The Continental Congress and the creation of the Articles of Confederation:

 

The Continental Congress was not only responsible for drafting the Declaration, but they were also laying the groundwork for how the new nation would be governed. In 1776, the Articles of Confederation were being drafted as a loose constitution for the colonies.

The Battle of Trenton (December 26, 1776):
