The Colombian side had a similarly positive assessment, with the Foreign Ministry calling it a "good meeting".

As EuroNews reports, Orbán rejected the possibility of Hungary leaving the EU, saying the country lacked the size to make such a decision sensible. However, he stressed Hungary's future lay within the bloc and NATO but with "a sovereign foreign policy and economic policy". He said: "EU membership is an important opportunity, but if we were to get stuck in this single bloc, we would drink the juice. It makes sense to have the best possible relations with all blocs, including America, Russia, China, the Arab world and the Turkish world."

Orbán has clashed repeatedly with Brussels over rule of law concerns, blocked EU support to Ukraine and maintained ties with Moscow despite all his European peers blacklisting Putin. A former employee of Toronto-Dominion (TD) Bank based in New York has pleaded guilty to orchestrating the transfer of nearly $100 million dollars for a money-laundering syndicate through the bank’s accounts.

The charge represents the most recent development in an investigation by U.S. authorities into a scheme involving hundreds of millions of dollars in drug-related funds.

Former Midtown Manhattan branch assistant manager Wilfredo Aquino, 47, pleaded guilty this week to participation in the money laundering operation, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) said in a Jan. 6 press release.

Aquino assisted the head of the network by laundering most of its funds from 2019 until February 2021 at the TD branch where he was employed, according to court filings.

Aquino processed roughly 1,680 official bank cheques for the network run by Da Ying Sze, also known as David. Nearly all of the cheques exceeded US$10,000 and came to more than US$92 million, the court heard. The size of the cheques meant the bank was required to file a currency transaction report (CTR), an anti-money laundering tool used by U.S. financial institutions to detect illicit financial activities like money laundering.

Aquino was aware that Sze was making these cash deposits, yet he never referred to Sze as the “conductor” on the CTR, according to the DOJ release. Aquino also knew that TD Bank had closed other accounts associated with Sze due to suspicious activities, and one colleague had even cautioned Aquino that Sze’s actions resembled money laundering. The Liberal government says it collected 25 prohibited firearms in its gun buyback pilot program, which took place over six weeks in Nova Scotia last fall, falling short of its 200 firearms objective.

Ottawa launched an initial pilot program for its federal gun buyback plan in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, in September 2025. The program aimed to “test the program’s processes and systems” before being launched nationwide.

The government had intended to collect 200 guns from licensed owners in Cape Breton, where the local police force had agreed to participate in the program.

Individual licence holders in Cape Breton were notified about how to take part in the pilot program, and various stages of the program were “thoroughly” tested during the pilot, Public Safety Canada said in a report released Jan. 7. The pilot tested the online processes for creating accounts and booking collection appointments, in addition to the processes for validating and destroying firearms, and issuing compensation payments to eligible participants.

Doug Ford said Monday that Ontarians should “stock up” on Crown Royal, as it will be pulled from the shelves of LCBO stores next month. The decision was made in response to British liquor company Diageo announcing that it would be shuttering one of its factories in Ontario and moving it to the United States.

But Canadian researcher and professor Sylvain Charlebois told National Post that Ford’s move could adversely impact jobs in the rest of the country.

Here’s why the repercussions of the Crown Royal boycott may be more complicated than what Ford is saying.

There are many Canadians who will continue to work on manufacturing Crown Royal whisky outside of Ontario. There are 1.5 million barrels in the company’s distillery in Gimli, Manitoba, at the edge of Lake Winnipeg. Meanwhile, in Quebec, the Valleyfield Distillery produces 28 million litres of alcohol, which includes Crown Royal, according to whiskey.com.

“Canadian farmers out of Manitoba support the production at the Gimli plant. And the Crown Royal that is being consumed in Canada is bottled out of Valleyfield, Quebec,” Charlebois said. He is currently a visiting scholar in food policy and distribution at McGill University.

“When you lose a customer like the LCBO, it will likely impact jobs in both Manitoba and Quebec. The LCBO is probably the largest client for the Valleyfield plant in Quebec,” he said. Continue…

Amid ongoing tensions between Canada and the United States over trade, talk of annexation, and American military action both real (Venezuela) and potential (Greenland), one realm remains free of conflict — outer space.

In a video posted to X last week, NASA press secretary Bethany Stevens announced that Artemis 2, the next human-crewed flight to the moon, is now less than two weeks away from rollout.

That would mean transporting the giant Space Launch System (SLS) rocket from NASA’s Vehicle Assembly Building to the launch pad at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The next step would be to check out the SLS and load it with propellants for a launch that could happen as soon as Feb. 6, though the window extends through April.

The mission is to send four astronauts to the moon and back. They won’t land on it but they will swing around in what’s called a free-return trajectory before heading back to Earth. The flight will last about a week.

“As always our top priority is the safety of our astronauts — Reid, Victor, Christina and Jeremy — as they contribute to our next giant leap,” Stevens said.

That would be mission commander Reid Wiseman, pilot Victor Glover, mission specialist Christina Koch and mission specialist Jeremy Hansen. The crew includes the first Black astronaut to head to the moon, the first woman, and the first non-American — Canada’s Hansen. Continue…
