Massive protest in Richmond Hill draws tens of thousands against Iranian regime

https://www.rebelnews.com/massive_protest_in_richmond_hill_draws_tens_of_thousands_against_iranian_regime

Saturday’s enormous demonstration in Richmond Hill — just north of Toronto — comes after reports of the Iranian regime murdering thousands of protesters in an effort to cling to power.

Tens of thousands of protesters gathered at the intersection of Yonge Street and Highway 16 in Richmond Hill on Saturday, to show their support for the pro-freedom demonstrators in Iran and to condemn the Islamic regime.

Footage captured by Rebel News journalist Scarlett Grace shows the full scale of the demonstration, with some reports indicating over 100,000 people were at the event to condemn Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and call for regime change.

The demonstration was led by members of Canada's Iranian diaspora, with thousands of protesters waving the Lion and Sun flag — Iran's pre-1979 monarchy flag — and Canadian flags in support of the uprising in Iran. Continue…

The U.S. House Select Committee on China is warning Canada that it should reconsider opening its auto industry to Beijing and risking thousands of jobs, ahead of the upcoming renewal negotiations for the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

By opening its market to Chinese electric vehicles (EVs), Canada risks distorting its auto industry by giving “Beijing a foothold in the North American auto market, threatening thousands of jobs and undermining a century of integrated automotive leadership,” the committee said in a Jan. 16 post on X.

“China’s state-subsidized overcapacity has already distorted Europe’s auto industry, and North America will be next if this precedent stands,” the committee said.

“At a critical moment for USMCA renewal negotiations, Canada should reconsider and work with the United States and Mexico to strengthen, not weaken, North American industry.” Continue…

A former Ontario teacher says she has settled a defamation lawsuit against her previous school board after the board chair called her “transphobic” when she tried to raise concerns about the content of some books in school libraries.

The Ontario Court of Appeal had in November 2024 permitted Carolyn Burjoski’s defamation lawsuit against the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) and former school board chairman Scott Piatkowski to proceed, after the school board appealed an earlier court decision allowing the case to go ahead.

Burjoski launched the lawsuit over an accusation by Piatkowski that her remarks during a presentation at a January 2022 meeting were “transphobic.”

Piatkowski also cut Burjoski’s presentation time short, saying her remarks were in violation of the Human Rights Code. Continue…

Canada and Qatar have secured new partnerships in trade, commerce, and defence cooperation, with Prime Minister Mark Carney saying the Middle Eastern country has committed to making “significant strategic investments” in Canada’s nation-building projects.

Carney made the announcement in Doha on Jan. 18, concluding his one-day visit to Qatar’s capital, where he met with Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of Qatar, to discuss expanding Canada’s economic opportunities as part of his goal of doubling non-U.S. exports over the next decade.

Carney’s trip to Qatar marks the first visit by a sitting Canadian prime minister to the state. Following his visit, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) issued a news release saying the two countries have committed to “accelerated two-way investment and collaboration” in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), aerospace, defence technologies, agriculture, and agri-food.

“This capital will help the projects get built faster and supercharge our energy industries, while helping to create thousands of high-paying careers for Canadians,” Carney told reporters at the Doha press conference. The PMO added that those investments will enhance the development of the “clean energy, health, AI, and defence” sectors. Continue…

Ottawa Announces Next Steps in Gun Buyback Program

https://www.theepochtimes.com/world/ottawa-announces-next-steps-in-gun-buyback-program-5972570?ea_src=ca-frontpage&ea_med=medium-1

Ottawa says it’s giving owners of newly banned firearms until the end of March to declare an interest in receiving compensation in return for handing over or permanently deactivating their guns.

The federal government has banned about 2,500 types of assault-style firearms since 2020, saying the guns were made for warfare, not sport shooting or hunting.

The government says the declaration period for gun owners will begin on Jan. 19 and run until March 31. Firearms owners interested in participating in the gun buyback program can file a declaration online or by paper.

After the March 31 cutoff date, firearms owners cannot apply to receive compensation for turning over their banned guns. Continue…
