Bayer said in lawsuits that Pfizer, its partner BioNTech, and Moderna wrongly used technology Monsanto developed and used to make plants resistant to insects.

Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna included the technology in their shots to enhance the stability of messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) “and thus the vaccines’ ability to confer immunity to the virus,” lawyers for Bayer and Monsanto said in the suits, which were filed on Jan. 6 with the U.S. court in Delaware.

Bayer was not involved in COVID-19 vaccine manufacturing or production.

A locally owned grocery store in Nanaimo has taken the unusual step of locking up its meat section amid what owners describe as rampant theft that’s cutting into already thin margins.

Superette Foods, run by Sarita Patel and her husband since late 2024, now keeps high-end meat products under lock and key, according to a post by the owners on the company's Facebook page.

Customers must ring a bell and request assistance to purchase items — a security measure the owners say has become necessary after repeated losses.

“They are stealing sometimes $70 of meat, sometimes $100 of meat,” Patel told Global News. She warned that persistent theft isn’t just frustrating — “We will not survive” if losses continue.

Employees say the locked cooler is intended to help keep prices down and the department open for legitimate shoppers. The store reported incidents to Nanaimo RCMP, but thefts have continued.

Local pro-life activist Lane Walker was arrested for defending life outside a Vancouver abortion clinic, in the latest attack against the pro-life movement.

On January 6, police arrested and charged Walker, a local pro-lifer, at Everywoman’s Health Center in Vancouver, British Columbia, for engaging in conversation with a passerby about the legislation which prohibits pro-life activism outside abortion facilities.

“When we are told that we need to love not just in words, but in deeds, I think that challenge around how our words and how our actions line up is really important,” Walker told LifeSiteNews in a recent interview.

“And some of the ways it gets talked about, if you really believe that this is the killing of an unborn child, then maybe we should be acting like it,” he continued.

January 6 marked the fourth time Walker has defended life outside the center in recent months.

A 26-year-old Ontario man has been euthanized by medical assistance in dying (MAiD) despite his doctor describing him as "young and healthy."

Kiano Vafaeian died from MAiD on December 30, something his mother, Margaret Marsilla, announced in a Facebook post on Tuesday, stating the doctor who approved his euthanasia, found a "loophole" to kill her son.

Vafaeian received MAiD in Vancouver by a now household name in MAiD — Dr. Ellen Wiebe, referred to as "DR DEATH #2."

Wiebe, a member of the Clinician's Advisory Council (CAC) for Dying with Dignity Canada (DWDC), a Canadian MAiD lobbying group, and a University of British Columbia (UBC) professor, has a long history with MAiD, as she is one of the leading clinicians contributing to its administration.

Reported in 2023 by Right to Life UK, Wiebe had administered MAiD to over 400 patients, and in a video obtained by The New Atlantis, Wiebe told listeners at a conference MAiD was "the most rewarding work we’ve ever done.” Continue…

The government of Canada has slated 2026 as a census year and is planning to recruit more than 30,000 personnel to conduct the population count that occurs twice each decade.

The census is a national tally by Statistics Canada of the country’s population and housing. It is carried out every five years to furnish essential demographic, social, and economic data for governmental and community planning.

Statistics Canada will also carry out a census of agriculture to collect information about every farm operation in Canada.

“These data inform decisions about child care and education services, health care, public transportation, housing, community planning, and a wide range of programs that support Canadians,” StatCan said in a Jan. 6 press release. Census data is also used to set electoral riding boundaries.

The government plans to hire approximately 32,000 people for census jobs across Canada.

The Conservatives are calling on the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to pause the implementation of new livestock tracking regulations, citing concerns about regulatory burden on farmers.

The CFIA first published proposed amendments to Canada’s “Health of Animals Regulations” in 2023, to expand livestock tracking requirements and introduce mandatory movement reporting for several additional species of livestock.

The proposed amendments would apply new requirements to currently regulated species like bison, cattle, and sheep, as well as proposed species, including goats and cervids, which would be regulated under the new changes.

The Provincial Court of B.C. has vacated two fines issued against a pastor who took part in worship services in contravention of COVID-19 lockdown rules.

Justice Andrea Ormiston amended the court’s record on Jan. 8 after the Crown acknowledged the two penalties imposed on pastor John Koopman of the Free Reformed Church in Chilliwack, B.C., had already been voided by the Insurance Corporation of B.C., which oversees provincial offence fines.

Koopman was previously found guilty of participating in in-person worship services in 2020 and 2021, violating a ban established by B.C. Provincial Health Officer Bonnie Henry. Koopman received two tickets for these violations, totalling $460.

“The Crown’s acknowledgement of their error is welcomed,” Koopman said in a Jan. 8 release from the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF), which represented Koopman in the case. “Dr. Henry and the government should carefully evaluate their entire approach, for this is only one of many errors which were made, the greatest of which is the restriction of the public worship of our God.” Continue…
