it's as simple as using DNF to get the source rpm.
then running the rpm and then going to the RPM build directory and copying the gzipped file that shows up there, and running whatever patches.
Then you read the 'read me' file and usually you need to build the build system.
and DNF also lets you download all the dependencies, which are usually just header files.
simple.
you could probably build it all in less than a half hour. just make sure you use all your processors to do the build if you have a multiprocessor machine.
oh, of course, after you copy all the zipped files you need to unzip them.

If you want to get the GIMP source code you need merely download a source rpm and run it and then find the zipped source is your RPM Build directory.
and from there it is very easy to unzip it and to run the utilities to create the build system, and also to build it.
You'll also need to get all the dependancies which is also VERY EASY with dnf.
and now adays you could probably have an AI walk you through the whole process.
