(NewsNation) — The U.S. military began airstrikes Friday against the Islamic State in Syria, following last weekend’s terror attack that killed two Army soldiers and an American civilian interpreter, the Pentagon confirmed.
Fighter jets, attack helicopters and weapons reportedly struck several targets across central Syria. The New York Times said the strikes were expected to last several hours.
“Earlier today, U.S. forces commenced OPERATION HAWKEYE STRIKE in Syria to eliminate ISIS fighters, infrastructure, and weapons sites in direct response to the attack on U.S. forces that occurred on December 13th in Palmyra, Syria,” Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said in a statement.
“This is not the beginning of a war — it is a declaration of vengeance. The United States of America, under President Trump’s leadership, will never hesitate and never relent to defend our people.”
President Trump vowed retaliation following the Dec. 13 attack against U.S. military personnel. Although it was carried out by a member of Syria’s internal security forces, U.S. officials blamed the Islamic State, which has retained a toehold in the civil war-torn country.
