It’s a bit frustrating to live in a city that it’s so beautiful it hurts, but is only reported around the world when some awful criminal event takes place, or if one of our ‘leaders’ is caught during a corruption sting… you know, third world problems.
The nice exception are the mega events that take place in this city that is designed for tourism: Rock in Rio, the Carnival, and of course, the largest New Year’s Eve in the planet.

RSF commander’s adviser, aides 'killed' in Sudan drone attack

Hamid Ali Abubakar, security adviser to Rapid Support Forces commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, was killed along with several aides in a drone attack carried out by the Sudanese army near the city of Zalingei, the capital of Central Darfur state, RSF security adviser Al Basha Tabiq said.
Tabiq announced the death in a post on social media. Local sources said a drone struck a meeting of RSF forces in the village of Al Firdous in the Waranga area near Zalingei in western Sudan.
Abubakar’s role
The sources added that Abubakar served as an adviser to Dagalo and a field commander leading the Al Saif Al Battar unit, which includes hundreds of RSF fighters.
The sources added that he also played a central role in mobilising tribes and traditional leaders in support of the RSF.
The Sudanese army has yet to comment on the incident.
The three Kordofan states – North, West, and South – have seen weeks of fierce fighting between the army and the RSF, prompting tens of thousands of people to flee.
Of Sudan’s 18 states, the RSF controls all five states of the Darfur region in the west, except for some northern parts of North Darfur that remain under army control.
The army, meanwhile, holds most areas of the remaining 13 states in the south, north, east, and centre, including the capital, Khartoum.
Sudan’s humanitarian crisis has worsened since the war between the army and the RSF erupted in April 2023 over a dispute on unifying the military establishment, killing tens of thousands and displacing millions.

Indian security forces have neutralized bombs and recovered arms and ammunition thought to have been left by militant groups in the violence-hit northeastern state of Manipur, according to media reports.
Security forces have found 27 bombs and neutralized them in Manipur’s Imphal East district, PTI news agency has reported, quoting a senior official.
The forces also recovered arms and ammunition from the district, according to the report. Militant groups operating in the region commonly loot ordnance used by the Indian army.
More than 200 people have been killed and thousands left homeless in ethnic strife between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo militant groups in Manipur since May 2023.
New Delhi suspended local government in Manipur after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, a member of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), resigned in February 2025.
The state assembly, which is up for re-election in 2027, has been suspended.
Violence between the two communities – the majority Meitei, who inhabit the interior plains, and the minority Kukis, who live in the surrounding hills – has escalated since May 2023. Since the onset of this conflict, hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced.
In November 2024, New Delhi reimposed a special security act in several regions of the state. The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) gives army and paramilitary forces special powers to search, arrest, and open fire if deemed necessary for maintaining public order.

A Battlefield Without a Front Line
Shortly before Christmas, drones slipped over a military compound in northeastern Colombia and detonated above soldiers who believed they were briefly safe. Seven soldiers died where they were resting.
Reporting by The Wall Street Journal correspondent Juan Forero linked the strike to the National Liberation Army, or the ELN.
The fear has moved fast from the periphery to the cities. The Journal described officials in Cali scrambling to keep gangs from dropping explosives onto police stations, and reported that an assault in eastern Colombia killed 80 people and uprooted tens of thousands earlier this year.
Since April 2024, the military says it has counted about 400 drone attacks; President Gustavo Petro has said those strikes killed 58 soldiers and police officers and wounded nearly 300.
Senior army officer Maj. Gen. Juan Carlos Correa, cited by the Journal, said the drones arrived as a surprise capability and that the countermeasures so far have not been enough.
Outside Colombia, drone warfare is often told through Ukraine and Russia, but here it is stitched into the cocaine economy.
Military officials told the Journal most attack drones are commercial models—often made in China—bought online for a few hundred dollars and modified to carry homemade explosives.
Cheap Flight, Costly Shield
Engineer Cesar Jaramillo of the state-run Colombian Aeronautical Industry told the Journal how quickly armed groups can turn off-the-shelf drones into weapons.
The same adaptation is spreading across Latin America. In western Mexico, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel drops C-4 to drive villagers out and seize territory.
In Rio de Janeiro in October, the Red Command gang used drones to bomb police from above. In Ecuador, authorities say prison-based kingpins use drones to smuggle in phones and drugs, keeping command alive behind bars.

Researcher Henry Ziemer of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington told the Journal the region’s drone challenge can be harder than on conventional battlefields because there is no frontline to fortify.
Organized-crime groups are embedded in society, so governments must defend bases, highways, ports, and neighborhoods at once.
The drone war is also political. Trump calls Colombia’s resurgent militias narco-terrorists for shipping drugs to the U.S. and has attacked Petro for letting the trade expand, even as his administration carried out airstrikes against alleged drug boats in the Caribbean and the Pacific to pressure Nicolás Maduro’s regime in Venezuela, the Journal reported.
Petro says his government is fighting the gangs while acknowledging that United Nations monitoring shows more coca than ever.
Military data cited by the Journal show the biggest armed groups have roughly doubled to 25,000 members in three years after cease-fires gave them room to recruit and invest.
The ELN is now estimated at 6,700 members, and the drone tempo has climbed from roughly a dozen strikes a month in 2024 to nearly double that pace this year.
Grief Under The Propellers In Cali
Luz Rivas told the Journal her nephew, Sgt. Wilmar Rivas, feared being killed by an explosive dropped from a drone he could not even see.
He was killed in August at a river checkpoint along a major cocaine corridor when a drone targeted his unit. Beforehand, he texted home, “Pray for me, hopefully they’ll get us out of here soon.”
Colombia is trying to buy time. At Aeronautical Industry, engineers are designing rugged unmanned vehicles for surveillance and real-time intelligence, while contractors develop jamming systems for a new antidrone battalion.
Engineers told the Journal there is no single counterdrone system that works against every attack, and a single unit can cost more than $100,000.
Electronics engineer Andres Gomez said options like nets or lasers can exist on paper but are difficult to deploy in jungles and mountains where troops often operate.
Evan Ellis of the U.S. Army War College told the Journal that drones, like landmines before them, have forced everyone to assume they are exposed.
In Cali, Mayor Alejandro Eder has weighed the threat since an antidrone system was temporarily installed for a United Nations-led summit.
The city lies near mountains where drug crops grow and close to trafficking corridors, and gangs fight for control in its outskirts and poorest barrios.
Eder said gangs have twice dropped explosives from drones that failed to detonate, and he has consulted antidrug officials from the U.S. embassy about jamming options.
He warned it is only a matter of time before a major city suffers a successful strike, and added, “And that city will be Cali.” The sky is contested.

Helicopter, drone and armed police deployed as seven arrests made in Surrey

Armed police, a helicopter and drones were all deployed in a Surrey Police operation that saw seven people arrested in Caterham on Thursday night (January 1)
The resources were used to locate and identify suspects after the force was called to Tupwood Scrubbs Road in Caterham at around 10.20pm to reports of an attempted theft of a car.
It was reported to police that the suspects were carrying weapons.
Two vehicles believed to be connected to the offence were stopped at Cobham Services on the A3 around 4.50am on Friday (January 1).
A spokesperson for Surrey Police said: "Police were called to Tupwood Scrubbs Road around 10.20pm following reports of an attempted theft of a car.
"Multiple officers, including the police helicopter and police drone, were involved in the investigation to identify and locate the suspects and their vehicle, including armed officers as the suspects were alleged to have been carrying weapons."
Seven people – three men in their 30s, two men in their 20s, and two teenage boys, were arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm or imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and attempted robbery.
They are currently in police custody and enquiries are ongoing.

A former US Air Force nuclear specialist is claiming that President Trump could release photos of a recovered craft this year, while a British documentary filmmaker says the Vatican is quietly preparing for first contact with extraterrestrial life.
Gene Sticco, a retired Air Force Staff Sergeant who spent over 30 years working in military intelligence and nuclear weapons security, recently spoke with the Daily Star about what he expects from the current administration regarding UFO disclosure.
According to Sticco, the smoking gun is out there, but whether or not the government wheels it out for public display remains another question entirely.

According to Sticco, the government’s controlled disclosure process has reached its capacity and is no longer manageable. He describes the current situation as transition by design, with a new focus on better structuring institutions and international cooperation.
