In November 2025, New York Times columnist David Brooks published an op-ed titled "The Epstein Story? Count Me Out," in which he argued that the public and media were paying too much attention to the Jeffrey Epstein files and not enough to more important national issues.
His column generated significant controversy, which intensified in December 2025 when photos were released by the House Oversight Committee showing Brooks at a 2011 event attended by Epstein.
Brooks's Argument
In his column, Brooks suggested the fascination with the Epstein case was an unproductive, "salacious" obsession that paralleled QAnon conspiracy theories and undermined public trust in institutions. He wrote:
"Why is Epstein the top issue in American life right now?… [in a populist moment] it pays to focus on topics that are salacious, are easy to understand and allow you to offer self-confident opinions with no actual knowledge".
He concluded the piece by asking what future generations would think of this "Epstein moment," suggesting the focus was misplaced.
The Fallout
Just weeks after the op-ed's publication, photos from Epstein's estate were released, including images of Brooks at a dinner. The timing of the photo release led to widespread criticism that Brooks had an ethical obligation to disclose his attendance at an event with Epstein when writing about the subject.
In response, a New York Times spokesperson stated that Brooks "regularly attends events [as a journalist] to speak with noted and important business leaders" and that he "had no contact with [Epstein] before or after this single attendance at a widely-attended dinner". Brooks himself explained on PBS that the photo was taken at a TED conference and he was unaware of who Epstein was at the time.
Critics argued that regardless of his personal involvement, his failure to disclose the association when downplaying the scandal ruined his credibility on the issue.
