Chris Rea dies aged 74 as family of Driving Home For Christmas singer issues statement
The singer and songwriter is survived by his wife and two children.
Driving Home For Christmas singer Chris Rea died aged 74, a spokesperson for his family said. In a brief statement issued on behalf of Mr Rea's family, the spokesperson said the singer died earlier today, December 22, in hospital. In a statement on behalf of his wife and two children, they said: "It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Chris.
"He passed away peacefully in hospital earlier today following a short illness, surrounded by his family." Mr Rea wrote Driving Home for Christmas in 1978, which over the years have grown to become a classic during the festive season. The song came about after he'd been banned from driving, with his wife Joan having to pick him up.
