent on the matter, as much as you all hate that, but there’s a court case coming up."
One council member Larry Morrison voted against the resolution to remove Dixon. A unanimous vote was needed to unseat him.
"The most that I have seen and phone calls I have received is that people feel that this is being rushed," Morrison said.
Last week, Dixon was arrested and charged with felony gross sexual imposition and felony prostitution of a minor involving one victim. He was sworn in for his second term hours after being released from jail the day after he was taken into custody.
"I'm very disappointed," Councilmember Lori Elmore said. "It sends a negative message to our city, to the people that we serve, and especially our children."
"How can we have someone like him representing at the highest level of this community?" asked Tina Mathews. "It's appalling for our children."
Mathews does not live in Whitehall but said she attends church in the city.
"This man is disgusting, and by his own admission he likes little boys," she said. "Little boys are everywhere. He shops outside of Whitehall. I'm sure he don't just shop in Whitehall, so by shopping outside of Whitehall, he offends me."
