Meta announced on Monday that it was naming Dina Powell McCormick as its president and vice chairman of the board.
Powell McCormick served as deputy national security advisor to President Donald Trump during his first term. She is also a veteran of the George W. Bush administration, where she worked under Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, CNBC reported.
She is married to Republican Sen. Dave McCormick of Pennsylvania.

The Minnesota ICE Watch group that Renee Good was part of has been exposed for sharing a “de-arrest primer” manual that teaches its members and supporters how to physically interfere with law enforcement during arrests.
The guide, posted on their Instagram account in June, states that every de-arrest is a “micro-intifada,” and provides step-by-step advice on confronting and assaulting officers.
Minnesota ICE Watch, described as a “loose collective of agitators,” focuses on documenting and resisting federal immigration enforcement, including ICE agents. The group operates under the banner of an “autonomous collective documenting & resisting against ICE, police, & all colonial militarized regimes,” as stated on their Instagram profile.
Good, a 37-year-old member of the group, was fatally shot by an ICE agent on January 7, while attempting to mow him down with her vehicle.
According to a report from the New York Post, neighbors say Good attended regular meetings and received “thorough training” from ICE Watch.

US toy maker Mattel has released the first autistic Barbie doll, expanding its flagship line as part of what the company says is a broader effort to showcase diversity and inclusion.
The doll was developed with guidance from the autistic community over more than 18 months, Mattel said. It is the newest addition to the ‘Barbie Fashionistas’ line, which already includes dolls representing people with type 1 diabetes, Down syndrome, and blindness, and is designed so that more children “see themselves in Barbie.”
According to Mattel, the doll’s eyes gaze slightly to one side, reflecting how some autistic people “avoid direct eye contact.” She has bendable elbows and wrists to allow repetitive physical movements such as stimming and hand-flapping, and comes with accessories including a fidget spinner, noise canceling headphones, and a tablet with symbol based communication apps. The company said the doll also wears a loose fitting dress intended to reflect “sensory sensitive” clothing preferences.

Manitobans can now carry their health card on a phone as the province launches a digital option aimed at making health care faster, safer, and more convenient.
Premier Wab Kinew, Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care Minister Uzoma Asagwara, and Innovation Minister Mike Moroz announced the rollout Monday.
“Digital health cards put Manitobans in control of their own information, make it easier to access care, and support a safer, more responsive health system,” Kinew said, noting the province has moved from paper cards to plastic and now to digital.
The digital card works with MediNav, Manitoba’s online appointment system, allowing residents to book clinic visits and carry their health information all from a mobile device.
Asagwara said the government has eliminated previous delays in health card processing.

One of the three men accused of the 2022 murder of an elderly Abbotsford couple had arrived on an international student visa only three weeks before he and two other accomplices allegedly killed Arnold, 77, and Joanne, 76, De Jong, said the Crown prosecutor during the opening stages of their trial this Monday
The De Jongs were last seen by family the night before their alleged murder, the evening of May 8th, 2022. After Arnold's sister tried to contact them the next day and was unable to, the couple's son-in-law went to their house and discovered, upon entering, the body of Joanne.
When police officers arrived, the couple was swiftly identified as the victims of a homicide.
Joanne's cause of death was deemed to be blunt and sharp force trauma, with her being found in her bed in a pool of blood, hands and feet tied with rope.
Arnold was found in a separate room, also bound by the hands and feet on a bed, but with his face, including his mouth and nose, tightly covered with duct tape. His death was deemed to be caused by asphyxiation.
Co-Crown counsel Dorothy Tsui said that the victims apparently knew the three men, as they had hired a cleaning company owned by Abhijeet Singh, one of the accused, to clean their roof and eavestroughs in 2021 and 2022. Continue…

Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to meet with a First Nations advocacy group Jan. 13 to discuss a potential oil pipeline from Alberta to the B.C. coast.
Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hodgson and Housing Minister Gregor Robertson will accompany Carney to Prince Rupert, B.C., for the meeting with the Coastal First Nations-Great Bear Initiative, a non-profit advocacy group that includes a number of members of B.C. coastal First Nations.
The meeting will be Hodgson and Carney’s first with the advocacy group, which opposes any lifting of the oil tanker ban on B.C.’s north coast and the construction of any oil pipeline to northern B.C. tidewater.
Ottawa signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Alberta on Nov. 27 proposing to build one or more pipelines from Alberta to B.C.’s north coast if a private proponent comes forward. The MOU also liftss various Trudeau-era energy regulations, along with “adjustments” to the oil tanker ban as necessary for a future pipeline.
In return, Alberta has pledged to increase its industrial carbon tax, reduce methane emissions, and put in place an extensive carbon capture system alongside the new pipeline.
For now, Alberta is acting as chief proponent in developing the pipeline proposal to carry 1 million barrels per day of crude oil to B.C.’s north coast for export to Asia. Continue…

A bid by the Canadian arm of PetroChina Ltd. to take full ownership of Alberta’s Grand Rapids Pipeline is facing various legal and regulatory obstacles.
The Chinese-owned corporation currently owns about half of the 460-kilometre pipeline that transports oil from the oil sands in and around Fort McMurray, Alta., to the Edmonton area, and is seeking to buy the remaining stake from Calgary-based South Bow Corporation.
PetroChina attempted to buy out South Bow’s share in November 2025 via a purchase option in their shared agreement that came with a 30-day deadline. This did not allow time for legally required government approvals under the Competition Act and Investment Canada Act to go through.
On Nov. 24, South Bow declined to extend the 30-day time period or wait further for the regulatory approvals to go through, meaning the deal could not be finalized. PetroChina triggered a dispute resolution process since it could not get the required approvals by Dec. 24, 2025, and also sought an injunction from the court that would stop the option from expiring as arbitration continued.
In a decision released Jan. 7 by Justice Douglas Mah of the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta, he wrote that both approval requirements from the government would likely take several months to obtain, and refused to grant an injunction, concluding that any alleged harm experienced by PetroChina could be addressed via arbitration.
Mah said that PetroChina had not demonstrated why it would suffer irreparable harm if the option expired and said the option could later be restored by the arbitration panel if it agrees with PetroChina. Continue…

One of the men wanted in connection with a $20 million gold heist at Toronto’s Pearson airport in 2023 has been taken into custody by Peel Regional Police.
Officers arrested Arsalan Chaudhary, 43, at Toronto Pearson International Airport after he flew to Toronto from Dubai on Jan. 12, nearly two years after a Canada-wide warrant was issued for his arrest.
Chaudhary has been charged with theft over $5,000, two counts of possession of property obtained by crime, and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, and was held for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton, police said in a Jan. 12 press release.
Peel Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah said the arrest demonstrates how local officers collaborating with international law enforcement can thwart complex criminal operations.
“This investigation demonstrates the dedication and expertise of Peel Regional Police in tackling complex, high-stakes crime,” Duraiappah said in the press release. “Let it be known: no matter where you try to run or hide, we will find you.”
