Zijin Gold International is a subsidiary of Zijin Mining Group, which is listed on the U.S. government’s Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act Entity List. The act restricts the import of goods in the United States from companies considered to be connected to the use of forced labour of China’s ethnic Uyghur minority in the Xinjiang region.

Zijin has offered $44 per share for the Toronto-based gold mining company, which owns and operates three mines in Africa and whose stock last closed at $41.75 on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Jan. 23 and rose past $43 on the morning of Jan. 26.

Removing the bureaucratic burden on Canada’s doctors could free up the equivalent of more than 9,000 full-time physicians to see patients, a new report suggests.

Each hour spent on “unnecessary” paperwork results in extended wait times and a reduction in available appointments for patients, according to a report from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) and the Canadian Medical Association (CMA).

Removing this bureaucratic burden could potentially release the equivalent of 9,093 full-time physicians to attend to patients, researchers said.

Doctors dedicate more than one full day every week to administrative duties that don’t require their medical expertise, the report found. For individual doctors, this totals nearly 200 hours annually, which is equivalent to more than an entire month of work.

This results in a total loss of 19.8 million hours annually for Canadian physicians as a consequence of paperwork, the report estimates. Continue…

A federal employee placed on leave without pay for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine on religious grounds has been awarded back pay and $5,000 in damages by a labour tribunal.

Mathieu Lemay, a federal employee for 15 years, was working at the department of public safety and emergency preparedness when he was put on leave without pay after his application for vaccine exemption was rejected by his employer, according to a decision by a panel of the Federal Public Sector Labour Relations and Employment Board.

“I have concluded that the grievor is entitled to damages of $5,000 under s. 53(2)(e) of the [Canadian Human Rights Act],” adjudicator Christopher Rootham wrote in the decision, which was first reported by Blacklock’s Reporter.

Rootham wrote that Lemay was entitled to the damages due to the “pain and suffering” he experienced over the “loss of dignity and self-worth that he incurred by being placed on leave without pay.”

Rootham also said the employer was required to provide backpay for the time Lemay was on leave, including the benefits he would have received if he had remained on the job.
